Daily Tape Analysis — 2026-10-09
The Story
Indexes closed higher — SPY +0.56% to 778.60, QQQ +0.46% to 751.84, IWM +0.47% — but the tape was split, not broad. Telecoms broke down (TMUS -13.23% to 148.57, VZ -10.15% to 41.65, CHTR -5.76%) while megacap tech and discretionary ran (AMZN +3.27%, MSFT +2.39%, ORCL +4.44%, PLTR +5.16%). Yesterday's bullish calls paid off — TSLA, ORCL, GS, SPY, CAT all rose — while yesterday's bearish bets on AMZN, TSLA, MSFT, GS, and ORCL all failed. Today's shift is defensive: $91.9M in QQQ puts and $24.1M in SPY puts (put/call 1.53) arrived even as call money chased AMD ($22.1M) and AMZN ($20.3M). The tape is hedging the top while still buying single-name breakouts.
Bearish Bets to Watch
AAPL (score 59) — biggest single-name bear conviction, $18.5M puts across 22 contracts, up from $12.7M yesterday. Headline is the 330 Nov-27 put: 10,120 contracts at 632.5x V/OI for $8.68M, 1.7% OTM against spot 335.86. Yesterday's AAPL put was right (-1.34%); no TRO confirmation, but the same-day call flow ($23.3M) makes this a two-sided name.
TSLA (score 57) — $16.0M puts across 34 contracts, clustered at 382/385/388/390 expiring 10/23–11/13. Spot +1.99% to 382.50, so these fade the rally at the 385 wall; largest prints are $2.11M at 385 (Oct 30, 4.3x) and $1.96M at 385 (Oct 23). No TRO; $12.7M in calls sits on the other side.
META (score 53) — $2.2M puts, small but directional: 715 Nov-13 put at 33.9x V/OI for $0.82M against spot 718.12. Sizing is thin versus the $41.6M–$136.2M put days META printed in September. No TRO; the call side (score 43, TRO ✅) opposes it.
QQQ (score 52) — $91.9M puts, the largest in the market. Headline print is the 745 Dec-18 put, 25,110 contracts at 7.1x V/OI for $51.65M (0.9% OTM against 751.84). Spot +0.46% and the call side carries TRO ✅, so the put wall reads as protection, not a directional break.
MSFT (score 49) — $3.3M puts, led by $1.43M at 540 (Nov 20, 5.0x) and a 105x print at 538 (Oct 21). Spot +2.39% to 535.20 is pressing toward those strikes — a top-of-range bet. No TRO; yesterday's MSFT bearish bet was wrong (+2.39%).
Bullish Bets to Watch
AMD (score 64, TRO ✅) — top bullish conviction, $22.1M calls. The 620 Oct-30 call traded 6,727 contracts at 11.9x V/OI for $14.34M (2.1% OTM); the 615 Nov-13 call added $2.99M at 27.4x. Spot fell -2.18% to 607.29 despite the flow, and $9.9M in puts (550 strike) sits on the other side — a two-sided battleground at 620.
AMZN (score 55, TRO ✅) — $20.3M calls; the 275 Oct-30 call traded 28,217 contracts at 5.5x V/OI for $16.08M (4.8% OTM). Spot +3.27% to 262.42, and yesterday's bearish AMZN bet failed. Momentum confirmed.
TSLA (score 55) — $12.7M calls; the 385 Nov-13 call traded 3,308 contracts at 17.5x V/OI for $6.4M. Spot +1.99%, and yesterday's TSLA calls were right. Both sides are active at 385 — that strike is the line.
SPY (score 51, TRO ✅) — $20.0M calls, but the 790 Oct-23 call ($4.39M) fights $24.1M of puts (put/call 1.53). Yesterday's SPY calls were right (+0.56%); today the index tape is hedged, not directional.
AAPL (score 46, TRO ✅) — $23.3M calls vs $18.5M puts; largest call print is $3.8M at 340 (Oct 23, 1.7x). The tape's most two-sided name — heavy flow both ways, with the put side carrying more conviction. TRO confirmed on the call side.
The Oracle Read
The telecom breakdown (TMUS -13.23%, VZ -10.15%) is the cleanest setup on the board — put flow arrived the same day the move printed, and both names carry TRO confirmation, so don't fade it. AMD is the real test tomorrow: $22.1M of TRO-confirmed calls against $9.9M of puts and a -2.18% fade means buyers must reclaim 620 or the call is in trouble. Index flow (QQQ 745, SPY 741) reads as protection under a top-heavy tape, so expect single-name divergence over a clean market move.
Names to Watch at the Open
- TMUS — down, 148.57; TRO-confirmed breakdown, don't chase a bounce.
- VZ — down, 41.65; same telecom breakdown, TRO ✅.
- AMD — two-sided, 607.29; $22.1M calls vs $9.9M puts, 620 is the line.
- AMZN — up, 262.42; 275 call target, TRO ✅, +3.27% momentum.
- QQQ — 751.84; the 745 Dec put wall ($51.65M) is the hedge level to hold.

Total unusual put notional: $82.3M across 10 sectors. Sectors with 🔴 Defensive signal have BOTH high PCR (>1.2) AND >$2M of unusual put buying — institutions are actively hedging there. 🟢 Risk-On means call-heavy with no defensive flow — the safest put-selling ground.
How to read the Sector Tape
The sector tape aggregates the daily option chain by GICS sector. For each sector it computes the put/call ratio (PCR) and the total notional of unusual put prints (contracts where today's volume exceeds existing open interest by 50%+). The signal tells you where institutions are positioning defensively vs. where they're comfortable being long.
- PCR (put/call ratio) — put volume ÷ call volume (or OI). Above 1.0 = puts trade more than calls (defensive). Below 0.8 = call-heavy (risk-on). The OI version is more stable; the volume version is more reactive to today's flow.
- UnusualPut$ — total notional ($ = volume × mid × 100) of put contracts where volume > 1.5× open interest AND notional > $50K. This is the UnusualWhales signal: new positions opening rather than existing ones trading hands. Large values = someone is paying up for protection.
- Signal — derived from PCR + unusual notional. 🔴 Defensive (PCR > 1.2 AND > $2M unusual) = heavy hedging — be cautious selling puts there. 🟡 Caution = some defensive flow. 🟢 Risk-On (PCR < 0.9, < $500K unusual) = calmest put-selling ground. ⚪ Neutral = mixed.
How to use it with ChainScan
The sector tape is the weather report above the single-name scanner. A bull-put-spread TAKE verdict on a name in a 🟢 Risk-On sector is high confidence — the tape confirms nobody's hedging there. A TAKE verdict on a name in a 🔴 Defensive sector should be downgraded: institutions are actively buying puts at the strikes you'd be selling, so either skip the trade, go further OTM (0.15 delta instead of 0.20), or shorten DTE to get ahead of the hedging flow. The ETF block (SPY/QQQ/IWM) gives the macro read — if QQQ is 🔴 Defensive, every tech name on the ChainScan table carries extra risk.
The top-prints table
Shows the 15 largest unusual put prints across all sectors, sorted by notional. This is where you see the actual whale activity: which symbol, which strike, which expiration, and how much money is behind it. A single $50M put print could be one institution hedging a long book (not necessarily bearish) or a fresh directional bet. When you see clusters across multiple strikes and names in the same sector, the institutional interpretation gets stronger.
🎯 Smart Money — directional-bet detection (both sides)
Two tables surface institutional directional bets. 🐻 Bearish bets (unusual put activity): names where put buying looks like a coordinated bear bet. 🐂 Bullish bets (unusual call activity): names where call buying looks like a coordinated bull bet. The conviction score separates directional bets from dispersed hedging using three features: (1) V/OI breadth — fraction of notional in contracts with V/OI > 20×, discounted by sample size; (2) strike concentration — fraction of notional in the dominant strike cluster (within 2% of spot); (3) notional scale — saturates at $5M. Score ≥70 = strong directional bet, ≥50 = moderate, ≥30 = some clustering.
The TRO columns (D/W/M) show the trend on daily/weekly/monthly timeframes. ✅ TRO Confirmed: for bearish bets, daily AND weekly both ▼ (downtrend); for bullish bets, daily AND weekly both ▲ (uptrend). The highest-conviction signals are bets in the direction TRO already confirms. A high score with TRO NOT confirmed means the option market may be ahead of the trend indicator — an early warning.
Example (bearish): LLY on 2026-07-29 had $27.7M unusual puts, V/OI up to 284×, concentrated in 5 strikes within $20 of spot, placed at the top of a 5-day rally. TRO daily red since July 15. LLY fell 4% the next day. Example (bullish): AMD on 2026-07-29 had $28M unusual calls at the bottom of a 22% crash week ($543→$425). The calls were concentrated in Aug 7 expiry (through earnings Aug 4). AMD bounced +15% the next day on a Microsoft-led chip rebound and a $14B Core Scientific deal. Both sides of the tape are predictive.
Caveat: open interest lags one day (reported from the previous close). Volume can be driven by a single large order as easily as by distributed flow. Hedging is not the same as bearish — a put buyer may be insuring a long position, not speculating. Use the tape as a confirming colour on top of technical analysis, not as a standalone forecast.
