Daily Tape Analysis — 2026-10-15

The Story

The market bounced on 10-15: SPY +0.37%, IWM +1.43%, with financials and defensives leading (BLK +4.28%, UNH +2.77%, V +2.07%, WFC +2.32%) while semis lagged (NVDA -1.88%, AMD -1.54%, INTC -2.03%). Yesterday's bearish conviction bets mostly failed — ORCL +2.99%, WMT +1.41%, IWM +1.43%, MSFT +1.00% all moved against the puts; only TSLA's bearish bet paid off (-1.38%). The big shift today is defensive put flow into index ETFs despite the bounce: QQQ $241.1M unusual puts and SPY $93.1M, with PCR_v at 2.13 on SPY. Fresh bearish bets also landed on COST ($4.3M, score 70) and WMT ($2.1M, score 64) at or near 62-day highs.

Bearish Bets to Watch

COST (score 70) — top conviction bearish. $4.3M unusual puts across 20 contracts, led by the 985 10/23 put at 469x V/OI ($0.63M) and 990 10/23 at 234.5x ($0.77M); spot is $977.82 after yesterday's +2.92% spike to $982.38. No TRO confirmation, but unusual flow jumped from $1.9M/412x yesterday to $4.3M/469x today.

WMT (score 64) — fresh fade at the 62-day high. $2.1M puts, with the 116 10/23 put at 2238x V/OI ($0.41M) and 120 10/23 at 538x ($0.78M); spot $117.84, +1.41% today and +6.52% over 62 days. No TRO confirmation; yesterday's WMT bearish bet was wrong (+1.41%).

IWM (score 61, TRO ✅) — persistent small-cap hedge. $38.6M puts led by 260 11/20 ($14.15M, 5.5% OTM), 262 11/20 ($9.35M), and 258 11/20 at 57.5x ($6.44M); spot $275.08. TRO confirms, but the position is underwater short-term — IWM bounced +1.43% today and yesterday's $102.8M bearish bet was wrong.

V (score 59) — top-strike fade after a +2.07% day. $1.4M puts concentrated at 400 10/23 (39.5x, $0.38M) and 402 10/23 (384x, $0.25M); spot $399.51, +11.92% over 62 days. No TRO confirmation.

QQQ/SPY (scores 44/46) — index-level protection. QQQ $241.1M puts (largest single-day put notional in the book) with the 715 10/30 put at $48.7M and 780 10/23 at $13.7M; SPY $93.1M with the 760 10/30 put at $29.17M. This is the dominant shift: heavy hedging into a bounce.

Bullish Bets to Watch

NVDA (via top call print) — single largest print of the day: $249.8M on the 190 12/18 call at 6.5x V/OI (deep ITM, -12.6% OTM). Spot fell -1.88% to $217.33 today, so this reads as a longer-dated recovery bet rather than an overnight trade. Separate short-dated calls at 220 10/23 (9.7x) and 202 10/23 (293x) also printed.

AMZN (score 54, TRO ✅) — TRO-confirmed momentum long. $16.8M calls, anchored by the 265 10/30 call at $11.14M (4% OTM); spot $254.76, +0.23% today. TRO confirms the setup after yesterday's $3.1M to today's $16.8M jump.

UNH (score 54) — breakout continuation. $6.0M calls stacked across the 410 strike (10/23, 10/30, 11/06, 11/13); spot $406.66 after +2.77% today and +4.80% yesterday. No TRO confirmation, but the stock is two days into a break above the 395 level.

GOOGL (score 51) — near-the-money expiry plays. $10.8M calls led by 350 10/23 ($3.92M) and 352 10/23 (6.2x); spot $349.27. No TRO confirmation.

INTC (score 45) — aggressive short-dated bounce bets. $51.0M calls total, with 93 10/23 at 253.6x V/OI ($9.9M) and 95 10/23 at 42.5x ($8.6M); spot $95.76 after -2.03% today. The calls are just below/at spot with 2 days to expiry — a sharp-reversal wager against today's decline.

The Oracle Read

The tape is split: index ETF traders are buying downside protection (QQQ $241.1M, SPY $93.1M puts) while single-stock flow leans long where TRO confirms (AMZN, SPY calls) and short at stretched highs (COST, WMT). Strongest setups are COST and WMT — high V/OI put clusters at 62-day highs with no TRO yet, meaning the fade is fresh and unvalidated. NVDA's $249.8M December call is the one large bet that needs a recovery in semis to work.

Names to Watch at the Open

  • COST — bearish; watch 985/990 vs spot $977.82; 469x V/OI put cluster, score 70.
  • WMT — bearish; watch 116/120 vs spot $117.84; 2238x V/OI on the 116 put.
  • V — bearish; watch 400/402 vs spot $399.51; 384x V/OI, +2.07% day into the top.
  • QQQ — bearish; watch 715 10/30 put ($48.7M) vs spot $727.20; largest put notional in the book.
  • NVDA — bullish; watch 190 Dec call ($249.8M) vs spot $217.33; needs semis to stop sliding.
  • INTC — bullish; watch 93/95 calls vs spot $95.76; 253x V/OI, 2 days to expiry.

Total unusual put notional: $157.4M across 10 sectors. Sectors with 🔴 Defensive signal have BOTH high PCR (>1.2) AND >$2M of unusual put buying — institutions are actively hedging there. 🟢 Risk-On means call-heavy with no defensive flow — the safest put-selling ground.

How to read the Sector Tape

The sector tape aggregates the daily option chain by GICS sector. For each sector it computes the put/call ratio (PCR) and the total notional of unusual put prints (contracts where today's volume exceeds existing open interest by 50%+). The signal tells you where institutions are positioning defensively vs. where they're comfortable being long.

  • PCR (put/call ratio) — put volume ÷ call volume (or OI). Above 1.0 = puts trade more than calls (defensive). Below 0.8 = call-heavy (risk-on). The OI version is more stable; the volume version is more reactive to today's flow.
  • UnusualPut$ — total notional ($ = volume × mid × 100) of put contracts where volume > 1.5× open interest AND notional > $50K. This is the UnusualWhales signal: new positions opening rather than existing ones trading hands. Large values = someone is paying up for protection.
  • Signal — derived from PCR + unusual notional. 🔴 Defensive (PCR > 1.2 AND > $2M unusual) = heavy hedging — be cautious selling puts there. 🟡 Caution = some defensive flow. 🟢 Risk-On (PCR < 0.9, < $500K unusual) = calmest put-selling ground. ⚪ Neutral = mixed.

How to use it with ChainScan

The sector tape is the weather report above the single-name scanner. A bull-put-spread TAKE verdict on a name in a 🟢 Risk-On sector is high confidence — the tape confirms nobody's hedging there. A TAKE verdict on a name in a 🔴 Defensive sector should be downgraded: institutions are actively buying puts at the strikes you'd be selling, so either skip the trade, go further OTM (0.15 delta instead of 0.20), or shorten DTE to get ahead of the hedging flow. The ETF block (SPY/QQQ/IWM) gives the macro read — if QQQ is 🔴 Defensive, every tech name on the ChainScan table carries extra risk.

The top-prints table

Shows the 15 largest unusual put prints across all sectors, sorted by notional. This is where you see the actual whale activity: which symbol, which strike, which expiration, and how much money is behind it. A single $50M put print could be one institution hedging a long book (not necessarily bearish) or a fresh directional bet. When you see clusters across multiple strikes and names in the same sector, the institutional interpretation gets stronger.

🎯 Smart Money — directional-bet detection (both sides)

Two tables surface institutional directional bets. 🐻 Bearish bets (unusual put activity): names where put buying looks like a coordinated bear bet. 🐂 Bullish bets (unusual call activity): names where call buying looks like a coordinated bull bet. The conviction score separates directional bets from dispersed hedging using three features: (1) V/OI breadth — fraction of notional in contracts with V/OI > 20×, discounted by sample size; (2) strike concentration — fraction of notional in the dominant strike cluster (within 2% of spot); (3) notional scale — saturates at $5M. Score ≥70 = strong directional bet, ≥50 = moderate, ≥30 = some clustering.

The TRO columns (D/W/M) show the trend on daily/weekly/monthly timeframes. ✅ TRO Confirmed: for bearish bets, daily AND weekly both ▼ (downtrend); for bullish bets, daily AND weekly both ▲ (uptrend). The highest-conviction signals are bets in the direction TRO already confirms. A high score with TRO NOT confirmed means the option market may be ahead of the trend indicator — an early warning.

Example (bearish): LLY on 2026-07-29 had $27.7M unusual puts, V/OI up to 284×, concentrated in 5 strikes within $20 of spot, placed at the top of a 5-day rally. TRO daily red since July 15. LLY fell 4% the next day. Example (bullish): AMD on 2026-07-29 had $28M unusual calls at the bottom of a 22% crash week ($543→$425). The calls were concentrated in Aug 7 expiry (through earnings Aug 4). AMD bounced +15% the next day on a Microsoft-led chip rebound and a $14B Core Scientific deal. Both sides of the tape are predictive.

Caveat: open interest lags one day (reported from the previous close). Volume can be driven by a single large order as easily as by distributed flow. Hedging is not the same as bearish — a put buyer may be insuring a long position, not speculating. Use the tape as a confirming colour on top of technical analysis, not as a standalone forecast.
