Daily Tape Analysis — 2026-10-05

The Story

Indexes ripped: SPY +0.65% to $774.74, QQQ +0.94% to $756.23, IWM +0.54% to $283.11, with single-name follow-through in TSLA (+2.20%), NVDA (+2.09%), and AVGO (+2.08%). Yesterday's conviction put buyers were uniformly wrong — every bearish bet in the validation table missed as the tape rallied. The tape flipped defensive today anyway: $112.9M total unusual put notional, with SPY PCR_v at 2.37 and QQQ/IWM all in "defensive" signal. The one big shift is index-level put accumulation — SPY 675 (12.9% OTM) and QQQ 745 puts are the largest prints on the board.

Bearish Bets to Watch

IWM (score 68) — $43.7M puts across 5 strikes, 588x V/OI, TRO confirmed. The 299 strike (Oct 16, 587.6x V/OI on 8 OI, $7.4M) is already 5.6% in-the-money, and 267/269/268 Nov 20 puts total $20.1M at 5.0–5.7% OTM. Spot closed +0.54% today against a 54-day drift of -4.40%, so this is a top-of-range hedge, not a collapse bet.

SPY (score 57) — $80.4M puts across 15 strikes, 867x V/OI, PCR_v 2.37. The 675 Nov 30 put is the single largest bearish print on the tape: $13.1M at 79.7x V/OI, 12.9% OTM. 736 and 733 Nov 20 puts add $22.6M at ~5% OTM — a wall of protection just under spot.

QQQ (score 56) — $83.6M puts across 13 strikes, 366x V/OI. Two 745 puts (Oct 30 $10.7M, Nov 20 $10.4M) sit 1.5% OTM, the tightest bearish cluster on the board. Spot is at 55-day highs ($756.23), so this reads as a fade-the-move position.

META (score 63) — $5.0M puts across 4 clustered strikes, 246x V/OI, but spot ran +1.87% today to $741.68. The 735 Oct 16 put ($1.76M) is 0.9% OTM and 745 Oct 14 (246x, $0.41M) is a same-week fade against a fresh high. No TRO confirmation yet.

TSLA (score 48) — $19.4M puts, 296x V/OI, TRO confirmed. Puts are bought in-the-money: 395 Oct 30/Nov 6 and 400 Nov 6 (77.7x, $2.2M) are 4–5% ITM, unusual for a name that just rose +2.20%. The 370 Nov 6 put (+2.3% OTM, 17x, $2.1M) is the only true downside strike.

Bullish Bets to Watch

IWM (score 75) — $27.3M calls across 5 strikes, 65x V/OI, top bullish conviction on the board. The 284 strike (Oct 30, 40.1x, $14.2M) sits 0.3% OTM, directly opposing the 267–270 put cluster — the same index is being bet both ways 3% apart.

AMD (score 50) — $59.1M calls, 95x V/OI, TRO confirmed. The 620 Nov 20 call is $42.6M (2.7x V/OI), 1.9% in-the-money, with 640/660/670 strikes laddering up to $11.1M more. Spot is +16.39% over 54 days and closed -0.28% today, so this is a continuation bet, not a breakout entry.

TSLA (score 49) — $65.9M calls, 55x V/OI. The 380 Oct 16 call ($26.1M) is 0.4% OTM, and 375/385 strikes add $13.8M. Paired with the ITM puts above, TSLA is the most two-sided single name on the tape.

MSFT (score 44) — $14.0M calls, 1738x V/OI, TRO confirmed. The 575 Oct 23 call printed at 1737.7x V/OI ($0.34M) 9.5% OTM, and 570 Oct 30 ($3.52M, 4.7x) is 8.6% OTM. Spot +1.49% today to $525.01; yesterday's bullish MSFT call was correct and the call buyers are doubling into higher strikes.

LLY (score 50) — $3.5M calls, 68x V/OI, TRO confirmed. 1240 Nov 6 (30.7x, $0.71M) and 1190 Nov 13 (68x, $0.57M) target 4–8% upside from $1143.70. Spot has gone nowhere for a month (-1.68% over 54 days), so this is a fresh long-entry attempt at the bottom of range.

The Oracle Read

The strongest setups are directional opposites: AMD's $59.1M TRO-confirmed call block (620 strike) against a $80–84M index put wall in SPY/QQQ that sits just below spot. Put buyers were 0-for-10 yesterday, so the index puts are more likely re-hedging into strength than a top call. Watch whether SPY holds 770 (the Oct 15 put level) — if it does, AMD and TSLA calls are the clean long side; if it breaks, the QQQ 745 puts are already positioned 1.5% below.

Names to Watch at the Open

  • AMD — long bias; key 620 (Nov 20 $42.6M call), TRO confirmed, +16% 54-day trend.
  • SPY — defensive; key 675 (Nov 30 $13.1M put, 12.9% OTM) with 770/772 short-dated puts overhead.
  • TSLA — two-sided; calls at 380/385, ITM puts at 395/400 — key pivot 380.
  • IWM — spread trade; puts 267–270 vs calls 284 — key 284, the call/put battleground 3% apart.
  • META — short-dated fade; 735/745 same-week puts against a fresh high — key 735.

Total unusual put notional: $112.9M across 10 sectors. Sectors with 🔴 Defensive signal have BOTH high PCR (>1.2) AND >$2M of unusual put buying — institutions are actively hedging there. 🟢 Risk-On means call-heavy with no defensive flow — the safest put-selling ground.

How to read the Sector Tape

The sector tape aggregates the daily option chain by GICS sector. For each sector it computes the put/call ratio (PCR) and the total notional of unusual put prints (contracts where today's volume exceeds existing open interest by 50%+). The signal tells you where institutions are positioning defensively vs. where they're comfortable being long.

  • PCR (put/call ratio) — put volume ÷ call volume (or OI). Above 1.0 = puts trade more than calls (defensive). Below 0.8 = call-heavy (risk-on). The OI version is more stable; the volume version is more reactive to today's flow.
  • UnusualPut$ — total notional ($ = volume × mid × 100) of put contracts where volume > 1.5× open interest AND notional > $50K. This is the UnusualWhales signal: new positions opening rather than existing ones trading hands. Large values = someone is paying up for protection.
  • Signal — derived from PCR + unusual notional. 🔴 Defensive (PCR > 1.2 AND > $2M unusual) = heavy hedging — be cautious selling puts there. 🟡 Caution = some defensive flow. 🟢 Risk-On (PCR < 0.9, < $500K unusual) = calmest put-selling ground. ⚪ Neutral = mixed.

How to use it with ChainScan

The sector tape is the weather report above the single-name scanner. A bull-put-spread TAKE verdict on a name in a 🟢 Risk-On sector is high confidence — the tape confirms nobody's hedging there. A TAKE verdict on a name in a 🔴 Defensive sector should be downgraded: institutions are actively buying puts at the strikes you'd be selling, so either skip the trade, go further OTM (0.15 delta instead of 0.20), or shorten DTE to get ahead of the hedging flow. The ETF block (SPY/QQQ/IWM) gives the macro read — if QQQ is 🔴 Defensive, every tech name on the ChainScan table carries extra risk.

The top-prints table

Shows the 15 largest unusual put prints across all sectors, sorted by notional. This is where you see the actual whale activity: which symbol, which strike, which expiration, and how much money is behind it. A single $50M put print could be one institution hedging a long book (not necessarily bearish) or a fresh directional bet. When you see clusters across multiple strikes and names in the same sector, the institutional interpretation gets stronger.

🎯 Smart Money — directional-bet detection (both sides)

Two tables surface institutional directional bets. 🐻 Bearish bets (unusual put activity): names where put buying looks like a coordinated bear bet. 🐂 Bullish bets (unusual call activity): names where call buying looks like a coordinated bull bet. The conviction score separates directional bets from dispersed hedging using three features: (1) V/OI breadth — fraction of notional in contracts with V/OI > 20×, discounted by sample size; (2) strike concentration — fraction of notional in the dominant strike cluster (within 2% of spot); (3) notional scale — saturates at $5M. Score ≥70 = strong directional bet, ≥50 = moderate, ≥30 = some clustering.

The TRO columns (D/W/M) show the trend on daily/weekly/monthly timeframes. ✅ TRO Confirmed: for bearish bets, daily AND weekly both ▼ (downtrend); for bullish bets, daily AND weekly both ▲ (uptrend). The highest-conviction signals are bets in the direction TRO already confirms. A high score with TRO NOT confirmed means the option market may be ahead of the trend indicator — an early warning.

Example (bearish): LLY on 2026-07-29 had $27.7M unusual puts, V/OI up to 284×, concentrated in 5 strikes within $20 of spot, placed at the top of a 5-day rally. TRO daily red since July 15. LLY fell 4% the next day. Example (bullish): AMD on 2026-07-29 had $28M unusual calls at the bottom of a 22% crash week ($543→$425). The calls were concentrated in Aug 7 expiry (through earnings Aug 4). AMD bounced +15% the next day on a Microsoft-led chip rebound and a $14B Core Scientific deal. Both sides of the tape are predictive.

Caveat: open interest lags one day (reported from the previous close). Volume can be driven by a single large order as easily as by distributed flow. Hedging is not the same as bearish — a put buyer may be insuring a long position, not speculating. Use the tape as a confirming colour on top of technical analysis, not as a standalone forecast.
