Daily Tape Analysis — 2026-09-15

The Story

Broad risk-off: SPY -0.41%, QQQ -0.68%, IWM -0.91%, with every sector flagged caution. Crypto-adjacent names led the decline (COIN -10.10%, MSTR -5.35%, IBIT -4.59%, HOOD -3.79%) while energy (XOM +2.56%, CVX +2.62%, COP +3.34%) and QCOM (+4.27%) were the only real strength. Yesterday's bearish conviction bets paid off on 8 of 10 names; yesterday's bullish bets failed on 8 of 10, including the top score (ADBE 84, -2.94%). Today's big shift is IWM: score 72, $37.4M in puts, spot breaking to a 40-day low at $285.26. Index put clusters now fill three of the top four bearish slots — IWM, QQQ, SPY.

Bearish Bets to Watch

IWM (score 72) — $37.4M unusual puts across 33 contracts, 7 with V/OI >20x. Key print: $17.4M on 272 Oct-16 puts at 168.3x V/OI (4.6% OTM), plus $9.2M on the 271 Oct-16. Spot $285.26 is a 40-day low, -3.68% over the window; yesterday's IWM bearish bet was right (-0.91%). No TRO confirmation.

QQQ (score 54) — $39.8M puts across 66 contracts. Key print: $14.7M on 675 Nov-30 puts at 250.4x V/OI (4.3% OTM), plus $4.0M on 704 Oct-16. Yesterday's QQQ bearish bet was right (-0.68%). No TRO; QQQ also carries $49.6M in calls, but the put strikes cluster tighter.

META (score 52) — $18.0M puts across 44 contracts; largest $3.2M on 675 Sep-25 at 47x V/OI (slightly ITM). Daily/weekly trend up, monthly down; spot +0.73% to $670.49, near range highs. Yesterday's META bearish bet was wrong and the bull side holds TRO confirmation, so this read is fading.

SPY (score 47) — $48.4M puts; key print $13.1M on 745 Sep-25, but at only 2.1x V/OI against already-elevated OI, so it reads as hedging rather than fresh conviction. Rest of the book ladders 724–753 across Sep/Oct. Yesterday's SPY bearish bet was flat (-0.41%).

TSLA (score 47) — $16.1M puts concentrated 350–360 across Sep-23/Sep-25, at spot $356.61. Yesterday's TSLA bearish bet was right (-0.67%). No TRO; the call side is larger ($23.5M), so the name is two-sided into Friday expiry.

Bullish Bets to Watch

QQQ (score 59) — $49.6M calls across 15 strikes, 653x max V/OI. Largest index-call prints are deep ITM (SPY 680 Oct-9 at $19.8M, IWM 247/244) — consistent with position rolls rather than fresh directional bets. Treat this cluster with caution.

SPY (score 52) — $99.1M calls on 8 strikes, 1256x max V/OI; the $19.8M 680 Oct-9 print sits 10.2% ITM. Deep-ITM size reads as roll/hedge flow, not a clean bull signal.

META (score 48, TRO ✅) — $25.3M calls on 6 strikes at 1579x V/OI. The only bullish bet that was right yesterday (+0.73%), with spot at a 40-day high of $670.49. Strongest confirmed long read on the board.

TSLA (score 50) — $23.5M calls; key print $8.3M on 360 Sep-25 at 7.1x V/OI. Two-sided against $16.1M puts at the same strikes; this-week expiry sets up pin risk at 360.

AMZN (score 38) — $25.4M calls; key print $16.6M on 265 Nov-20 at 3.0x V/OI (6.7% OTM). But yesterday's AMZN call bet (score 73) failed (-2.00%) and the put side printed 294x V/OI, so momentum argues against this one.

The Oracle Read

Index puts carry the highest conviction, and IWM is the cleanest single read: score 72, new 40-day low, and a validated bearish track record. META is the only name where TRO confirms the bull side while price sits at range highs. Expect continued drift lower in small caps and QQQ; energy is the counter-trend.

Names to Watch at the Open

  • IWM — downside pressure below 285; the 272 Oct puts are the day's biggest bearish cluster.
  • QQQ — spot 705 vs the 675 Nov put block; a break of 700 confirms the bearish ladder.
  • META — long side confirmed (TRO); 670.49 near highs with 675/688/700 call flow.
  • TSLA — 360 pivot with two-sided Sep-25 flow; pin risk into Friday.
  • CVX — energy strength (+2.62%) met by a $3.5M top-fade put bet at 210 Oct-16.

Total unusual put notional: $86.1M across 10 sectors. Sectors with 🔴 Defensive signal have BOTH high PCR (>1.2) AND >$2M of unusual put buying — institutions are actively hedging there. 🟢 Risk-On means call-heavy with no defensive flow — the safest put-selling ground.

How to read the Sector Tape

The sector tape aggregates the daily option chain by GICS sector. For each sector it computes the put/call ratio (PCR) and the total notional of unusual put prints (contracts where today's volume exceeds existing open interest by 50%+). The signal tells you where institutions are positioning defensively vs. where they're comfortable being long.

  • PCR (put/call ratio) — put volume ÷ call volume (or OI). Above 1.0 = puts trade more than calls (defensive). Below 0.8 = call-heavy (risk-on). The OI version is more stable; the volume version is more reactive to today's flow.
  • UnusualPut$ — total notional ($ = volume × mid × 100) of put contracts where volume > 1.5× open interest AND notional > $50K. This is the UnusualWhales signal: new positions opening rather than existing ones trading hands. Large values = someone is paying up for protection.
  • Signal — derived from PCR + unusual notional. 🔴 Defensive (PCR > 1.2 AND > $2M unusual) = heavy hedging — be cautious selling puts there. 🟡 Caution = some defensive flow. 🟢 Risk-On (PCR < 0.9, < $500K unusual) = calmest put-selling ground. ⚪ Neutral = mixed.

How to use it with ChainScan

The sector tape is the weather report above the single-name scanner. A bull-put-spread TAKE verdict on a name in a 🟢 Risk-On sector is high confidence — the tape confirms nobody's hedging there. A TAKE verdict on a name in a 🔴 Defensive sector should be downgraded: institutions are actively buying puts at the strikes you'd be selling, so either skip the trade, go further OTM (0.15 delta instead of 0.20), or shorten DTE to get ahead of the hedging flow. The ETF block (SPY/QQQ/IWM) gives the macro read — if QQQ is 🔴 Defensive, every tech name on the ChainScan table carries extra risk.

The top-prints table

Shows the 15 largest unusual put prints across all sectors, sorted by notional. This is where you see the actual whale activity: which symbol, which strike, which expiration, and how much money is behind it. A single $50M put print could be one institution hedging a long book (not necessarily bearish) or a fresh directional bet. When you see clusters across multiple strikes and names in the same sector, the institutional interpretation gets stronger.

🎯 Smart Money — directional-bet detection (both sides)

Two tables surface institutional directional bets. 🐻 Bearish bets (unusual put activity): names where put buying looks like a coordinated bear bet. 🐂 Bullish bets (unusual call activity): names where call buying looks like a coordinated bull bet. The conviction score separates directional bets from dispersed hedging using three features: (1) V/OI breadth — fraction of notional in contracts with V/OI > 20×, discounted by sample size; (2) strike concentration — fraction of notional in the dominant strike cluster (within 2% of spot); (3) notional scale — saturates at $5M. Score ≥70 = strong directional bet, ≥50 = moderate, ≥30 = some clustering.

The TRO columns (D/W/M) show the trend on daily/weekly/monthly timeframes. ✅ TRO Confirmed: for bearish bets, daily AND weekly both ▼ (downtrend); for bullish bets, daily AND weekly both ▲ (uptrend). The highest-conviction signals are bets in the direction TRO already confirms. A high score with TRO NOT confirmed means the option market may be ahead of the trend indicator — an early warning.

Example (bearish): LLY on 2026-07-29 had $27.7M unusual puts, V/OI up to 284×, concentrated in 5 strikes within $20 of spot, placed at the top of a 5-day rally. TRO daily red since July 15. LLY fell 4% the next day. Example (bullish): AMD on 2026-07-29 had $28M unusual calls at the bottom of a 22% crash week ($543→$425). The calls were concentrated in Aug 7 expiry (through earnings Aug 4). AMD bounced +15% the next day on a Microsoft-led chip rebound and a $14B Core Scientific deal. Both sides of the tape are predictive.

Caveat: open interest lags one day (reported from the previous close). Volume can be driven by a single large order as easily as by distributed flow. Hedging is not the same as bearish — a put buyer may be insuring a long position, not speculating. Use the tape as a confirming colour on top of technical analysis, not as a standalone forecast.
