Daily Tape Analysis — 2026-10-06
The Story
The tape was up on 10-06: SPY +0.58%, QQQ +0.51%, and a broad advance led by CSCO +4.56%, AVGO +4.05%, and AMD +2.78%, while INTC fell -3.04% as the session's weakest name. Yesterday's index put buyers were wrong — SPY, QQQ, TSLA, MSFT, and AMD puts all lost as spot rose — and the call book was mostly right (AMD, LLY, TSLA, MSFT, WMT, QQQ, SPY, NFLX all paid). The one-sided exception is small caps: IWM put flow carried TRO confirmation and IWM did fall -0.63%. Today's shift is a heavy, contrarian put build at the top of the rally — $110.2M in unusual puts, concentrated in QQQ ($106.5M), SPY ($79.3M), and MSFT ($15.0M) right at new highs. The call side is thinner but TRO-confirmed in META, SPY, LLY, and AAPL.
Bearish Bets to Watch
MSFT (score 59) — $15.0M puts across 27 contracts, 54x max V/OI. The build is concentrated at the 530/535 line, at-the-money against spot $529.38. Put flow re-accelerated after two quiet days ($0.1M on 10-02, $14.0M yesterday, $15.0M today); no TRO confirmation.
QQQ (score 59) — $106.5M puts across 137 contracts, 494x max, 16 strikes. The 760/755/745 puts (10-16 through 11-20) sit right at spot $760.10; flow is growing ($83.8M → $106.5M) while QQQ keeps making highs, so yesterday's QQQ puts lost (+0.51%).
SPY (score 55) — $79.3M puts across 112 contracts, 1613x max. Largest print is the 740 put (10-30), 10.3x V/OI, $12.48M at 5% OTM, alongside 780/775 near-money hedges. Index PCR_v sits at 1.36 (defensive); yesterday's SPY puts were wrong.
INTC (score 54) — $8.3M puts across 19 contracts, 47x max. This is momentum-chasing: INTC fell -3.04% on 10-06 and is down -15.91% from its 07-23 close, and the 115/113 puts pile onto the decline. Yesterday's INTC call bet (43 score) was wrong, the puts are unconfirmed by TRO.
IWM (score 53) — $39.5M puts across 29 contracts, 588x max, TRO confirmed ✅. The 299 put (10-16) printed 587.6x V/OI, $8.44M, 6.3% in-the-money — defensive positioning, not a directional fade. Spot fell -0.63% yesterday, the only bearish bet that paid.
Bullish Bets to Watch
META (score 58) — $28.7M calls across 15 contracts, 150x max, TRO confirmed ✅. The 750 call (10-23) is 15.0x V/OI, $24.33M, 1.5% OTM against spot $739.17 — a single, large upside position. Yesterday's META put bet (63 score) came in flat at -0.34%.
SPY (score 54) — $96.8M calls across 11 strikes, 220x max, TRO confirmed ✅. The 810 call (12-18) is $42.6M, 3.9% OTM, plus $23.4M on the 800 (11-20) and a 119.3x print on the 790 (10-14). Same book is short puts and long calls, so the index flow is a two-way hedge rather than a clean direction.
LLY (score 54) — $4.8M calls across 28 contracts, 68x max, TRO confirmed ✅. Strikes 1185/1190/1270 (10-23 to 10-30) target 2.4–9.7% upside from spot $1157.28, which sits near the low end of its 1114.83–1280.56 range. Yesterday's LLY call bet (50 score) paid (+1.19%).
TSLA (score 54) — $9.1M calls across 20 contracts, 33x max, no TRO confirmation. The 382/385 calls (10-14 to 11-13) sit just above spot $380.68. TSLA runs both ways: $3.8M in unusual puts too, so this is a volatility play, not a clean bull lean.
ORCL (score 53) — $4.5M calls across 10 contracts, 52x max, no TRO confirmation. The 160 call (11-06) is 33.7x V/OI, $2.87M, 10.6% OTM — a cheap far-OTM upside bet. Spot +1.54% on 10-06 and +14.01% over 56 days; the far strike means it only pays on a real breakout.
The Oracle Read
The tape is long spot but short options: traders are selling upside into strength while layering index puts at the highs, which reads as distribution rather than a bearish reversal signal. The strongest directional setups are IWM's TRO-confirmed put flow (small caps already breaking down, -5.00% over 56 days) and META's single large 750 call, which is confirmed and unhedged. MSFT and QQQ are the ones to watch for a failed-breakout trigger — both are building puts at resistance with no TRO confirmation, so the put size matters only if spot stops making highs.
Names to Watch at the Open
- MSFT — downside trigger at 530; $15.0M puts stacked at 530/535, no TRO confirmation.
- INTC — continuation lower through 113; puts chasing a -3.04% slide, watch for a flush.
- META — upside trigger 750; $24.33M single 750 call, TRO confirmed.
- QQQ — 760 is the line; $106.5M puts sitting ATM, flow building into new highs.
- IWM — fade under 281; TRO-confirmed put flow, only bearish bet that worked yesterday.

Total unusual put notional: $110.2M across 10 sectors. Sectors with 🔴 Defensive signal have BOTH high PCR (>1.2) AND >$2M of unusual put buying — institutions are actively hedging there. 🟢 Risk-On means call-heavy with no defensive flow — the safest put-selling ground.
How to read the Sector Tape
The sector tape aggregates the daily option chain by GICS sector. For each sector it computes the put/call ratio (PCR) and the total notional of unusual put prints (contracts where today's volume exceeds existing open interest by 50%+). The signal tells you where institutions are positioning defensively vs. where they're comfortable being long.
- PCR (put/call ratio) — put volume ÷ call volume (or OI). Above 1.0 = puts trade more than calls (defensive). Below 0.8 = call-heavy (risk-on). The OI version is more stable; the volume version is more reactive to today's flow.
- UnusualPut$ — total notional ($ = volume × mid × 100) of put contracts where volume > 1.5× open interest AND notional > $50K. This is the UnusualWhales signal: new positions opening rather than existing ones trading hands. Large values = someone is paying up for protection.
- Signal — derived from PCR + unusual notional. 🔴 Defensive (PCR > 1.2 AND > $2M unusual) = heavy hedging — be cautious selling puts there. 🟡 Caution = some defensive flow. 🟢 Risk-On (PCR < 0.9, < $500K unusual) = calmest put-selling ground. ⚪ Neutral = mixed.
How to use it with ChainScan
The sector tape is the weather report above the single-name scanner. A bull-put-spread TAKE verdict on a name in a 🟢 Risk-On sector is high confidence — the tape confirms nobody's hedging there. A TAKE verdict on a name in a 🔴 Defensive sector should be downgraded: institutions are actively buying puts at the strikes you'd be selling, so either skip the trade, go further OTM (0.15 delta instead of 0.20), or shorten DTE to get ahead of the hedging flow. The ETF block (SPY/QQQ/IWM) gives the macro read — if QQQ is 🔴 Defensive, every tech name on the ChainScan table carries extra risk.
The top-prints table
Shows the 15 largest unusual put prints across all sectors, sorted by notional. This is where you see the actual whale activity: which symbol, which strike, which expiration, and how much money is behind it. A single $50M put print could be one institution hedging a long book (not necessarily bearish) or a fresh directional bet. When you see clusters across multiple strikes and names in the same sector, the institutional interpretation gets stronger.
🎯 Smart Money — directional-bet detection (both sides)
Two tables surface institutional directional bets. 🐻 Bearish bets (unusual put activity): names where put buying looks like a coordinated bear bet. 🐂 Bullish bets (unusual call activity): names where call buying looks like a coordinated bull bet. The conviction score separates directional bets from dispersed hedging using three features: (1) V/OI breadth — fraction of notional in contracts with V/OI > 20×, discounted by sample size; (2) strike concentration — fraction of notional in the dominant strike cluster (within 2% of spot); (3) notional scale — saturates at $5M. Score ≥70 = strong directional bet, ≥50 = moderate, ≥30 = some clustering.
The TRO columns (D/W/M) show the trend on daily/weekly/monthly timeframes. ✅ TRO Confirmed: for bearish bets, daily AND weekly both ▼ (downtrend); for bullish bets, daily AND weekly both ▲ (uptrend). The highest-conviction signals are bets in the direction TRO already confirms. A high score with TRO NOT confirmed means the option market may be ahead of the trend indicator — an early warning.
Example (bearish): LLY on 2026-07-29 had $27.7M unusual puts, V/OI up to 284×, concentrated in 5 strikes within $20 of spot, placed at the top of a 5-day rally. TRO daily red since July 15. LLY fell 4% the next day. Example (bullish): AMD on 2026-07-29 had $28M unusual calls at the bottom of a 22% crash week ($543→$425). The calls were concentrated in Aug 7 expiry (through earnings Aug 4). AMD bounced +15% the next day on a Microsoft-led chip rebound and a $14B Core Scientific deal. Both sides of the tape are predictive.
Caveat: open interest lags one day (reported from the previous close). Volume can be driven by a single large order as easily as by distributed flow. Hedging is not the same as bearish — a put buyer may be insuring a long position, not speculating. Use the tape as a confirming colour on top of technical analysis, not as a standalone forecast.
