Daily Tape Analysis — 2026-09-18
The Story
Indexes went nowhere (SPY +0.02%, QQQ +0.83%) while money rotated hard: crypto-adjacent names ripped (MSTR +16.37%, COIN +11.70%, HOOD +9.13%, IBIT +6.17%) and semis followed (AVGO +3.01%, TXN +3.35%, AMD +2.29%), while discretionary and comm services sold off (QCOM -5.64%, GM -5.09%, ACN -4.77%, NFLX -4.65%). Yesterday's conviction bets split: bearish META (-2.16%) and MSFT (-0.92%) paid, but bearish QQQ and AMD were wrong as both rose; bullish AVGO (+3.01%), CAT (+1.21%), GOOGL (+0.52%), and QQQ (+0.83%) all paid. The one big shift today is IWM — $22.3M in puts at 158x V/OI, the highest conviction score on the board (62), betting small caps roll over from $284.10. The $28.3M SPY 670 call (143.6x V/OI, 12.1% deep ITM) is the largest single line but reads as positioning, not fresh direction.
Bearish Bets to Watch
IWM (score 62) — $22.3M unusual puts across 30 contracts, 158x V/OI, 6 strikes. Heaviest lines are the 283 Oct 16 put ($7.9M, 3.5x) and the 279 Oct 9 put ($4.4M, 48.7x). Spot is $284.10, down 4.07% over 43 days, and puts keep pressing the 283-279 zone.
GOOGL (score 59) — $3.3M puts at 107x V/OI, 3 strikes clustered at the 355 line (Sep 28, Sep 30, Oct 2). Spot closed $349.23 (+0.52%) and is flat over 43 days (+0.11%). The same name drew $18.3M in bullish calls yesterday that were right (+0.52%) — a two-way tape.
META (score 55) — $18.6M puts, 18x V/OI, 6 strikes, led by the 670 Dec 18 put at $10.6M (3.2x). Yesterday's bearish bet was correct: spot fell 2.16% to $666.74. No TRO confirmation yet.
QQQ (score 53) — $25.3M puts at 52x V/OI across 11 strikes, plus a 676 Oct 30 tail put at 51.9x V/OI ($2.5M, 6.4% OTM). Yesterday's bearish QQQ bet was wrong (+0.83%); this is fresh hedging above the 715-719 put wall.
AMD (score 43) — $13.0M puts at 10x V/OI, with the 570 Dec 18 put ($4.4M, 1.9x) the largest single-name line. Betting the +2.29% move to $557.32 and the two-day +8.6% pop is the top; yesterday's bearish AMD bet was wrong. No TRO confirmation.
Bullish Bets to Watch
SPY (score 65) — $86.8M unusual calls, 647x V/OI, 7 strikes. The dominant print is the 670 Sep 30 call: $28.3M at 143.6x V/OI, 12.1% deep ITM — positioning, not fresh direction. No TRO confirmation.
NFLX (score 59) — $8.1M calls, 110x V/OI, all clustered at the 72 strike (Oct 2 through Nov 20). Spot fell 4.65% to $71.80, so buyers are catching the dip just 0.3% below the 72 wall. No TRO confirmation.
GOOGL (score 50) — $18.3M calls, 52x V/OI, 3 strikes, headlined by the 355 Oct 16 call ($6.6M, 1.7x). Yesterday's bullish GOOGL bet was right (+0.52%). No TRO confirmation.
TSLA (score 46) — $41.8M calls, 23x V/OI, 3 strikes, with the 365 Oct 16 call ($7.2M, 1.6x) the heaviest line. Spot is flat at $364.30 (-0.47%); call flow is betting the 365 level breaks. No TRO confirmation.
AVGO (score 45) — $4.2M calls, 10x V/OI, 3 strikes. Yesterday's bullish AVGO bet was right (+3.01% to $357.74). No TRO confirmation.
The Oracle Read
The tape is two-sided at the index level: heavy put accumulation in IWM and QQQ against deep-ITM SPY call positioning, which reads as rotation risk, not an outright top. The cleanest directional setup is IWM downside — highest conviction score (62), a persistent 43-day downtrend, and puts stacked at 279-283 just below spot. Semis and crypto hold the momentum, and the AMD and TSLA put flow is the contrarian fade against it.
Names to Watch at the Open
- IWM — down; watch 283 (Oct 16) and 279 (Oct 9); top conviction put, spot -4.07% over 43 days.
- SPY — two-sided; 670/680 deep-ITM calls are positioning, not direction; 745 Oct 30 put ($15.5M) is the downside hedge.
- META — down; 670 Dec 18 put ($10.6M) anchors it; yesterday's bear bet already paid.
- AMD — up, but puts stacked at 570/560 Dec; fade the +8.6% two-day pop.
- MSTR — up; 155 Oct 16 call ($13.2M) and 150 Oct 2 call ($7.5M) lead the crypto-beta call flow after +16.37%.

Total unusual put notional: $85.5M across 10 sectors. Sectors with 🔴 Defensive signal have BOTH high PCR (>1.2) AND >$2M of unusual put buying — institutions are actively hedging there. 🟢 Risk-On means call-heavy with no defensive flow — the safest put-selling ground.
How to read the Sector Tape
The sector tape aggregates the daily option chain by GICS sector. For each sector it computes the put/call ratio (PCR) and the total notional of unusual put prints (contracts where today's volume exceeds existing open interest by 50%+). The signal tells you where institutions are positioning defensively vs. where they're comfortable being long.
- PCR (put/call ratio) — put volume ÷ call volume (or OI). Above 1.0 = puts trade more than calls (defensive). Below 0.8 = call-heavy (risk-on). The OI version is more stable; the volume version is more reactive to today's flow.
- UnusualPut$ — total notional ($ = volume × mid × 100) of put contracts where volume > 1.5× open interest AND notional > $50K. This is the UnusualWhales signal: new positions opening rather than existing ones trading hands. Large values = someone is paying up for protection.
- Signal — derived from PCR + unusual notional. 🔴 Defensive (PCR > 1.2 AND > $2M unusual) = heavy hedging — be cautious selling puts there. 🟡 Caution = some defensive flow. 🟢 Risk-On (PCR < 0.9, < $500K unusual) = calmest put-selling ground. ⚪ Neutral = mixed.
How to use it with ChainScan
The sector tape is the weather report above the single-name scanner. A bull-put-spread TAKE verdict on a name in a 🟢 Risk-On sector is high confidence — the tape confirms nobody's hedging there. A TAKE verdict on a name in a 🔴 Defensive sector should be downgraded: institutions are actively buying puts at the strikes you'd be selling, so either skip the trade, go further OTM (0.15 delta instead of 0.20), or shorten DTE to get ahead of the hedging flow. The ETF block (SPY/QQQ/IWM) gives the macro read — if QQQ is 🔴 Defensive, every tech name on the ChainScan table carries extra risk.
The top-prints table
Shows the 15 largest unusual put prints across all sectors, sorted by notional. This is where you see the actual whale activity: which symbol, which strike, which expiration, and how much money is behind it. A single $50M put print could be one institution hedging a long book (not necessarily bearish) or a fresh directional bet. When you see clusters across multiple strikes and names in the same sector, the institutional interpretation gets stronger.
🎯 Smart Money — directional-bet detection (both sides)
Two tables surface institutional directional bets. 🐻 Bearish bets (unusual put activity): names where put buying looks like a coordinated bear bet. 🐂 Bullish bets (unusual call activity): names where call buying looks like a coordinated bull bet. The conviction score separates directional bets from dispersed hedging using three features: (1) V/OI breadth — fraction of notional in contracts with V/OI > 20×, discounted by sample size; (2) strike concentration — fraction of notional in the dominant strike cluster (within 2% of spot); (3) notional scale — saturates at $5M. Score ≥70 = strong directional bet, ≥50 = moderate, ≥30 = some clustering.
The TRO columns (D/W/M) show the trend on daily/weekly/monthly timeframes. ✅ TRO Confirmed: for bearish bets, daily AND weekly both ▼ (downtrend); for bullish bets, daily AND weekly both ▲ (uptrend). The highest-conviction signals are bets in the direction TRO already confirms. A high score with TRO NOT confirmed means the option market may be ahead of the trend indicator — an early warning.
Example (bearish): LLY on 2026-07-29 had $27.7M unusual puts, V/OI up to 284×, concentrated in 5 strikes within $20 of spot, placed at the top of a 5-day rally. TRO daily red since July 15. LLY fell 4% the next day. Example (bullish): AMD on 2026-07-29 had $28M unusual calls at the bottom of a 22% crash week ($543→$425). The calls were concentrated in Aug 7 expiry (through earnings Aug 4). AMD bounced +15% the next day on a Microsoft-led chip rebound and a $14B Core Scientific deal. Both sides of the tape are predictive.
Caveat: open interest lags one day (reported from the previous close). Volume can be driven by a single large order as easily as by distributed flow. Hedging is not the same as bearish — a put buyer may be insuring a long position, not speculating. Use the tape as a confirming colour on top of technical analysis, not as a standalone forecast.
