Daily Tape Analysis — 2026-10-14

The Story

Broad risk-off day: SPY -1.18%, QQQ -2.11%, IWM -2.02%, led by semis and fintech (ORCL -8.87%, HOOD -8.50%, SMCI -8.44%, AMD -6.07%). Money rotated into health care (UNH +4.80%, BMY +4.57%, MRK +3.89%, ABBV +3.39%), staples (WMT +3.48%, COST +2.92%) and energy (XOM +1.66%). Yesterday's bearish conviction bets paid off — NVDA, MSFT, META, SPY, QQQ, IWM, TSLA all fell as positioned — while the bullish camp failed on 8 of 10 names (IWM, SPY, TSLA, INTC, NVDA, CAT, MSFT, AMD all fell). Today's put flow is concentrated in the indexes: $102.8M on IWM, $152.5M on QQQ, $138.3M on SPY, with TRO confirmation on the downside. The one clean shift is call flow into health care, where JNJ and ABBV are being confirmed by price.

Bearish Bets to Watch

META (score 78) — $38.7M puts across 21 contracts, max 458x V/OI. Largest print $21.7M at the 750 strike expiring 10/23 (21.6x, -1.7% OTM), spot $737.46 after -3.29%. PCR jumped to 1.29 from 1.10; no TRO confirmation, but yesterday's 51-score bearish bet was right.

COST (score 64) — $1.9M puts, max 412x V/OI on the 985 strike expiring 10/23. Fading the +2.92% pop to $982.38, the 61-day high. Near-the-money 990/985 puts; no TRO.

AAPL (score 59) — $22.1M puts, max 556x V/OI, PCR 1.41 vs 0.56 yesterday. Cluster on 348/355/345 strikes, spot $343.01 (+0.49%, the only mega-cap tech up today). Contrarian put flow against the strongest tech tape.

IWM (score 58) — $102.8M puts, 825x V/OI, TRO confirmed ✅. 258-262 Nov-20 put wall anchored by a $25.1M print at 260 (2.7x); spot $271.19 (-2.02%). Yesterday's bearish bet was right and the bullish call bet was wrong; down 8.43% over 61 days.

ORCL (score 55) — $17.1M puts, 186x V/OI, TRO confirmed ✅. Spot -8.87% to $130.56 after +4.27% yesterday; $7.3M at the 130 strike expiring 10/30.

Bullish Bets to Watch

JNJ (score 76) — $4.4M calls, max 80x V/OI, 3 strikes. $2.10M at the 258 call expiring 10/23 (80.2x), spot $253.91 after +2.15% rebound from yesterday's -5.88%. No TRO, but yesterday's bullish bet was right.

BAC (score 63) — $8.1M calls, 229x V/OI, 50-52 strikes expiring 10/23 (107x on 52, 147.9x on 49). Spot -4.71% to $51.41 today and bearish flow is also present (score 36, TRO ✅) — contrarian, with the stock down 16.1% over 62 days.

SPY (score 53) — $51.9M calls, 133x V/OI, TRO confirmed ✅, 16 strikes. Call wall at 767-780, but put flow is larger ($138.3M, PCR_v 1.98 defensive); yesterday's bullish bet was wrong.

ABBV (score 51) — $15.5M calls, 216x V/OI, TRO confirmed ✅. $10.8M at the 260 call expiring 10/23 (4.7x), spot $283.55 (+3.39%, 61-day high). Cleanest health-care confirmation.

WFC (score 46) — $1.6M calls, max 2072x V/OI. Tiny notional but extreme ratio; spot +0.20% to $80.89.

The Oracle Read

The tape is defensive: the largest money is in index puts with TRO-confirmed downside (IWM, ORCL, GS, BAC, AVGO), and today's sell-off validated the bear camp. Health care calls (JNJ, ABBV) are the clearest upside and are already moving with the flow. Expect continued downside pressure on semis and small caps into Friday's 10/23 expiry, with JNJ/ABBV as the long side.

Names to Watch at the Open

  • ORCL (short) — below 130 into 10/30 expiry; TRO confirmed, -8.87% today.
  • IWM (short) — 258-262 Nov-20 put wall, $25.1M at 260; TRO confirmed.
  • META (short) — 750 put 10/23, $21.7M; spot -3.29%.
  • JNJ (long) — 258 call 10/23, $2.10M; +2.15% rebound off yesterday's flush.
  • ABBV (long) — 260 call 10/23, $10.8M; TRO confirmed, +3.39% at 61-day high.
  • TSLA (two-sided) — $13.5M puts vs $33.4M calls; spot -1.77%.

Total unusual put notional: $182.1M across 10 sectors. Sectors with 🔴 Defensive signal have BOTH high PCR (>1.2) AND >$2M of unusual put buying — institutions are actively hedging there. 🟢 Risk-On means call-heavy with no defensive flow — the safest put-selling ground.

How to read the Sector Tape

The sector tape aggregates the daily option chain by GICS sector. For each sector it computes the put/call ratio (PCR) and the total notional of unusual put prints (contracts where today's volume exceeds existing open interest by 50%+). The signal tells you where institutions are positioning defensively vs. where they're comfortable being long.

  • PCR (put/call ratio) — put volume ÷ call volume (or OI). Above 1.0 = puts trade more than calls (defensive). Below 0.8 = call-heavy (risk-on). The OI version is more stable; the volume version is more reactive to today's flow.
  • UnusualPut$ — total notional ($ = volume × mid × 100) of put contracts where volume > 1.5× open interest AND notional > $50K. This is the UnusualWhales signal: new positions opening rather than existing ones trading hands. Large values = someone is paying up for protection.
  • Signal — derived from PCR + unusual notional. 🔴 Defensive (PCR > 1.2 AND > $2M unusual) = heavy hedging — be cautious selling puts there. 🟡 Caution = some defensive flow. 🟢 Risk-On (PCR < 0.9, < $500K unusual) = calmest put-selling ground. ⚪ Neutral = mixed.

How to use it with ChainScan

The sector tape is the weather report above the single-name scanner. A bull-put-spread TAKE verdict on a name in a 🟢 Risk-On sector is high confidence — the tape confirms nobody's hedging there. A TAKE verdict on a name in a 🔴 Defensive sector should be downgraded: institutions are actively buying puts at the strikes you'd be selling, so either skip the trade, go further OTM (0.15 delta instead of 0.20), or shorten DTE to get ahead of the hedging flow. The ETF block (SPY/QQQ/IWM) gives the macro read — if QQQ is 🔴 Defensive, every tech name on the ChainScan table carries extra risk.

The top-prints table

Shows the 15 largest unusual put prints across all sectors, sorted by notional. This is where you see the actual whale activity: which symbol, which strike, which expiration, and how much money is behind it. A single $50M put print could be one institution hedging a long book (not necessarily bearish) or a fresh directional bet. When you see clusters across multiple strikes and names in the same sector, the institutional interpretation gets stronger.

🎯 Smart Money — directional-bet detection (both sides)

Two tables surface institutional directional bets. 🐻 Bearish bets (unusual put activity): names where put buying looks like a coordinated bear bet. 🐂 Bullish bets (unusual call activity): names where call buying looks like a coordinated bull bet. The conviction score separates directional bets from dispersed hedging using three features: (1) V/OI breadth — fraction of notional in contracts with V/OI > 20×, discounted by sample size; (2) strike concentration — fraction of notional in the dominant strike cluster (within 2% of spot); (3) notional scale — saturates at $5M. Score ≥70 = strong directional bet, ≥50 = moderate, ≥30 = some clustering.

The TRO columns (D/W/M) show the trend on daily/weekly/monthly timeframes. ✅ TRO Confirmed: for bearish bets, daily AND weekly both ▼ (downtrend); for bullish bets, daily AND weekly both ▲ (uptrend). The highest-conviction signals are bets in the direction TRO already confirms. A high score with TRO NOT confirmed means the option market may be ahead of the trend indicator — an early warning.

Example (bearish): LLY on 2026-07-29 had $27.7M unusual puts, V/OI up to 284×, concentrated in 5 strikes within $20 of spot, placed at the top of a 5-day rally. TRO daily red since July 15. LLY fell 4% the next day. Example (bullish): AMD on 2026-07-29 had $28M unusual calls at the bottom of a 22% crash week ($543→$425). The calls were concentrated in Aug 7 expiry (through earnings Aug 4). AMD bounced +15% the next day on a Microsoft-led chip rebound and a $14B Core Scientific deal. Both sides of the tape are predictive.

Caveat: open interest lags one day (reported from the previous close). Volume can be driven by a single large order as easily as by distributed flow. Hedging is not the same as bearish — a put buyer may be insuring a long position, not speculating. Use the tape as a confirming colour on top of technical analysis, not as a standalone forecast.
