Daily Tape Analysis — 2026-09-11

The Story

The market bounced: SPY +0.84% to 764.22, QQQ +0.85% to 715.00, IWM +0.44% to 289.09. Yesterday's bearish conviction bets were wrong across the board (SPY +0.84%, AAPL +1.99%, TSLA +0.50%), while yesterday's bullish bets mostly paid (GS +0.90%, AMD +2.44%, AAPL +1.99%). ORCL fell 8.36% to 150.09 — the one name where the put buyers were right. Today's shift: heavy index put buying ($38.3M IWM, $53.0M QQQ, $67.1M SPY) landed even as spot rose, so protection is being bought into strength. The only clean single-stock short is ORCL, where $3.0M of puts hit the 155 strike at 107x V/OI after the 8% drop.

Bearish Bets to Watch

IWM (score 59) — $38.3M puts at 182x V/OI across 6 strikes, led by the 277/Oct-16 put (64,604 vol, $18.54M, 4.3x V/OI) and a 290/Oct-30 put at 154.9x. But the book is two-sided: IWM also carries the #2 bullish bet ($17.2M calls, 545x at 278), so this reads as a hedge cluster rather than a clean directional short. Spot +0.44% on the day, -2.38% over 38 days.

ORCL (score 58) — post-drop continuation bet. Spot fell 8.36% to 150.09, and $3.0M of puts hit with the 155/Oct-30 put at 107x V/OI ($1.77M) as the anchor. Puts are clustered at 155/152 and down to 132, so the trade is for continued downside after the gap. No TRO confirmation.

QQQ (score 56) — $53.0M puts across 12 strikes, anchored by the 690/Oct-02 put (21,288 vol, 26.7x, $10.01M) and a 715/Sep-21 put at 24.1x. PCR_v is 1.72 and the 39-day trend is flat (+0.81%), so this is protection against a Nasdaq pullback rather than a crash bet.

TSLA (score 52) — $5.6M puts with $2.37M at the 365/Sep-25 put (2.4x) and a 362/Sep-21 put at 15.2x. Yesterday's TSLA bearish bet was wrong (+0.50%), and the 39-day chart shows a wide 22.2% range with no trend. No TRO confirmation.

AVGO (score 48, TRO ✅) — the only TRO-confirmed bearish name in the top tier. $1.5M puts led by a 400/Sep-21 put at 170x V/OI ($0.67M) and 405/Sep-21 at 80x, both 10-12% out of the money. Spot +0.25% on the day, -6.23% over 38 days.

Bullish Bets to Watch

GS (score 65) — the strongest bullish conviction on the tape. $5.3M calls across 4 strikes, led by the 925/Sep-25 call at 44x V/OI ($1.86M) and 965/Sep-25 at 29x ($1.26M). Yesterday's GS bullish bet (score 81) was right (+0.90%), so this is a repeat buyer pressing the same thesis. Spot $1028.89, -5.00% over 38 days.

META (score 49) — the single largest bullish print. $11.9M calls, anchored by the 660/Sep-25 call ($7.04M, 4.6x V/OI, +1.9% from spot $647.97). Also carries $7.1M of puts (score 42), so this is a two-sided event cluster. Spot +0.63% on the day, +0.13% over 38 days.

AVGO (score 49) — $3.3M calls at 782x V/OI across 3 strikes, the highest V/OI on the bull side. Spot is -6.23% over 38 days, so the calls are betting on a reversal that hasn't shown up yet. Same name carries the TRO-confirmed short above.

AMD (score 40, TRO ✅) — TRO-confirmed with $8.6M calls at 68x across 5 strikes, led by the 515/Oct-09 call (7.7x, $2.5M). Spot +2.44% to 516.12 and yesterday's AMD bullish bet was right (+2.44%). Cleanest momentum-long with TRO confirmation.

The Oracle Read

The strongest signal is ORCL — a real 8.36% gap down plus fresh 107x puts is a continuation setup, not a hedge. The index put wave (IWM, QQQ, SPY) is protection into strength, which means the bounce is not trusted; treat it as a range trade rather than a top. On the long side, GS and AMD are the only names where conviction, TRO, and yesterday's validation all line up.

Names to Watch at the Open

  • ORCL — short bias. 155 put ($1.77M at 107x) after -8.36%; watch 152 as first support.
  • IWM — two-sided. $38.4M puts vs $17.2M calls; 277 put is the bear anchor, 278/281 the bull line.
  • META — long bias. 660/Sep-25 calls ($7.04M); needs to clear $660.
  • GS — long bias. 925/Sep-25 call at 44x, repeat buyer; watch $1038-1040.
  • AVGO — both ways, TRO on the short side. 400/Sep-21 puts at 170x vs 782x calls; $362 is the pivot.

Total unusual put notional: $71.5M across 10 sectors. Sectors with 🔴 Defensive signal have BOTH high PCR (>1.2) AND >$2M of unusual put buying — institutions are actively hedging there. 🟢 Risk-On means call-heavy with no defensive flow — the safest put-selling ground.

How to read the Sector Tape

The sector tape aggregates the daily option chain by GICS sector. For each sector it computes the put/call ratio (PCR) and the total notional of unusual put prints (contracts where today's volume exceeds existing open interest by 50%+). The signal tells you where institutions are positioning defensively vs. where they're comfortable being long.

  • PCR (put/call ratio) — put volume ÷ call volume (or OI). Above 1.0 = puts trade more than calls (defensive). Below 0.8 = call-heavy (risk-on). The OI version is more stable; the volume version is more reactive to today's flow.
  • UnusualPut$ — total notional ($ = volume × mid × 100) of put contracts where volume > 1.5× open interest AND notional > $50K. This is the UnusualWhales signal: new positions opening rather than existing ones trading hands. Large values = someone is paying up for protection.
  • Signal — derived from PCR + unusual notional. 🔴 Defensive (PCR > 1.2 AND > $2M unusual) = heavy hedging — be cautious selling puts there. 🟡 Caution = some defensive flow. 🟢 Risk-On (PCR < 0.9, < $500K unusual) = calmest put-selling ground. ⚪ Neutral = mixed.

How to use it with ChainScan

The sector tape is the weather report above the single-name scanner. A bull-put-spread TAKE verdict on a name in a 🟢 Risk-On sector is high confidence — the tape confirms nobody's hedging there. A TAKE verdict on a name in a 🔴 Defensive sector should be downgraded: institutions are actively buying puts at the strikes you'd be selling, so either skip the trade, go further OTM (0.15 delta instead of 0.20), or shorten DTE to get ahead of the hedging flow. The ETF block (SPY/QQQ/IWM) gives the macro read — if QQQ is 🔴 Defensive, every tech name on the ChainScan table carries extra risk.

The top-prints table

Shows the 15 largest unusual put prints across all sectors, sorted by notional. This is where you see the actual whale activity: which symbol, which strike, which expiration, and how much money is behind it. A single $50M put print could be one institution hedging a long book (not necessarily bearish) or a fresh directional bet. When you see clusters across multiple strikes and names in the same sector, the institutional interpretation gets stronger.

🎯 Smart Money — directional-bet detection (both sides)

Two tables surface institutional directional bets. 🐻 Bearish bets (unusual put activity): names where put buying looks like a coordinated bear bet. 🐂 Bullish bets (unusual call activity): names where call buying looks like a coordinated bull bet. The conviction score separates directional bets from dispersed hedging using three features: (1) V/OI breadth — fraction of notional in contracts with V/OI > 20×, discounted by sample size; (2) strike concentration — fraction of notional in the dominant strike cluster (within 2% of spot); (3) notional scale — saturates at $5M. Score ≥70 = strong directional bet, ≥50 = moderate, ≥30 = some clustering.

The TRO columns (D/W/M) show the trend on daily/weekly/monthly timeframes. ✅ TRO Confirmed: for bearish bets, daily AND weekly both ▼ (downtrend); for bullish bets, daily AND weekly both ▲ (uptrend). The highest-conviction signals are bets in the direction TRO already confirms. A high score with TRO NOT confirmed means the option market may be ahead of the trend indicator — an early warning.

Example (bearish): LLY on 2026-07-29 had $27.7M unusual puts, V/OI up to 284×, concentrated in 5 strikes within $20 of spot, placed at the top of a 5-day rally. TRO daily red since July 15. LLY fell 4% the next day. Example (bullish): AMD on 2026-07-29 had $28M unusual calls at the bottom of a 22% crash week ($543→$425). The calls were concentrated in Aug 7 expiry (through earnings Aug 4). AMD bounced +15% the next day on a Microsoft-led chip rebound and a $14B Core Scientific deal. Both sides of the tape are predictive.

Caveat: open interest lags one day (reported from the previous close). Volume can be driven by a single large order as easily as by distributed flow. Hedging is not the same as bearish — a put buyer may be insuring a long position, not speculating. Use the tape as a confirming colour on top of technical analysis, not as a standalone forecast.
