Daily Tape Analysis — 2026-09-24

The Story

Broad down day: most of the tracked tape closed red, with FDX (−4.12%), UPS (−3.92%), GM (−3.74%), ORCL (−3.45%) and INTU (−3.38%) leading declines, while META (+4.16%) and INTC (+4.06%) were the rare large-cap gainers. Yesterday's conviction bets mostly missed — the two top bearish picks (GOOGL 71, UNH 71) both rose, and only HD, TSLA, MSFT and AVGO puts paid off; the call side was equally mixed with GOOGL the only clean win. Today the put flow concentrates in index ETFs — IWM $54.3M at 311x V/OI, QQQ $46.6M, SPY $43.0M — pushing SPY PCR_v to 1.50 and IWM to 3.45, a defensive posture. The single largest print is an AMGN 460 put, $139.5M in-the-money, which is almost all of Health Care's sector-leading $148.0M put notional. The one shift worth flagging: META's +4.16% move drew $74.3M in puts against $58.8M in calls — the tape is actively fading the pop.

Bearish Bets to Watch

IWM (score 58) — $54.3M puts across 37 contracts at 311x V/OI, the day's largest bearish notional. Key line: 269 put, 72,613 vol at 149.1x V/OI ($10.5M), 4.5% OTM. Spot $281.56, down 4.92% over 47 days; no TRO confirmation, and IWM's own 70-score call flow is the tape's top bullish bet, so small caps are two-sided.

MSFT (score 54) — $1.9M puts with a 510 strike Oct 5 at 200x V/OI ($1.16M), 2.5% OTM. Yesterday's bearish bet was right (spot −0.61% to $497.58). No TRO confirmation, but the call side is TRO-confirmed (score 57, $23.4M), so this put is a fade against confirmed bullish flow.

QQQ (score 53) — $46.6M puts across 76 contracts in a 14-strike cluster. The 720 put Oct 5 at 33.7x V/OI ($2.69M) is the 2.8%-OTM standout. Spot $740.40, +4.40% over 48 days; no TRO confirmation, while QQQ calls are TRO-confirmed (score 52).

GS (score 49) — $6.4M puts, TRO confirmed. Spot $923.25, down 14.76% over 47 days — the steepest multi-day slide of any top name. 920 put Dec 18 ($1.76M) anchors the flow; this is the cleanest bearish read because price already agrees with it.

META (score 48) — $74.3M puts at 198x, but spot jumped +4.16% to $777.73 (+20.18% over 47 days). 750 put Nov 20 ($9.6M) and 765 put Oct 16 at 55.1x ($6.0M) are fading the pop. No TRO confirmation; shorting the strongest name already failed once this week (GOOGL).

Bullish Bets to Watch

IWM (score 70) — highest bullish score in the tape: $15.1M calls at 65x across a 7-strike cluster. Runs directly against the $54.3M put flow; the direction IWM resolves will set the tone for the index tape.

AMZN (score 65) — $32.7M calls, led by the 260 strike Oct 30 at 25.5x V/OI ($21.67M), 4.3% OTM. Spot $249.34, +0.32% over 48 days. No TRO confirmation, but the single 260 print is the day's largest clean call.

MSFT (score 57) — TRO confirmed. $23.4M calls, 525 strike Oct 30 at 79.1x V/OI ($15.8M), 5.5% OTM. Cleanest bull setup of the day: confirmed flow plus a large single print against a $497.58 spot.

SPY (score 54) — TRO confirmed. $46.3M calls at 985x V/OI across 16 strikes. But SPY also carries $43.0M in puts, so the index is two-sided with a slight call edge.

TSLA (score 50) — TRO confirmed. $32.9M calls at 50x, but $36.7M in puts on the other side. Two-sided; the 380/390 puts (Oct 2) and 380/385 calls (Oct 2/30) bracket spot $377.99.

The Oracle Read

The index layer is defensive (SPY 1.50, IWM 3.45 PCR_v) while mega-caps are two-sided, so don't expect a clean directional open. MSFT calls are the strongest single setup — TRO-confirmed with a $15.8M 525 print — and GS puts are the strongest bearish confirmation. META is the tell: if the $74.3M fade of a +4.16% move wins, it validates the broad defensive posture.

Names to Watch at the Open

  • IWM — bearish bias, 269 put at 149x; but 70-score call flow says watch for a bounce off $281.56.
  • META — two-sided at $777.73; 750 put ($9.6M) vs 825 call ($33.9M).
  • MSFT — bullish, TRO-confirmed 525 call ($15.8M) above $497.58.
  • AMZN — bullish, 260 call $21.67M at 25.5x; spot $249.34.
  • GS — bearish, TRO-confirmed 920 put; spot $923.25 near 47-day lows.

Total unusual put notional: $409.0M across 10 sectors. Sectors with 🔴 Defensive signal have BOTH high PCR (>1.2) AND >$2M of unusual put buying — institutions are actively hedging there. 🟢 Risk-On means call-heavy with no defensive flow — the safest put-selling ground.

How to read the Sector Tape

The sector tape aggregates the daily option chain by GICS sector. For each sector it computes the put/call ratio (PCR) and the total notional of unusual put prints (contracts where today's volume exceeds existing open interest by 50%+). The signal tells you where institutions are positioning defensively vs. where they're comfortable being long.

  • PCR (put/call ratio) — put volume ÷ call volume (or OI). Above 1.0 = puts trade more than calls (defensive). Below 0.8 = call-heavy (risk-on). The OI version is more stable; the volume version is more reactive to today's flow.
  • UnusualPut$ — total notional ($ = volume × mid × 100) of put contracts where volume > 1.5× open interest AND notional > $50K. This is the UnusualWhales signal: new positions opening rather than existing ones trading hands. Large values = someone is paying up for protection.
  • Signal — derived from PCR + unusual notional. 🔴 Defensive (PCR > 1.2 AND > $2M unusual) = heavy hedging — be cautious selling puts there. 🟡 Caution = some defensive flow. 🟢 Risk-On (PCR < 0.9, < $500K unusual) = calmest put-selling ground. ⚪ Neutral = mixed.

How to use it with ChainScan

The sector tape is the weather report above the single-name scanner. A bull-put-spread TAKE verdict on a name in a 🟢 Risk-On sector is high confidence — the tape confirms nobody's hedging there. A TAKE verdict on a name in a 🔴 Defensive sector should be downgraded: institutions are actively buying puts at the strikes you'd be selling, so either skip the trade, go further OTM (0.15 delta instead of 0.20), or shorten DTE to get ahead of the hedging flow. The ETF block (SPY/QQQ/IWM) gives the macro read — if QQQ is 🔴 Defensive, every tech name on the ChainScan table carries extra risk.

The top-prints table

Shows the 15 largest unusual put prints across all sectors, sorted by notional. This is where you see the actual whale activity: which symbol, which strike, which expiration, and how much money is behind it. A single $50M put print could be one institution hedging a long book (not necessarily bearish) or a fresh directional bet. When you see clusters across multiple strikes and names in the same sector, the institutional interpretation gets stronger.

🎯 Smart Money — directional-bet detection (both sides)

Two tables surface institutional directional bets. 🐻 Bearish bets (unusual put activity): names where put buying looks like a coordinated bear bet. 🐂 Bullish bets (unusual call activity): names where call buying looks like a coordinated bull bet. The conviction score separates directional bets from dispersed hedging using three features: (1) V/OI breadth — fraction of notional in contracts with V/OI > 20×, discounted by sample size; (2) strike concentration — fraction of notional in the dominant strike cluster (within 2% of spot); (3) notional scale — saturates at $5M. Score ≥70 = strong directional bet, ≥50 = moderate, ≥30 = some clustering.

The TRO columns (D/W/M) show the trend on daily/weekly/monthly timeframes. ✅ TRO Confirmed: for bearish bets, daily AND weekly both ▼ (downtrend); for bullish bets, daily AND weekly both ▲ (uptrend). The highest-conviction signals are bets in the direction TRO already confirms. A high score with TRO NOT confirmed means the option market may be ahead of the trend indicator — an early warning.

Example (bearish): LLY on 2026-07-29 had $27.7M unusual puts, V/OI up to 284×, concentrated in 5 strikes within $20 of spot, placed at the top of a 5-day rally. TRO daily red since July 15. LLY fell 4% the next day. Example (bullish): AMD on 2026-07-29 had $28M unusual calls at the bottom of a 22% crash week ($543→$425). The calls were concentrated in Aug 7 expiry (through earnings Aug 4). AMD bounced +15% the next day on a Microsoft-led chip rebound and a $14B Core Scientific deal. Both sides of the tape are predictive.

Caveat: open interest lags one day (reported from the previous close). Volume can be driven by a single large order as easily as by distributed flow. Hedging is not the same as bearish — a put buyer may be insuring a long position, not speculating. Use the tape as a confirming colour on top of technical analysis, not as a standalone forecast.
