Daily Tape Analysis — 2026-09-29

The Story

Equities chopped sideways — SPY -0.12%, QQQ +0.33% — but the tape went defensive: $228.0M in unusual put notional, led by $88.6M on SPY, $31.7M on IWM, and $29.6M on QQQ, all three index ETFs with PCRs above 1. Yesterday's bearish bets paid on TSLA (-1.24%), AAPL (-2.61%), and NVDA (-0.72%), but the $109.1M AMGN put was wrong (+1.23%). The big shift is META: unusual put flow jumped from $15.8M to $63.2M (score 88) even as the stock bounced +3.27% to $738.96 — a fade-the-rally stack against the 9/24 high of $777.73. The day's single largest print is AMGN's $96.7M in 460 puts.

Bearish Bets to Watch

META (score 88) — $63.2M puts across 14 contracts, up from $15.8M yesterday. The anchor is $48.95M at the 720 Dec 18 put (29.6x V/OI), plus 725 and 705 strikes. No TRO confirmation; the +3.27% bounce is what they're fading, and yesterday's bullish META call was right (+3.27%) — today the flow says that was the top.

SPY (score 62) — $88.6M puts, 12 contracts over 20x V/OI. $25.36M at the 745 Oct 23 put (70.7x) and $11.5M at 725 Oct 23 (31.4x). PCR 1.53 defensive; no TRO, and yesterday's SPY bearish bet was flat (-0.12%).

IWM (score 61) — $31.7M puts with PCR 3.36, the most defensive index read. 264 Nov 20 puts at 422x V/OI ($9.42M) and 266 Nov 20 at 109x ($5.62M). TRO confirmed; yesterday's IWM bearish bet was flat (-0.26%).

AMGN (score 33) — a single $96.7M 460 Oct 16 put (6.3x, -8.6% OTM), nearly all of Health Care's $104.3M put notional. It was wrong yesterday (+1.23%); size at that strike reads as a hedge or a doubling-down, not fresh conviction.

TSLA (score 48) / NVDA (score 46) — TSLA $9.0M puts (587x V/OI) with the stock -1.24%, a bearish bet that paid and is TRO-confirmed. NVDA $12.8M puts (680x, clustered at the 230 strike), no TRO, stock -0.72% and also validated yesterday.

Bullish Bets to Watch

AAPL (score 61) — $9.4M calls across 28 contracts (8 over 20x V/OI). 332 Oct 9 calls at 44x ($1.74M) and 332 Oct 7 at 200.8x. TRO confirmed, but yesterday's AAPL call bet was wrong (-2.61%), the stock fell again today, and $7.3M in puts sits on the other side — a two-way trade, not a clean breakout.

WMT (score 61) — $3.4M calls, a fresh jump from $0.2M yesterday. 106 Oct 16 calls at 60.5x ($1.05M). No TRO; the stock is -1.77% today, so this is a dip-buy into a falling tape.

INTC (score 55) — $8.4M calls, TRO confirmed. 122 Oct 9 calls at 218.7x ($2.23M) and 131 Oct 16 at 25.5x ($1.18M, +13% OTM). Stock flat (-0.13%) after a -5.59% drop yesterday.

ORCL (score 50) — $18.9M calls, up from $3.9M yesterday. 140 Nov 20 at $7.66M and 155 Nov 6 at 265.7x. The bullish bet paid yesterday (+3.92% to $137.83); no TRO, and the stock is now up against its 50-day mid-range.

TSLA (score 49) — $22.2M calls (602x V/OI) versus $9.0M puts (587x), but spot is -1.24% and yesterday's bullish TSLA call was wrong. Two-sided, size leaning calls.

The Oracle Read

The tape is hedged, not panicked: $228.0M of put flow is concentrated in SPY/IWM/QQQ protection, and PCRs above 1 on all three say institutions are buying downside cover into a flat tape. META's $63.2M put stack against a +3.27% bounce is the highest-conviction single read, but it lacks TRO confirmation, so treat it as unproven until price turns. The cleanest directional signals are on the call side — INTC and AAPL both TRO-confirmed — with AAPL the weaker of the two because price keeps disagreeing.

Names to Watch at the Open

  • META — fade risk; $48.95M at 720 Dec puts, watch $738.96 vs the $777.73 high.
  • AMGN — the $96.7M 460 put; spot $423.54, strike sits -8.6% below.
  • SPY — 745/725 Oct 23 put stack; a break of $764.38 opens the downside path.
  • AAPL — TRO-confirmed 332 calls but price breaking down; watch $329.58.
  • INTC — 122 Oct 9 calls; watch a reclaim of $122.

Total unusual put notional: $228.0M across 10 sectors. Sectors with 🔴 Defensive signal have BOTH high PCR (>1.2) AND >$2M of unusual put buying — institutions are actively hedging there. 🟢 Risk-On means call-heavy with no defensive flow — the safest put-selling ground.

How to read the Sector Tape

The sector tape aggregates the daily option chain by GICS sector. For each sector it computes the put/call ratio (PCR) and the total notional of unusual put prints (contracts where today's volume exceeds existing open interest by 50%+). The signal tells you where institutions are positioning defensively vs. where they're comfortable being long.

  • PCR (put/call ratio) — put volume ÷ call volume (or OI). Above 1.0 = puts trade more than calls (defensive). Below 0.8 = call-heavy (risk-on). The OI version is more stable; the volume version is more reactive to today's flow.
  • UnusualPut$ — total notional ($ = volume × mid × 100) of put contracts where volume > 1.5× open interest AND notional > $50K. This is the UnusualWhales signal: new positions opening rather than existing ones trading hands. Large values = someone is paying up for protection.
  • Signal — derived from PCR + unusual notional. 🔴 Defensive (PCR > 1.2 AND > $2M unusual) = heavy hedging — be cautious selling puts there. 🟡 Caution = some defensive flow. 🟢 Risk-On (PCR < 0.9, < $500K unusual) = calmest put-selling ground. ⚪ Neutral = mixed.

How to use it with ChainScan

The sector tape is the weather report above the single-name scanner. A bull-put-spread TAKE verdict on a name in a 🟢 Risk-On sector is high confidence — the tape confirms nobody's hedging there. A TAKE verdict on a name in a 🔴 Defensive sector should be downgraded: institutions are actively buying puts at the strikes you'd be selling, so either skip the trade, go further OTM (0.15 delta instead of 0.20), or shorten DTE to get ahead of the hedging flow. The ETF block (SPY/QQQ/IWM) gives the macro read — if QQQ is 🔴 Defensive, every tech name on the ChainScan table carries extra risk.

The top-prints table

Shows the 15 largest unusual put prints across all sectors, sorted by notional. This is where you see the actual whale activity: which symbol, which strike, which expiration, and how much money is behind it. A single $50M put print could be one institution hedging a long book (not necessarily bearish) or a fresh directional bet. When you see clusters across multiple strikes and names in the same sector, the institutional interpretation gets stronger.

🎯 Smart Money — directional-bet detection (both sides)

Two tables surface institutional directional bets. 🐻 Bearish bets (unusual put activity): names where put buying looks like a coordinated bear bet. 🐂 Bullish bets (unusual call activity): names where call buying looks like a coordinated bull bet. The conviction score separates directional bets from dispersed hedging using three features: (1) V/OI breadth — fraction of notional in contracts with V/OI > 20×, discounted by sample size; (2) strike concentration — fraction of notional in the dominant strike cluster (within 2% of spot); (3) notional scale — saturates at $5M. Score ≥70 = strong directional bet, ≥50 = moderate, ≥30 = some clustering.

The TRO columns (D/W/M) show the trend on daily/weekly/monthly timeframes. ✅ TRO Confirmed: for bearish bets, daily AND weekly both ▼ (downtrend); for bullish bets, daily AND weekly both ▲ (uptrend). The highest-conviction signals are bets in the direction TRO already confirms. A high score with TRO NOT confirmed means the option market may be ahead of the trend indicator — an early warning.

Example (bearish): LLY on 2026-07-29 had $27.7M unusual puts, V/OI up to 284×, concentrated in 5 strikes within $20 of spot, placed at the top of a 5-day rally. TRO daily red since July 15. LLY fell 4% the next day. Example (bullish): AMD on 2026-07-29 had $28M unusual calls at the bottom of a 22% crash week ($543→$425). The calls were concentrated in Aug 7 expiry (through earnings Aug 4). AMD bounced +15% the next day on a Microsoft-led chip rebound and a $14B Core Scientific deal. Both sides of the tape are predictive.

Caveat: open interest lags one day (reported from the previous close). Volume can be driven by a single large order as easily as by distributed flow. Hedging is not the same as bearish — a put buyer may be insuring a long position, not speculating. Use the tape as a confirming colour on top of technical analysis, not as a standalone forecast.
