Daily Tape Analysis — 2026-10-12
The Story
The tape rotated defensively on 2026-10-12: semis and tech fell (SMCI -4.47%, INTC -3.01%, ORCL -2.87%, AMD -2.16%) while health care, staples, and energy rallied (MDT +3.79%, VZ +2.67%, TMUS +2.25%). Index hedges were the day's biggest flow — QQQ $53.4M in unusual puts against $58.9M in unusual calls, SPY $17.6M puts against $15.9M calls. Yesterday's conviction bets split: bearish puts were right on QQQ (-0.80%), TSLA (-1.16%), and AMD (-2.16%), while bullish calls were right on META (+3.47%), AAPL (+1.54%), and MSFT (+1.10%). The one new shift is MSFT, which carries the tape's highest bullish score (78) on $23.7M of 208x V/OI calls while $15.5M of puts work against it. Every sector reads "caution" on the put side except energy, materials, and utilities.
Bearish Bets to Watch
QQQ (score 60) — $53.4M puts across 85 contracts, 90x V/OI, 13 strikes clustered. Headline print: 751 put exp 10/30, $15.92M at 21.5x V/OI, just 0.7% OTM. Spot $745.81, down 0.80% today and yesterday's QQQ put bet was right; no TRO confirmation yet.
MSFT (score 53) — $15.5M puts, 54x V/OI, 4 strikes. Biggest print 530 put 11/20 $3.54M; 555 put 10/30 at 32.6x V/OI. Spot $541.09, up 1.10% today — the puts are fighting a much larger call stack (score 78). No TRO.
CAT (score 47) — $9.3M puts, 64x V/OI, TRO confirmed. Key print: 790 put 11/27 $1.73M at 63.9x V/OI. Spot $799.51, down 10.24% over 60 days; the 790 line is the pivot.
IWM (score 46) — $8.6M puts, 213x V/OI, TRO confirmed. 298 put 10/30 $0.86M at 213x and 277 put 11/20 $3.17M. Spot $277.82 sits near its 60-day low; small caps keep rolling over.
META (score 45) — $29.6M puts, 31x V/OI, 4 strikes clustered at 730/740/745 (11/20). Spot $743.02, up 3.47% today so the puts are wrong at the open; the $48M call stack says dip buyers are still in. No TRO.
Bullish Bets to Watch
MSFT (score 78) — $23.7M calls, 208x V/OI, TRO confirmed. Headline print: 550 call 11/13 $15.4M at 50x V/OI, 1.6% OTM. Yesterday's MSFT call was validated (+1.10%) and spot $541.09 is within 2% of the strike.
SPY (score 51) — $15.9M calls, 507x V/OI, TRO confirmed. 778 call 10/23 (at-the-money) $4.35M at 9.6x V/OI. Spot $777.96, effectively flat (-0.08%).
QQQ (score 42) — $58.9M calls, 154x V/OI, 15 strikes, TRO confirmed. Largest print 770 call 10/30 $4.5M. This runs directly against the score-60 put stack — a two-way index battle.
AAPL (score 40) — $11.1M calls, 191x V/OI, TRO confirmed. Spot $341.05, up 1.54% and yesterday's bullish bet was right. The 305 call 10/30 $2.4M print is deep in-the-money (-10.6%).
AMD (score 39) — $23.3M calls, 86x V/OI. Spot fell 2.16% and yesterday's call was wrong; the 620 call 10/30 $4.5M at 5.5x V/OI is the tell. No TRO.
The Oracle Read
QQQ is the fulcrum: score-60 puts and score-42 calls both in the tens of millions, with the 751/737 10/30 puts as the downside line and 770 calls as the upside. MSFT is the cleanest single-direction trade on the tape (score 78, TRO confirmed, $23.7M at 208x). Defensive rotation is confirmed by structure — health care, staples, and energy are the only risk-on sectors — so fade the semis and let the QQQ put wall at 751 decide direction.
Names to Watch at the Open
- MSFT — long; 550 call wall, must hold $535–540.
- QQQ — 745–751 is the battleground; the 751 put stack caps the index.
- AAPL — long; above $340 with yesterday's calls validated.
- AMD — $594 spot vs $23M call flow; 620 is the line.
- META — two-way; $743 after +3.47%, watch 745/740.

Total unusual put notional: $125.5M across 10 sectors. Sectors with 🔴 Defensive signal have BOTH high PCR (>1.2) AND >$2M of unusual put buying — institutions are actively hedging there. 🟢 Risk-On means call-heavy with no defensive flow — the safest put-selling ground.
How to read the Sector Tape
The sector tape aggregates the daily option chain by GICS sector. For each sector it computes the put/call ratio (PCR) and the total notional of unusual put prints (contracts where today's volume exceeds existing open interest by 50%+). The signal tells you where institutions are positioning defensively vs. where they're comfortable being long.
- PCR (put/call ratio) — put volume ÷ call volume (or OI). Above 1.0 = puts trade more than calls (defensive). Below 0.8 = call-heavy (risk-on). The OI version is more stable; the volume version is more reactive to today's flow.
- UnusualPut$ — total notional ($ = volume × mid × 100) of put contracts where volume > 1.5× open interest AND notional > $50K. This is the UnusualWhales signal: new positions opening rather than existing ones trading hands. Large values = someone is paying up for protection.
- Signal — derived from PCR + unusual notional. 🔴 Defensive (PCR > 1.2 AND > $2M unusual) = heavy hedging — be cautious selling puts there. 🟡 Caution = some defensive flow. 🟢 Risk-On (PCR < 0.9, < $500K unusual) = calmest put-selling ground. ⚪ Neutral = mixed.
How to use it with ChainScan
The sector tape is the weather report above the single-name scanner. A bull-put-spread TAKE verdict on a name in a 🟢 Risk-On sector is high confidence — the tape confirms nobody's hedging there. A TAKE verdict on a name in a 🔴 Defensive sector should be downgraded: institutions are actively buying puts at the strikes you'd be selling, so either skip the trade, go further OTM (0.15 delta instead of 0.20), or shorten DTE to get ahead of the hedging flow. The ETF block (SPY/QQQ/IWM) gives the macro read — if QQQ is 🔴 Defensive, every tech name on the ChainScan table carries extra risk.
The top-prints table
Shows the 15 largest unusual put prints across all sectors, sorted by notional. This is where you see the actual whale activity: which symbol, which strike, which expiration, and how much money is behind it. A single $50M put print could be one institution hedging a long book (not necessarily bearish) or a fresh directional bet. When you see clusters across multiple strikes and names in the same sector, the institutional interpretation gets stronger.
🎯 Smart Money — directional-bet detection (both sides)
Two tables surface institutional directional bets. 🐻 Bearish bets (unusual put activity): names where put buying looks like a coordinated bear bet. 🐂 Bullish bets (unusual call activity): names where call buying looks like a coordinated bull bet. The conviction score separates directional bets from dispersed hedging using three features: (1) V/OI breadth — fraction of notional in contracts with V/OI > 20×, discounted by sample size; (2) strike concentration — fraction of notional in the dominant strike cluster (within 2% of spot); (3) notional scale — saturates at $5M. Score ≥70 = strong directional bet, ≥50 = moderate, ≥30 = some clustering.
The TRO columns (D/W/M) show the trend on daily/weekly/monthly timeframes. ✅ TRO Confirmed: for bearish bets, daily AND weekly both ▼ (downtrend); for bullish bets, daily AND weekly both ▲ (uptrend). The highest-conviction signals are bets in the direction TRO already confirms. A high score with TRO NOT confirmed means the option market may be ahead of the trend indicator — an early warning.
Example (bearish): LLY on 2026-07-29 had $27.7M unusual puts, V/OI up to 284×, concentrated in 5 strikes within $20 of spot, placed at the top of a 5-day rally. TRO daily red since July 15. LLY fell 4% the next day. Example (bullish): AMD on 2026-07-29 had $28M unusual calls at the bottom of a 22% crash week ($543→$425). The calls were concentrated in Aug 7 expiry (through earnings Aug 4). AMD bounced +15% the next day on a Microsoft-led chip rebound and a $14B Core Scientific deal. Both sides of the tape are predictive.
Caveat: open interest lags one day (reported from the previous close). Volume can be driven by a single large order as easily as by distributed flow. Hedging is not the same as bearish — a put buyer may be insuring a long position, not speculating. Use the tape as a confirming colour on top of technical analysis, not as a standalone forecast.
