Daily Tape Analysis — 2026-09-21
The Story
Broad risk-on day: SPY +1.39% to 773.21, QQQ +2.55% to 740.72, led by the AI/semi complex — AMD +10.45%, INTC +11.62%, META +11.18%, QCOM +9.09%. Yesterday's validation was a clean sweep: all 10 bearish conviction bets lost and all 10 bullish bets won. Total unusual put notional jumped to $301.0M, but it is concentrated in QQQ ($174.0M) and SPY ($93.7M) index hedges bought into strength, not fresh directional breakdowns. The one big shift is the collision in META: $376.8M of calls against $136.1M of puts in a single name that just printed +11.18%.
Bearish Bets to Watch
QQQ (score 57) — $174.0M unusual puts across 173 contracts (58 above 20x V/OI), the biggest bearish line on the board. $13.0M at the 730 strike (Sep 30), plus $12.9M and $10.0M layered at 725 for Oct 16/Oct 2; all strikes sit 0–3.5% below spot $740.72. No TRO confirmation, and QQQ calls also printed $192.3M — this reads as hedging the +2.55% pop rather than a top call.
TSLA (score 51) — $26.3M puts, 4 strikes clustered at the money. The 375 strike is the anchor: $5.7M Oct 2 (11.2x V/OI), $1.5M Oct 23, $1.3M Oct 30 (28.5x), $1.2M Oct 9. No TRO; yesterday's TSLA puts were wrong (+2.99%), and spot +2.99% again today — a fade attempt into strength.
SPY (score 49) — $93.7M puts across 93 contracts, PCR_v 1.32. Biggest line $10.1M at 767 (Oct 9, 0.8% OTM), then $8.6M at 729 and $8.6M at 734 (Oct 16, 5–6% OTM). Defensive collar-style hedging after the index tagged 773.21; no TRO.
META (score 47) — $136.1M puts, 647x max V/OI, in a name up +11.18% on the day. Single $13.1M print at 680 (Oct 30, 8.3% OTM) plus $9.3M at 660 (Dec 18). No TRO; yesterday's META puts were badly wrong (+11.18%), and today's put surge is the other side of a $376.8M call book.
INTC (score 46) — $15.4M puts, 883x max V/OI, fading an +11.62% single-day move off a 37.8% 44-day range. No TRO; the 883x ratio says one trader is paying up to bet the pop reverses.
Bullish Bets to Watch
IWM (score 59) — $6.0M calls, 545x V/OI, 6 strikes, the highest-scored bullish name. Small-cap catch-up bet; spot +0.51% to 285.55 after a 44-day drift from 296.14. Mixed read — PCR_v 2.72 is defensive, but the call cluster is a rotation wager.
SPY (score 58, TRO ✅) — $132.8M calls across 15 strikes. $31.3M at 670 (Sep 30, deep ITM, 143.6x V/OI) and $23.5M at 785 (Oct 9). Yesterday's SPY calls (score 65, $86.8M) were right (+1.39%); momentum confirmed.
BKNG (score 45) — $74.0M in calls on just 3 contracts, nearly all of it one $73.4M print at the 150 strike (Dec 18, deep ITM, 65.3x V/OI). Spot is only $168.53, so this is a position in size, not a price bet. No TRO.
AMD (score 43, TRO ✅) — $107.9M calls, 141x V/OI, chasing a +10.45% day to $615.53 (up 13.36% over 44 days). $23.0M at 630 (Dec 18, 2.3% OTM) is the anchor. Yesterday's AMD calls were right (+10.45%) and the flow is doubling down.
GOOGL (score 51) — $16.0M calls, 23x V/OI, anchored at the 355 ATM strike ($7.0M Oct 9). Spot +1.75% to 355.35; yesterday's GOOGL calls were right (+1.75%). No TRO.
The Oracle Read
The tape is hedging a rally, not shorting a breakdown — the $301.0M put surge sits on names that just ripped (AMD, META, INTC) and index ETFs at or near 44-day highs. The strongest setups are the TRO-confirmed momentum longs: SPY calls and AMD calls, both of which validated yesterday. META is the cleanest two-sided signal on the board — $376.8M calls vs $136.1M puts in a stock up 11.18% — and says a big single-day move is still being priced, not settled.
Names to Watch at the Open
- QQQ — watch 740; $174M of puts hedged the +2.55% pop, first real resistance test since the July breakout.
- META — two-sided: $136.1M puts at 680 vs $376.8M calls after +11.18%.
- AMD — continuation, $107.9M calls chasing +10.45% toward 630 Dec.
- BKNG — $73.4M deep-ITM call at 150 Dec is the day's single largest print.
- INTC — fade risk; $15.4M puts at 883x V/OI against an +11.62% move.

Total unusual put notional: $301.0M across 10 sectors. Sectors with 🔴 Defensive signal have BOTH high PCR (>1.2) AND >$2M of unusual put buying — institutions are actively hedging there. 🟢 Risk-On means call-heavy with no defensive flow — the safest put-selling ground.
How to read the Sector Tape
The sector tape aggregates the daily option chain by GICS sector. For each sector it computes the put/call ratio (PCR) and the total notional of unusual put prints (contracts where today's volume exceeds existing open interest by 50%+). The signal tells you where institutions are positioning defensively vs. where they're comfortable being long.
- PCR (put/call ratio) — put volume ÷ call volume (or OI). Above 1.0 = puts trade more than calls (defensive). Below 0.8 = call-heavy (risk-on). The OI version is more stable; the volume version is more reactive to today's flow.
- UnusualPut$ — total notional ($ = volume × mid × 100) of put contracts where volume > 1.5× open interest AND notional > $50K. This is the UnusualWhales signal: new positions opening rather than existing ones trading hands. Large values = someone is paying up for protection.
- Signal — derived from PCR + unusual notional. 🔴 Defensive (PCR > 1.2 AND > $2M unusual) = heavy hedging — be cautious selling puts there. 🟡 Caution = some defensive flow. 🟢 Risk-On (PCR < 0.9, < $500K unusual) = calmest put-selling ground. ⚪ Neutral = mixed.
How to use it with ChainScan
The sector tape is the weather report above the single-name scanner. A bull-put-spread TAKE verdict on a name in a 🟢 Risk-On sector is high confidence — the tape confirms nobody's hedging there. A TAKE verdict on a name in a 🔴 Defensive sector should be downgraded: institutions are actively buying puts at the strikes you'd be selling, so either skip the trade, go further OTM (0.15 delta instead of 0.20), or shorten DTE to get ahead of the hedging flow. The ETF block (SPY/QQQ/IWM) gives the macro read — if QQQ is 🔴 Defensive, every tech name on the ChainScan table carries extra risk.
The top-prints table
Shows the 15 largest unusual put prints across all sectors, sorted by notional. This is where you see the actual whale activity: which symbol, which strike, which expiration, and how much money is behind it. A single $50M put print could be one institution hedging a long book (not necessarily bearish) or a fresh directional bet. When you see clusters across multiple strikes and names in the same sector, the institutional interpretation gets stronger.
🎯 Smart Money — directional-bet detection (both sides)
Two tables surface institutional directional bets. 🐻 Bearish bets (unusual put activity): names where put buying looks like a coordinated bear bet. 🐂 Bullish bets (unusual call activity): names where call buying looks like a coordinated bull bet. The conviction score separates directional bets from dispersed hedging using three features: (1) V/OI breadth — fraction of notional in contracts with V/OI > 20×, discounted by sample size; (2) strike concentration — fraction of notional in the dominant strike cluster (within 2% of spot); (3) notional scale — saturates at $5M. Score ≥70 = strong directional bet, ≥50 = moderate, ≥30 = some clustering.
The TRO columns (D/W/M) show the trend on daily/weekly/monthly timeframes. ✅ TRO Confirmed: for bearish bets, daily AND weekly both ▼ (downtrend); for bullish bets, daily AND weekly both ▲ (uptrend). The highest-conviction signals are bets in the direction TRO already confirms. A high score with TRO NOT confirmed means the option market may be ahead of the trend indicator — an early warning.
Example (bearish): LLY on 2026-07-29 had $27.7M unusual puts, V/OI up to 284×, concentrated in 5 strikes within $20 of spot, placed at the top of a 5-day rally. TRO daily red since July 15. LLY fell 4% the next day. Example (bullish): AMD on 2026-07-29 had $28M unusual calls at the bottom of a 22% crash week ($543→$425). The calls were concentrated in Aug 7 expiry (through earnings Aug 4). AMD bounced +15% the next day on a Microsoft-led chip rebound and a $14B Core Scientific deal. Both sides of the tape are predictive.
Caveat: open interest lags one day (reported from the previous close). Volume can be driven by a single large order as easily as by distributed flow. Hedging is not the same as bearish — a put buyer may be insuring a long position, not speculating. Use the tape as a confirming colour on top of technical analysis, not as a standalone forecast.
