Daily Tape Analysis — 2026-09-30
The Story
Mega-cap tech and semis bounced (INTC +3.40%, GOOG +2.57%, AMD +0.75%) while defensives and cyclicals sold off (GM -4.30%, WMT -2.70%, LLY -2.16%). Yesterday's bullish semis bets paid — AAPL, INTC, NVDA, and AMD all closed green — while yesterday's bearish bets on those same names (NVDA, AMD, AAPL, GOOGL) failed. The big shift is on the downside: put buyers paid up for broad index protection (SPY $89.3M, QQQ $98.9M, IWM $43.3M) and dropped a single $100.9M AMGN put. Health Care led unusual put flow at $120.2M, but that number is almost entirely that one AMGN trade. LLY carried the day's top conviction (score 80) with its largest put cluster since late August.
Bearish Bets to Watch
LLY (score 80) — $15.0M in unusual puts at 168x max V/OI across 5 strikes, centered on the 1200–1210 strikes for Oct 30 and Nov 6, 3.5–4.4% below spot $1159.47. The 1210 Oct 30 put alone printed 168x V/OI. No TRO confirmation, but this is the stock's biggest daily put notional since Aug 27 and it fell -2.16% today.
AMGN (score 33) — a single $100.9M put at the 460 strike (Oct 16), 6.3x V/OI, with strike above spot $421.69. It is the day's largest print and roughly equals the next nine largest put prints combined. One strike keeps its conviction score low, but the dollar size is the day's clearest bearish statement.
Index ETFs (SPY/QQQ/IWM) — grouped: all three show unusual put flow with defensive readings (QQQ PCR_v 1.28, IWM 2.25). SPY's standout is the 729 Nov 20 put, $12.0M at 93.7x V/OI, 4.5% below spot $763.61; IWM adds 272 Oct 30 ($10.1M) and 299 Oct 16 ($10.1M) puts. Same downside-tilted hedging appears on the SPY and QQQ put ladders, not one crowded strike.
MSFT (score 57) — $14.3M in puts at 134x max V/OI, with the 495 and 485 Nov 6 strikes ($3.33M at 89.6x and $2.56M at 133.8x) betting on a fall back toward $490. Note the two-sided flow: $16.4M in calls on the other side. No TRO confirmation on the put side.
AAPL (score 47) — $5.3M in puts across 13 contracts, biggest line the 335 Oct 9 put at $2.03M. Yesterday's bearish AAPL bet was wrong (+1.05%), yet the put flow returned today. No TRO confirmation.
Bullish Bets to Watch
WMT (score 64) — $1.7M in calls at 97x max V/OI, led by the 106 Oct 16 call at $0.65M and 96.7x V/OI. This is a contrarian dip-buy: WMT fell -2.70% today and yesterday's bullish WMT bet failed. The put side carries TRO confirmation, so this is a bottom-fisher against a confirmed downtrend.
MSFT (score 63) — $16.4M in calls at 80x V/OI with TRO confirmation, headlined by the 555 Oct 30 call at $9.9M and 35.3x V/OI, 8.2% above spot $512.91. Stock is +28.62% over 52 days and +0.78% today, so the call side has momentum behind it — but the 495/485 puts show some buyers fading the run.
TSLA (score 59) — $60.7M in calls at 90x V/OI, the largest single-name call flow of the day, clustered at 350–355 across Oct 9, Oct 30, and Nov 6. Spot $354.09, -6.85% over 52 days. No TRO confirmation on the call side; the put side carries TRO confirmation, so this call surge runs against a confirmed downtrend.
SPY/QQQ (grouped) — index calls with TRO confirmation: SPY $91.4M (770 Dec 18 call at $54.1M) and QQQ $35.3M. The call ladders sit just above spot (0.0–1.9% OTM), so this reads as upside positioning layered against the $89.3M/$98.9M of put hedging — both sides are being bought.
NVDA (score 32) — $53.2M in calls with TRO confirmation, almost entirely the 245 Nov 20 call at $49.2M and 3.7x V/OI, 7.0% above spot $228.96. Yesterday's bullish NVDA bet was right (+0.76%), and today's $53.2M is the second-largest call notional on the tape.
The Oracle Read
The tape is split: fresh single-name put conviction (LLY, the AMGN print) sits next to renewed call buying in semis and megacap tech that is already working. The clearest directional signal is downside — SPY 729/726 and QQQ 730/715 puts are explicit bets on a 4–5% pullback, and the index put notional roughly matches the call side. Strongest setups are LLY downside (score 80) and NVDA/MSFT upside (both TRO-confirmed).

Total unusual put notional: $218.7M across 10 sectors. Sectors with 🔴 Defensive signal have BOTH high PCR (>1.2) AND >$2M of unusual put buying — institutions are actively hedging there. 🟢 Risk-On means call-heavy with no defensive flow — the safest put-selling ground.
How to read the Sector Tape
The sector tape aggregates the daily option chain by GICS sector. For each sector it computes the put/call ratio (PCR) and the total notional of unusual put prints (contracts where today's volume exceeds existing open interest by 50%+). The signal tells you where institutions are positioning defensively vs. where they're comfortable being long.
- PCR (put/call ratio) — put volume ÷ call volume (or OI). Above 1.0 = puts trade more than calls (defensive). Below 0.8 = call-heavy (risk-on). The OI version is more stable; the volume version is more reactive to today's flow.
- UnusualPut$ — total notional ($ = volume × mid × 100) of put contracts where volume > 1.5× open interest AND notional > $50K. This is the UnusualWhales signal: new positions opening rather than existing ones trading hands. Large values = someone is paying up for protection.
- Signal — derived from PCR + unusual notional. 🔴 Defensive (PCR > 1.2 AND > $2M unusual) = heavy hedging — be cautious selling puts there. 🟡 Caution = some defensive flow. 🟢 Risk-On (PCR < 0.9, < $500K unusual) = calmest put-selling ground. ⚪ Neutral = mixed.
How to use it with ChainScan
The sector tape is the weather report above the single-name scanner. A bull-put-spread TAKE verdict on a name in a 🟢 Risk-On sector is high confidence — the tape confirms nobody's hedging there. A TAKE verdict on a name in a 🔴 Defensive sector should be downgraded: institutions are actively buying puts at the strikes you'd be selling, so either skip the trade, go further OTM (0.15 delta instead of 0.20), or shorten DTE to get ahead of the hedging flow. The ETF block (SPY/QQQ/IWM) gives the macro read — if QQQ is 🔴 Defensive, every tech name on the ChainScan table carries extra risk.
The top-prints table
Shows the 15 largest unusual put prints across all sectors, sorted by notional. This is where you see the actual whale activity: which symbol, which strike, which expiration, and how much money is behind it. A single $50M put print could be one institution hedging a long book (not necessarily bearish) or a fresh directional bet. When you see clusters across multiple strikes and names in the same sector, the institutional interpretation gets stronger.
🎯 Smart Money — directional-bet detection (both sides)
Two tables surface institutional directional bets. 🐻 Bearish bets (unusual put activity): names where put buying looks like a coordinated bear bet. 🐂 Bullish bets (unusual call activity): names where call buying looks like a coordinated bull bet. The conviction score separates directional bets from dispersed hedging using three features: (1) V/OI breadth — fraction of notional in contracts with V/OI > 20×, discounted by sample size; (2) strike concentration — fraction of notional in the dominant strike cluster (within 2% of spot); (3) notional scale — saturates at $5M. Score ≥70 = strong directional bet, ≥50 = moderate, ≥30 = some clustering.
The TRO columns (D/W/M) show the trend on daily/weekly/monthly timeframes. ✅ TRO Confirmed: for bearish bets, daily AND weekly both ▼ (downtrend); for bullish bets, daily AND weekly both ▲ (uptrend). The highest-conviction signals are bets in the direction TRO already confirms. A high score with TRO NOT confirmed means the option market may be ahead of the trend indicator — an early warning.
Example (bearish): LLY on 2026-07-29 had $27.7M unusual puts, V/OI up to 284×, concentrated in 5 strikes within $20 of spot, placed at the top of a 5-day rally. TRO daily red since July 15. LLY fell 4% the next day. Example (bullish): AMD on 2026-07-29 had $28M unusual calls at the bottom of a 22% crash week ($543→$425). The calls were concentrated in Aug 7 expiry (through earnings Aug 4). AMD bounced +15% the next day on a Microsoft-led chip rebound and a $14B Core Scientific deal. Both sides of the tape are predictive.
Caveat: open interest lags one day (reported from the previous close). Volume can be driven by a single large order as easily as by distributed flow. Hedging is not the same as bearish — a put buyer may be insuring a long position, not speculating. Use the tape as a confirming colour on top of technical analysis, not as a standalone forecast.
