Daily Tape Analysis — 2026-10-13

The Story

The tape compiled $208.2M in unusual put notional on a flat tape — SPY closed +0.01% at 778.03, but internals split: health care and financials sold off (JNJ -5.88%, C -5.60%, CAT -3.33%) while mega-cap tech and energy rallied (ORCL +4.27%, CHTR +4.27%, META +2.62%, AMD +2.30%). Yesterday's conviction bets were mixed: bearish CAT and TSLA paid, but bearish META was wrong (+2.62%), and bullish ORCL, AMD, and AVGO all hit. The one big shift today is size — NVDA put notional jumped from $4.2M to $36.2M overnight, and META put flow nearly tripled to $77.4M even as the stock broke out. That is protection being bought into strength, not directional capitulation.

Bearish Bets to Watch

NVDA (score 65) — $36.2M puts across 21 contracts, max 1204x V/OI on the 250 strike. The bulk is deep OTM 245/242/240 puts expiring 10/21 (-4.7% to -6.9% vs spot $229.20). No TRO confirmation, and the other side is $62.9M in calls at 2640x V/OI — this is a two-way book, so treat it as range defense around 229-250, not a clean short.

MSFT (score 59) — $16.6M puts, 240x V/OI, anchored by $3.69M at the 555 strike (10/23, -2.1%). Spot +0.45% to $543.51, and yesterday's bullish MSFT bet (score 78, $23.7M calls) only broke even. No TRO confirmation; the put cluster at 545-555 marks the rejection zone.

META (score 51) — $77.4M puts, the largest single-name put stack today, concentrated in 750/740 10/23 ($16.1M at 28.4x and $10.6M at 17.7x). Spot broke out +2.62% to $762.51, so these are near-the-money (1.6-3.0% OTM) hedges against a two-day +6.2% run. Yesterday's bearish META bet was wrong; the 750/740 wall is the line that matters now.

AAPL (score 53) — $12.9M puts, 185x V/OI, led by the 345 strike 10/30 (-1.1%). Spot flat at $341.33, and AAPL also carries TRO-confirmed bullish calls ($9.2M, 229x) — another two-sided name. No TRO on the put side.

Index hedging — QQQ $42.4M puts (100x) and SPY $24.1M puts (769x) sit behind a $110.5M QQQ call print. IWM is the only clean bearish signal here: $12.1M puts with TRO confirmation ✅.

Bullish Bets to Watch

IWM (score 74) — $19.0M calls, top bullish conviction, led by $10.24M at the 278 strike 10/30 (24.5x, +0.4%). Contradicted by TRO-confirmed bearish puts on the same name and a -6.54% 60-day slide to $276.79 — the 278 level is the battleground.

JNJ (score 58) — $5.5M calls, 397x V/OI, concentrated at the 258 strike 10/23 (+3.6%). This is a dip buy: spot fell -5.88% to $248.57, and $1.01M went in at the 242 strike (397x). Cleanest contrarian long on the board if 248 holds.

SPY (score 54) — $29.0M calls, 582x V/OI, TRO confirmed ✅, spread across the 778-785 strikes. Reads as a hold-and-grind bet at all-time-high territory rather than a breakout chase.

INTC (score 51) — $25.9M calls, 73x V/OI, with $6.0M at 100 and $4.8M at 102 (both 10/23). Spot +1.50% to $102.86 and the 100/102 strikes are right at the money — a momentum continuation bet.

TSLA (score 52) — $9.4M calls, TRO confirmed ✅, led by $5.05M at the 375 strike 11/13 (+0.1%). Spot -0.93% to $374.52; yesterday's bearish TSLA put was correct, so this is a flip back to long at the same level.

The Oracle Read

The tape is distribution, not panic — puts are being layered under new highs (META, NVDA, QQQ) while call flow stays larger on the index side. The strongest directional setups are CAT and TSLA on the short side (both validated yesterday, CAT -3.33% and still TRO-confirmed) and JNJ's dip-buying calls on the long side. Watch META's 750/740 put wall: a close back below 750 would convert this week's breakout into a failed top.

Names to Watch at the Open

  • META — short trigger if $762 fails to hold the 750/740 put wall; $77.4M says protection is loaded there.
  • NVDA — range play 229-250; $36.2M puts vs $62.9M calls keeps it pinned.
  • JNJ — long bounce candidate at $248.57 after -5.88%; $5.5M dip-buying calls at 258.
  • IWM — 278 is the pivot; TRO-confirmed puts against the highest bullish call score.
  • CAT — short continuation; -3.33% yesterday, TRO-confirmed puts, 60-day slide now -13.23%.

Total unusual put notional: $208.2M across 10 sectors. Sectors with 🔴 Defensive signal have BOTH high PCR (>1.2) AND >$2M of unusual put buying — institutions are actively hedging there. 🟢 Risk-On means call-heavy with no defensive flow — the safest put-selling ground.

How to read the Sector Tape

The sector tape aggregates the daily option chain by GICS sector. For each sector it computes the put/call ratio (PCR) and the total notional of unusual put prints (contracts where today's volume exceeds existing open interest by 50%+). The signal tells you where institutions are positioning defensively vs. where they're comfortable being long.

  • PCR (put/call ratio) — put volume ÷ call volume (or OI). Above 1.0 = puts trade more than calls (defensive). Below 0.8 = call-heavy (risk-on). The OI version is more stable; the volume version is more reactive to today's flow.
  • UnusualPut$ — total notional ($ = volume × mid × 100) of put contracts where volume > 1.5× open interest AND notional > $50K. This is the UnusualWhales signal: new positions opening rather than existing ones trading hands. Large values = someone is paying up for protection.
  • Signal — derived from PCR + unusual notional. 🔴 Defensive (PCR > 1.2 AND > $2M unusual) = heavy hedging — be cautious selling puts there. 🟡 Caution = some defensive flow. 🟢 Risk-On (PCR < 0.9, < $500K unusual) = calmest put-selling ground. ⚪ Neutral = mixed.

How to use it with ChainScan

The sector tape is the weather report above the single-name scanner. A bull-put-spread TAKE verdict on a name in a 🟢 Risk-On sector is high confidence — the tape confirms nobody's hedging there. A TAKE verdict on a name in a 🔴 Defensive sector should be downgraded: institutions are actively buying puts at the strikes you'd be selling, so either skip the trade, go further OTM (0.15 delta instead of 0.20), or shorten DTE to get ahead of the hedging flow. The ETF block (SPY/QQQ/IWM) gives the macro read — if QQQ is 🔴 Defensive, every tech name on the ChainScan table carries extra risk.

The top-prints table

Shows the 15 largest unusual put prints across all sectors, sorted by notional. This is where you see the actual whale activity: which symbol, which strike, which expiration, and how much money is behind it. A single $50M put print could be one institution hedging a long book (not necessarily bearish) or a fresh directional bet. When you see clusters across multiple strikes and names in the same sector, the institutional interpretation gets stronger.

🎯 Smart Money — directional-bet detection (both sides)

Two tables surface institutional directional bets. 🐻 Bearish bets (unusual put activity): names where put buying looks like a coordinated bear bet. 🐂 Bullish bets (unusual call activity): names where call buying looks like a coordinated bull bet. The conviction score separates directional bets from dispersed hedging using three features: (1) V/OI breadth — fraction of notional in contracts with V/OI > 20×, discounted by sample size; (2) strike concentration — fraction of notional in the dominant strike cluster (within 2% of spot); (3) notional scale — saturates at $5M. Score ≥70 = strong directional bet, ≥50 = moderate, ≥30 = some clustering.

The TRO columns (D/W/M) show the trend on daily/weekly/monthly timeframes. ✅ TRO Confirmed: for bearish bets, daily AND weekly both ▼ (downtrend); for bullish bets, daily AND weekly both ▲ (uptrend). The highest-conviction signals are bets in the direction TRO already confirms. A high score with TRO NOT confirmed means the option market may be ahead of the trend indicator — an early warning.

Example (bearish): LLY on 2026-07-29 had $27.7M unusual puts, V/OI up to 284×, concentrated in 5 strikes within $20 of spot, placed at the top of a 5-day rally. TRO daily red since July 15. LLY fell 4% the next day. Example (bullish): AMD on 2026-07-29 had $28M unusual calls at the bottom of a 22% crash week ($543→$425). The calls were concentrated in Aug 7 expiry (through earnings Aug 4). AMD bounced +15% the next day on a Microsoft-led chip rebound and a $14B Core Scientific deal. Both sides of the tape are predictive.

Caveat: open interest lags one day (reported from the previous close). Volume can be driven by a single large order as easily as by distributed flow. Hedging is not the same as bearish — a put buyer may be insuring a long position, not speculating. Use the tape as a confirming colour on top of technical analysis, not as a standalone forecast.
