Daily Tape Analysis — 2026-10-02
The Story
The tape rallied across the board on 10/02: SPY +0.74% to 769.72, QQQ +0.96% to 749.20, IWM +0.82% to 281.58, with semis leading (AMD +2.92%, AVGO +3.29%, TXN +4.44%, CSCO +3.17%). Yesterday's bullish call bets mostly paid — SPY, QQQ, C, GS, AAPL, and IWM all rose — while yesterday's bearish put bets mostly failed, with only LLY (-0.62%) and ACN (-6.32%) falling. The one big shift is that heavy index put buying landed *into* the rally: $48.6M on SPY (19,571x V/OI on the 769 strike), $55.7M on IWM, and $68.4M on QQQ. That is hedging, not directional conviction. Single-name bear flow is thin — only IWM and TSLA carry both size and TRO confirmation.
Bearish Bets to Watch
IWM (score 64, TRO ✅) — index put ladder. $55.7M across 34 contracts, anchored by the 269 Nov20 put ($14.7M at 44.6x V/OI) and 277 Oct23 ($9.2M at 34.8x), both below spot 281.58. Spot rose +0.82% yesterday, so the bet was wrong on day one, yet put flow held at $55.7M.
SPY (score 63) — one 19,571x block dominates. The 769 Oct14 put moved $10.4M against OI of 1 contract, plus $6.3M on the 733 Nov20 put (10.9x). Spot closed 769.72, right on the big strike — protection against the index, not a top call.
QQQ (score 55) — $68.4M across 133 contracts, 30 with V/OI above 20x. The 750 strike is the hub: $10.4M on Oct16 and $5.4M on Oct30, both within 0.1% of spot 749.20. Large size but at-the-money, consistent with overwrites/hedges.
TSLA (score 50, TRO ✅) — $40.8M puts, 144x V/OI, anchored by the 370 Oct16 put ($15.9M). Spot jumped +4.61% to 370.53, closing essentially on the strike — put buyers are defending 370 rather than fading the rally.
META (score 54) — small but concentrated: $1.4M with 730 Oct14 puts ($0.79M at 33.9x) against spot 728.09. Fading the +0.33% bounce below the recent 777.73 high.
Bullish Bets to Watch
LLY (score 57, TRO ✅) — $3.9M calls led by the 1145 Nov6 call ($1.84M at 155x V/OI). Spot 1143.54, down 0.62% — the only bearish bet that worked yesterday, yet calls now dominate.
ACN (score 53, TRO ✅) — $6.1M calls dip-buying the pullback. The 205 Oct16 call ($3.06M at 21.7x) and 225 Nov20 ($2.18M at 13.9x) were bought after spot fell 6.32% to 198.97, following the Oct1 +15.84% spike.
C (score 48) — $1.5M calls with an extreme 549x V/OI on the 133 Nov6 call ($0.16M), plus $0.89M on 134 Oct16 (39.7x). Spot +1.20% to 128.53; yesterday's C call was correct.
NVDA (score 41, TRO ✅) — $16.2M calls vs $31.7M puts: two-sided but TRO-confirmed bull. The 232 Oct16 call moved $6.7M; spot +1.28% to 234.00, above the 238/235 put cluster.
INTC (score 40, TRO ✅) — $5.4M calls, headlined by the 130 Oct30 call ($3.9M, 8.8% OTM). Spot 119.50, down 0.42%; bull flow is TRO-confirmed against a down day.
The Oracle Read
The strongest signal is the index put ladder (SPY 19,571x block, IWM 44.6x) arriving into a broad rally — protective flow that has preceded chop more often than a clean top. Single-name bear conviction is weak, while bulls hold TRO confirmation in LLY, ACN, NVDA, INTC, MSFT, and AMD. Net read: semis keep the upside (AMD, AVGO, TXN, NVDA all up 1.3–4.4% with TRO-confirmed call flow), with SPY/IWM puts acting as insurance, not direction.
Names to Watch at the Open
- IWM — downside — 269/277 put wall ($14.7M + $9.2M); watch a break below 279, spot 281.58.
- TSLA — two-sided — 370 is the battleground: $15.9M Oct16 put vs $4.3M 375 call; spot 370.53.
- NVDA — upside — TRO ✅ bull, 232 Oct16 calls $6.7M; spot 234.00 above the 238 put cluster.
- ACN — bounce — 205 Oct16 calls $3.1M need a reclaim of 205 after -6.32%; spot 198.97.
- LLY — upside — 1145 Nov6 calls $1.84M at 155x; spot 1143.54.

Total unusual put notional: $120.4M across 10 sectors. Sectors with 🔴 Defensive signal have BOTH high PCR (>1.2) AND >$2M of unusual put buying — institutions are actively hedging there. 🟢 Risk-On means call-heavy with no defensive flow — the safest put-selling ground.
How to read the Sector Tape
The sector tape aggregates the daily option chain by GICS sector. For each sector it computes the put/call ratio (PCR) and the total notional of unusual put prints (contracts where today's volume exceeds existing open interest by 50%+). The signal tells you where institutions are positioning defensively vs. where they're comfortable being long.
- PCR (put/call ratio) — put volume ÷ call volume (or OI). Above 1.0 = puts trade more than calls (defensive). Below 0.8 = call-heavy (risk-on). The OI version is more stable; the volume version is more reactive to today's flow.
- UnusualPut$ — total notional ($ = volume × mid × 100) of put contracts where volume > 1.5× open interest AND notional > $50K. This is the UnusualWhales signal: new positions opening rather than existing ones trading hands. Large values = someone is paying up for protection.
- Signal — derived from PCR + unusual notional. 🔴 Defensive (PCR > 1.2 AND > $2M unusual) = heavy hedging — be cautious selling puts there. 🟡 Caution = some defensive flow. 🟢 Risk-On (PCR < 0.9, < $500K unusual) = calmest put-selling ground. ⚪ Neutral = mixed.
How to use it with ChainScan
The sector tape is the weather report above the single-name scanner. A bull-put-spread TAKE verdict on a name in a 🟢 Risk-On sector is high confidence — the tape confirms nobody's hedging there. A TAKE verdict on a name in a 🔴 Defensive sector should be downgraded: institutions are actively buying puts at the strikes you'd be selling, so either skip the trade, go further OTM (0.15 delta instead of 0.20), or shorten DTE to get ahead of the hedging flow. The ETF block (SPY/QQQ/IWM) gives the macro read — if QQQ is 🔴 Defensive, every tech name on the ChainScan table carries extra risk.
The top-prints table
Shows the 15 largest unusual put prints across all sectors, sorted by notional. This is where you see the actual whale activity: which symbol, which strike, which expiration, and how much money is behind it. A single $50M put print could be one institution hedging a long book (not necessarily bearish) or a fresh directional bet. When you see clusters across multiple strikes and names in the same sector, the institutional interpretation gets stronger.
🎯 Smart Money — directional-bet detection (both sides)
Two tables surface institutional directional bets. 🐻 Bearish bets (unusual put activity): names where put buying looks like a coordinated bear bet. 🐂 Bullish bets (unusual call activity): names where call buying looks like a coordinated bull bet. The conviction score separates directional bets from dispersed hedging using three features: (1) V/OI breadth — fraction of notional in contracts with V/OI > 20×, discounted by sample size; (2) strike concentration — fraction of notional in the dominant strike cluster (within 2% of spot); (3) notional scale — saturates at $5M. Score ≥70 = strong directional bet, ≥50 = moderate, ≥30 = some clustering.
The TRO columns (D/W/M) show the trend on daily/weekly/monthly timeframes. ✅ TRO Confirmed: for bearish bets, daily AND weekly both ▼ (downtrend); for bullish bets, daily AND weekly both ▲ (uptrend). The highest-conviction signals are bets in the direction TRO already confirms. A high score with TRO NOT confirmed means the option market may be ahead of the trend indicator — an early warning.
Example (bearish): LLY on 2026-07-29 had $27.7M unusual puts, V/OI up to 284×, concentrated in 5 strikes within $20 of spot, placed at the top of a 5-day rally. TRO daily red since July 15. LLY fell 4% the next day. Example (bullish): AMD on 2026-07-29 had $28M unusual calls at the bottom of a 22% crash week ($543→$425). The calls were concentrated in Aug 7 expiry (through earnings Aug 4). AMD bounced +15% the next day on a Microsoft-led chip rebound and a $14B Core Scientific deal. Both sides of the tape are predictive.
Caveat: open interest lags one day (reported from the previous close). Volume can be driven by a single large order as easily as by distributed flow. Hedging is not the same as bearish — a put buyer may be insuring a long position, not speculating. Use the tape as a confirming colour on top of technical analysis, not as a standalone forecast.
