Daily Tape Analysis — 2026-09-17

The Story

Broad rally: SPY +1.12% to 762.51, QQQ +1.59% to 716.34, led by semis — AMD +6.26%, INTC +8.07%, SMCI +9.51%. Yesterday's bearish conviction bets mostly failed (QQQ, SPY, AAPL, AMD, TSLA puts all wrong); only T (-1.95%) and BA (-2.46%) paid. Yesterday's bullish bets were right across the board: AMD, INTC, TSLA, GS, ADBE, QQQ, SPY. Today's shift is defensive put flow under a rallying tape — $62.9M SPY, $40.8M QQQ, $17.0M IWM in unusual puts — hedging rather than chasing. Telecom broke hardest: TMUS -5.53%, CMCSA -3.47%, VZ -2.92%, T -1.95%.

Bearish Bets to Watch

T (score 64) — telecom breakdown continuation. $4.3M puts, max 322x V/OI; the 29 strike Oct 9 did 288.5x V/OI on $1.09M and the 28 Oct 9 did 112.6x on $2.71M. Down from $7.0M yesterday, and yesterday's T put bet was right (-1.95%) — no TRO confirmation yet.

IWM (score 58) — small-cap fade. $17.0M puts with the largest single print: 273 Oct 16, 80,103 contracts, $14.74M, 4.3% OTM. IWM closed +0.49% today and yesterday's put bet was flat, so this is positioning, not confirmation; PCR 3.41 is the most defensive index read on the board.

QQQ (score 56) — hedge into the rally. $40.8M puts across 13 strikes, max 446x V/OI; 715 Sep 25 carries $5.85M. Yesterday's QQQ put bet was wrong (+1.59%), but $56.7M in calls on the other side makes this a two-way book, not a clean short.

TSLA (score 51) — pop fade. $43.2M puts, max 408x V/OI; 370 Oct 16 holds $10.83M at 1.7x, 365 Sep 25 $5.78M at 4.9x. TSLA +2.20% today; yesterday's put bet was wrong and the call bet was right, so today's puts are a top-side bet.

INTC / AMD (scores 49 / 49) — fade the semi spike. INTC $13.7M puts with a 1074x V/OI print at 109 Oct 9; AMD $45.9M puts, max 252x, with 540 Oct 16 at $6.3M. Both ripped (INTC +8.07%, AMD +6.26%) and both have large call prints on the other side — INTC $56.7M calls, AMD 600 Oct 16 $8.3M — so treat as two-way chop, not direction.

Bullish Bets to Watch

COST (score 63) — rebound at range low. $5.0M calls, max 96x V/OI; 900 Oct 23 did 6.8x on $1.79M. COST is flat (-0.02%) but down -4.01% over 42 days and sitting at the bottom of its range — no TRO confirmation.

CAT (score 59) — momentum continuation. $2.7M calls, max 69x V/OI; 825 Oct 2 at 28.5x ($0.65M) and 770 Sep 25 at 69x ($0.51M). CAT +1.97% today, but the put side carries a TRO ✅ ($3.9M), so conviction is split.

AAPL (score 46) — TRO-confirmed upside. $31.8M calls, max 172x V/OI; the 330 Oct 9 call did 7.8x on $13.2M. +1.38% today and TRO ✅ on the call side — one of the few names where the system and the flow agree.

GOOGL (score 51) — momentum into earnings cycle. $13.3M calls, max 41x V/OI; 350 Sep 25 carries $3.42M and 358 Sep 25 did 40.8x on $1.25M. +1.30% today after a 42-day round trip back to flat.

AVGO (score 49) — two-way, call-heavy. $12.2M calls, max 526x V/OI; 350 Oct 9 holds $6.28M at 11.1x and 365 Sep 30 did 525.5x. +2.32% today, but the put side also shows a TRO ✅ ($1.2M) — bullish size, split signal.

The Oracle Read

The tape is two-way: defensive index puts underneath a rallying tape, so the clearest directional edge is the one that already paid — T downside on the telecom break. The semi pop (AMD +6.26%, INTC +8.07%) is drawing call chasers and put faders simultaneously; expect chop around INTC 120 and AMD 600. TRO-confirmed names lean to calls (AAPL, MSFT, CRM, META, C), which supports continued bid but not the index hedgers' conviction.

Names to Watch at the Open

  • T — short side, 25.39; largest put flow at 29/28 Oct 9, telecom sector breaking.
  • AMD — two-way, 544.86; 540/550 puts vs 600 Oct 16 calls.
  • INTC — two-way, 109.33; $9.2M 120 calls vs 1074x put at 109.
  • AAPL — long side, 337.09; TRO-confirmed, 330 Oct 9 $13.2M call print.
  • IWM — defensive, 285.33; $14.74M 273 Oct 16 puts 4.3% OTM.

Total unusual put notional: $177.2M across 10 sectors. Sectors with 🔴 Defensive signal have BOTH high PCR (>1.2) AND >$2M of unusual put buying — institutions are actively hedging there. 🟢 Risk-On means call-heavy with no defensive flow — the safest put-selling ground.

How to read the Sector Tape

The sector tape aggregates the daily option chain by GICS sector. For each sector it computes the put/call ratio (PCR) and the total notional of unusual put prints (contracts where today's volume exceeds existing open interest by 50%+). The signal tells you where institutions are positioning defensively vs. where they're comfortable being long.

  • PCR (put/call ratio) — put volume ÷ call volume (or OI). Above 1.0 = puts trade more than calls (defensive). Below 0.8 = call-heavy (risk-on). The OI version is more stable; the volume version is more reactive to today's flow.
  • UnusualPut$ — total notional ($ = volume × mid × 100) of put contracts where volume > 1.5× open interest AND notional > $50K. This is the UnusualWhales signal: new positions opening rather than existing ones trading hands. Large values = someone is paying up for protection.
  • Signal — derived from PCR + unusual notional. 🔴 Defensive (PCR > 1.2 AND > $2M unusual) = heavy hedging — be cautious selling puts there. 🟡 Caution = some defensive flow. 🟢 Risk-On (PCR < 0.9, < $500K unusual) = calmest put-selling ground. ⚪ Neutral = mixed.

How to use it with ChainScan

The sector tape is the weather report above the single-name scanner. A bull-put-spread TAKE verdict on a name in a 🟢 Risk-On sector is high confidence — the tape confirms nobody's hedging there. A TAKE verdict on a name in a 🔴 Defensive sector should be downgraded: institutions are actively buying puts at the strikes you'd be selling, so either skip the trade, go further OTM (0.15 delta instead of 0.20), or shorten DTE to get ahead of the hedging flow. The ETF block (SPY/QQQ/IWM) gives the macro read — if QQQ is 🔴 Defensive, every tech name on the ChainScan table carries extra risk.

The top-prints table

Shows the 15 largest unusual put prints across all sectors, sorted by notional. This is where you see the actual whale activity: which symbol, which strike, which expiration, and how much money is behind it. A single $50M put print could be one institution hedging a long book (not necessarily bearish) or a fresh directional bet. When you see clusters across multiple strikes and names in the same sector, the institutional interpretation gets stronger.

🎯 Smart Money — directional-bet detection (both sides)

Two tables surface institutional directional bets. 🐻 Bearish bets (unusual put activity): names where put buying looks like a coordinated bear bet. 🐂 Bullish bets (unusual call activity): names where call buying looks like a coordinated bull bet. The conviction score separates directional bets from dispersed hedging using three features: (1) V/OI breadth — fraction of notional in contracts with V/OI > 20×, discounted by sample size; (2) strike concentration — fraction of notional in the dominant strike cluster (within 2% of spot); (3) notional scale — saturates at $5M. Score ≥70 = strong directional bet, ≥50 = moderate, ≥30 = some clustering.

The TRO columns (D/W/M) show the trend on daily/weekly/monthly timeframes. ✅ TRO Confirmed: for bearish bets, daily AND weekly both ▼ (downtrend); for bullish bets, daily AND weekly both ▲ (uptrend). The highest-conviction signals are bets in the direction TRO already confirms. A high score with TRO NOT confirmed means the option market may be ahead of the trend indicator — an early warning.

Example (bearish): LLY on 2026-07-29 had $27.7M unusual puts, V/OI up to 284×, concentrated in 5 strikes within $20 of spot, placed at the top of a 5-day rally. TRO daily red since July 15. LLY fell 4% the next day. Example (bullish): AMD on 2026-07-29 had $28M unusual calls at the bottom of a 22% crash week ($543→$425). The calls were concentrated in Aug 7 expiry (through earnings Aug 4). AMD bounced +15% the next day on a Microsoft-led chip rebound and a $14B Core Scientific deal. Both sides of the tape are predictive.

Caveat: open interest lags one day (reported from the previous close). Volume can be driven by a single large order as easily as by distributed flow. Hedging is not the same as bearish — a put buyer may be insuring a long position, not speculating. Use the tape as a confirming colour on top of technical analysis, not as a standalone forecast.
