Daily Tape Analysis — 2026-10-08

The Story

Semis broke the tape while defensives caught the bid: T -6.42%, ORCL -5.66%, INTC -5.01%, SMCI -4.83%, AVGO -4.37%, AMD -3.88%, NVDA -2.83% against XOM +2.74%, CVX +3.11%, PM +4.06%, PEP +3.93%, ACN +5.95%. Yesterday's bearish book paid off — AMD, TSLA, QQQ, and MSFT all fell — while the bullish book failed (CAT -2.18%, AMD -3.88%, INTC -5.01%, AMZN -2.23%, GOOGL -0.64%, only INTU +2.20% right). Index puts are still the headline: IWM $192.8M, QQQ $112.6M, SPY $111.4M, all defensive PCR. Today's big shift is the rotation — money left chips for energy, staples, and defensive industrials, and the put flow is concentrated in small caps (IWM 588x V/OI, TRO-confirmed). One name is fighting the flush: ORCL took a -5.66% hit but printed $25.0M in calls at +7% to +14% OTM.

Bearish Bets to Watch

AMZN (score 55) — $5.7M puts, 444x max V/OI, 3 strikes, no TRO. The anchor is the 258 Oct-16 put at $3.72M (7.9x) plus a fresh 260 Oct-21 line at 444x. Spot fell -2.23% today and yesterday's bullish call bet on AMZN failed (-2.23%), so the put side is now the paying side.

COST (score 55) — $5.4M puts, 112x V/OI across 13 contracts, no TRO. Led by the 1080 Dec-18 put at 43x ($1.13M) and a 945 Nov-06 at 112.5x; the position doubled from $2.6M yesterday. Spot rose +0.59% today, so this bet has not paid yet — it is a fade against a name up 1.82% over 57 days.

TSLA (score 53) — $12.6M puts, 96x V/OI, but the book is split: $21.6M in calls (681x) is the larger side. The 375 Oct-16 put ($5.78M, ATM) anchors the bear leg against 378/372 Oct-16 calls. Spot -0.70% today, -1.34% over 58 days; no TRO on either side.

IWM / QQQ / SPY (grouped) — index protection, not single-name conviction. IWM $192.8M puts at 588x (TRO ✅), QQQ $112.6M at 112x, SPY $111.4M at 301x; all three sit at defensive PCR (IWM 2.87, SPY 1.68, QQQ 1.21). IWM's 295 Oct-16 put ($60.8M) and 300 Oct-16 ($29.2M at 12.3x) are the anchor lines, and IWM is the cleanest bearish setup on the board despite closing +0.05%.

GS (score 45) — $20.8M puts, 50x V/OI, TRO ✅. The 1005 Oct-16 put carries $13.5M at -14% OTM. GS is -18.57% over 57 days and closed -0.62% today; the TRO confirmation aligns with the multi-day downtrend.

Bullish Bets to Watch

META (score 69) — top conviction, $2.8M calls, 149x V/OI, 5 strikes, TRO ✅. The 720 Oct-19 call (149x, OI of 1) and the 718/712 Oct-16 cluster are near-dated and near-the-money. Spot is flat (-0.01% today) after a -2.45% drop yesterday; small notional but the highest-confidence long on the tape.

TSLA (score 64) — $21.6M calls, 681x V/OI, 4 strikes, no TRO. The 378 Oct-16 call ($4.3M, 5.3x) and 372 Oct-16 ($4.0M) lead; the call side is nearly 2x the put side. This contradicts the bearish 53 score — the tape is long TSLA short-term even as the stock drifts.

ORCL (score 61) — $25.0M calls, 31x V/OI, no TRO. The 145 Oct-30 call ($12.49M at 25.6x) and 155 Oct-30 ($4.67M at 28.6x) are +7.1% and +14.4% OTM after a -5.66% flush today. A dip-buy: ORCL is +6.70% over 57 days but -8.36% and -5.66% on its last two down days.

SBUX (score 54) — $7.7M calls, 572x V/OI, no TRO. The 95 Nov-20 call ($2.70M) and 90 Nov-20 ($2.41M at 29.3x) anchor a name down -10.84% over 57 days. Spot -0.41% today; this is a value rebound bet that has not printed yet.

SPY / QQQ (grouped) — index longs hedging the index shorts. SPY $23.6M calls at 452x (TRO ✅), QQQ $56.0M at 168x (TRO ✅). Read these as the other side of the put book rather than fresh bullish direction.

The Oracle Read

The tape is hedging a rotation, not selling a top — index puts are massive ($416.8M combined) but concentrated in small caps while single-name conviction is split. IWM is the strongest signal on the board: $192.8M in puts, 588x V/OI, TRO-confirmed, pointing toward 268–270 on continued small-cap weakness. The cleanest contrarian long is ORCL's $25.0M of +7% to +14% OTM calls, and META's TRO-confirmed call cluster says the dip below 720 is being bought.

Names to Watch at the Open

  • IWM — bearish — 277.81; $60.8M 295 put and $29.2M 300 put, TRO ✅, watch 268 support.
  • AMZN — bearish — 254.10; $3.72M 258 Oct-16 put plus 444x fresh 260 line.
  • ORCL — long reversal — 135.45; $12.49M 145 Oct-30 call needs a reclaim toward 145.
  • META — long — 720.98; TRO ✅ 149x V/OI near-dated calls, holds above 718.
  • GS — bearish — 881.95; $13.5M 1005 put, TRO ✅, trend is -18.57% over 57 days.

Total unusual put notional: $199.2M across 10 sectors. Sectors with 🔴 Defensive signal have BOTH high PCR (>1.2) AND >$2M of unusual put buying — institutions are actively hedging there. 🟢 Risk-On means call-heavy with no defensive flow — the safest put-selling ground.

How to read the Sector Tape

The sector tape aggregates the daily option chain by GICS sector. For each sector it computes the put/call ratio (PCR) and the total notional of unusual put prints (contracts where today's volume exceeds existing open interest by 50%+). The signal tells you where institutions are positioning defensively vs. where they're comfortable being long.

  • PCR (put/call ratio) — put volume ÷ call volume (or OI). Above 1.0 = puts trade more than calls (defensive). Below 0.8 = call-heavy (risk-on). The OI version is more stable; the volume version is more reactive to today's flow.
  • UnusualPut$ — total notional ($ = volume × mid × 100) of put contracts where volume > 1.5× open interest AND notional > $50K. This is the UnusualWhales signal: new positions opening rather than existing ones trading hands. Large values = someone is paying up for protection.
  • Signal — derived from PCR + unusual notional. 🔴 Defensive (PCR > 1.2 AND > $2M unusual) = heavy hedging — be cautious selling puts there. 🟡 Caution = some defensive flow. 🟢 Risk-On (PCR < 0.9, < $500K unusual) = calmest put-selling ground. ⚪ Neutral = mixed.

How to use it with ChainScan

The sector tape is the weather report above the single-name scanner. A bull-put-spread TAKE verdict on a name in a 🟢 Risk-On sector is high confidence — the tape confirms nobody's hedging there. A TAKE verdict on a name in a 🔴 Defensive sector should be downgraded: institutions are actively buying puts at the strikes you'd be selling, so either skip the trade, go further OTM (0.15 delta instead of 0.20), or shorten DTE to get ahead of the hedging flow. The ETF block (SPY/QQQ/IWM) gives the macro read — if QQQ is 🔴 Defensive, every tech name on the ChainScan table carries extra risk.

The top-prints table

Shows the 15 largest unusual put prints across all sectors, sorted by notional. This is where you see the actual whale activity: which symbol, which strike, which expiration, and how much money is behind it. A single $50M put print could be one institution hedging a long book (not necessarily bearish) or a fresh directional bet. When you see clusters across multiple strikes and names in the same sector, the institutional interpretation gets stronger.

🎯 Smart Money — directional-bet detection (both sides)

Two tables surface institutional directional bets. 🐻 Bearish bets (unusual put activity): names where put buying looks like a coordinated bear bet. 🐂 Bullish bets (unusual call activity): names where call buying looks like a coordinated bull bet. The conviction score separates directional bets from dispersed hedging using three features: (1) V/OI breadth — fraction of notional in contracts with V/OI > 20×, discounted by sample size; (2) strike concentration — fraction of notional in the dominant strike cluster (within 2% of spot); (3) notional scale — saturates at $5M. Score ≥70 = strong directional bet, ≥50 = moderate, ≥30 = some clustering.

The TRO columns (D/W/M) show the trend on daily/weekly/monthly timeframes. ✅ TRO Confirmed: for bearish bets, daily AND weekly both ▼ (downtrend); for bullish bets, daily AND weekly both ▲ (uptrend). The highest-conviction signals are bets in the direction TRO already confirms. A high score with TRO NOT confirmed means the option market may be ahead of the trend indicator — an early warning.

Example (bearish): LLY on 2026-07-29 had $27.7M unusual puts, V/OI up to 284×, concentrated in 5 strikes within $20 of spot, placed at the top of a 5-day rally. TRO daily red since July 15. LLY fell 4% the next day. Example (bullish): AMD on 2026-07-29 had $28M unusual calls at the bottom of a 22% crash week ($543→$425). The calls were concentrated in Aug 7 expiry (through earnings Aug 4). AMD bounced +15% the next day on a Microsoft-led chip rebound and a $14B Core Scientific deal. Both sides of the tape are predictive.

Caveat: open interest lags one day (reported from the previous close). Volume can be driven by a single large order as easily as by distributed flow. Hedging is not the same as bearish — a put buyer may be insuring a long position, not speculating. Use the tape as a confirming colour on top of technical analysis, not as a standalone forecast.
