Daily Tape Analysis — 2026-10-07
The Story
Indexes rolled over — SPY -0.25%, QQQ -0.30%, IWM -1.30% — with defensive put flow in all three index ETFs (SPY PCR_v 1.92, QQQ 1.61, IWM 3.54). Yesterday's bearish book paid off: IWM, TSLA, NVDA, AMD, and GS all fell, while the bullish book mostly failed (META -2.45%, CAT -5.78%, TSLA, ORCL, AMD all declined). The tape is stacking index puts and single-name hedges — META $40.3M put on the 800 strike, AMD $15.6M puts at 144x V/OI — even as the ETFs sit near 56-day highs. Small caps are the weakest link: IWM is -6.24% over 56 days and TRO-confirmed. The one name fighting the tape is CAT — top bullish conviction (score 72) after a -5.78% flush.
Bearish Bets to Watch
IWM (score 55) — $31.2M puts, max V/OI 1054x, PCR 3.54, TRO ✅. Spot 277.67 (-1.30% today, -6.24% over 56 days). The 268 Nov-20 put ($10.0M) and a 299 Oct-16 print at 587.6x V/OI ($9.9M) anchor the position — the cleanest bearish setup on the board.
AMD (score 59) — $15.6M puts across 48 contracts, max 144x, clustered on 640/645 Oct-16 expiries. But $34.1M in calls (45x, TRO ✅) also printed today, so the book is split with calls actually larger. Spot 645.90, -0.56% today after a +18.95% 56-day run.
META (score 41) — single $40.3M put on the 800 Dec-18 strike (13.6x V/OI), the largest individual print on the tape, plus $3.4M each on 670 and 655. META fell -2.45% today; the put notional dwarfs the $6.9M in bullish calls even though those carry TRO ✅.
TSLA (score 56) — $15.6M puts but 0 contracts above 20x V/OI (max 6x), with the largest line a 375 Oct-16 put at just 1.7x. Heavy volume on low V/OI reads as position rotation, not fresh conviction. -0.79% today, -0.65% over 57 days.
SPY / QQQ (grouped) — index hedges, not single-name bets. SPY $79.4M puts (301x), QQQ $73.6M (221x), both defensive PCR, both near 56-day highs but flat-to-down today. QQQ's 740 Nov-20 put ($14.5M) and SPY's 736 Nov-20 ($14.1M) are the anchor lines.
Bullish Bets to Watch
CAT (score 72) — top conviction overall. $6.7M calls, 338x V/OI, clustered 845–865 Nov-13. But CAT fell -5.78% today (the worst single-name move on the board) and yesterday's bullish bet failed outright — this is a dip-buy against a falling knife. No TRO confirmation.
META (score 61) — $6.9M calls, 96x, TRO ✅, but the stock fell -2.45% today and the $40.3M put is the bigger position. The near-dated call cluster (720/722/738) reads as a rebound bet that did not print today.
TXN (score 59) — $3.04M on the 302 Oct-23 call at 3728x V/OI (OI of 1, a brand-new line), plus 300/310 strikes. TXN fell -2.82% today but is +4.44% since Oct-2; the 302 strike sits +4.7% OTM. No TRO confirmation.
AMD (score 55) — $34.1M calls, 45x, TRO ✅, led by $23.2M on the 640 Oct-30 call (12.7x). Calls outnumber puts roughly 2:1, which contradicts the bearish score of 59. -0.56% today, +18.95% over 56 days.
INTU (score 54) — $3.56M on the 260 Oct-16 call at 6.5x V/OI, deep ITM (spot 297.18), TRO ✅. INTU rose +2.55% today and +2.43% over 56 days; the deep-ITM call reads as a leveraged long, and yesterday's bullish read was confirmed by price.
The Oracle Read
The tape is hedging, not panicking — index puts dominate while single-name conviction is split. IWM is the most TRO-confirmed bearish signal, and its 268/299 put cluster points to continued small-cap downside toward 268–270. CAT is the lone contrarian long — 338x V/OI calls after a -5.78% flush — but with no TRO confirmation and a failed bet yesterday, it only validates on a reclaim of ~822.
Names to Watch at the Open
- IWM — bearish — 277.67 spot, watch 268 support; $10.0M of Nov-20 268 puts, TRO ✅.
- CAT — long reversal — 813.84 after -5.78%; $6.7M calls at 845–865 need a reclaim of ~822.
- META — bearish — 721.08; $40.3M put on the 800 Dec-18 strike, watch for a fade below 720.
- AMD — two-sided — 645.90; $34.1M calls vs $15.6M puts, 640 is the line.
- TXN — long — 288.93; 3728x V/OI on 302 calls needs a move toward 300–302.

Total unusual put notional: $146.4M across 10 sectors. Sectors with 🔴 Defensive signal have BOTH high PCR (>1.2) AND >$2M of unusual put buying — institutions are actively hedging there. 🟢 Risk-On means call-heavy with no defensive flow — the safest put-selling ground.
How to read the Sector Tape
The sector tape aggregates the daily option chain by GICS sector. For each sector it computes the put/call ratio (PCR) and the total notional of unusual put prints (contracts where today's volume exceeds existing open interest by 50%+). The signal tells you where institutions are positioning defensively vs. where they're comfortable being long.
- PCR (put/call ratio) — put volume ÷ call volume (or OI). Above 1.0 = puts trade more than calls (defensive). Below 0.8 = call-heavy (risk-on). The OI version is more stable; the volume version is more reactive to today's flow.
- UnusualPut$ — total notional ($ = volume × mid × 100) of put contracts where volume > 1.5× open interest AND notional > $50K. This is the UnusualWhales signal: new positions opening rather than existing ones trading hands. Large values = someone is paying up for protection.
- Signal — derived from PCR + unusual notional. 🔴 Defensive (PCR > 1.2 AND > $2M unusual) = heavy hedging — be cautious selling puts there. 🟡 Caution = some defensive flow. 🟢 Risk-On (PCR < 0.9, < $500K unusual) = calmest put-selling ground. ⚪ Neutral = mixed.
How to use it with ChainScan
The sector tape is the weather report above the single-name scanner. A bull-put-spread TAKE verdict on a name in a 🟢 Risk-On sector is high confidence — the tape confirms nobody's hedging there. A TAKE verdict on a name in a 🔴 Defensive sector should be downgraded: institutions are actively buying puts at the strikes you'd be selling, so either skip the trade, go further OTM (0.15 delta instead of 0.20), or shorten DTE to get ahead of the hedging flow. The ETF block (SPY/QQQ/IWM) gives the macro read — if QQQ is 🔴 Defensive, every tech name on the ChainScan table carries extra risk.
The top-prints table
Shows the 15 largest unusual put prints across all sectors, sorted by notional. This is where you see the actual whale activity: which symbol, which strike, which expiration, and how much money is behind it. A single $50M put print could be one institution hedging a long book (not necessarily bearish) or a fresh directional bet. When you see clusters across multiple strikes and names in the same sector, the institutional interpretation gets stronger.
🎯 Smart Money — directional-bet detection (both sides)
Two tables surface institutional directional bets. 🐻 Bearish bets (unusual put activity): names where put buying looks like a coordinated bear bet. 🐂 Bullish bets (unusual call activity): names where call buying looks like a coordinated bull bet. The conviction score separates directional bets from dispersed hedging using three features: (1) V/OI breadth — fraction of notional in contracts with V/OI > 20×, discounted by sample size; (2) strike concentration — fraction of notional in the dominant strike cluster (within 2% of spot); (3) notional scale — saturates at $5M. Score ≥70 = strong directional bet, ≥50 = moderate, ≥30 = some clustering.
The TRO columns (D/W/M) show the trend on daily/weekly/monthly timeframes. ✅ TRO Confirmed: for bearish bets, daily AND weekly both ▼ (downtrend); for bullish bets, daily AND weekly both ▲ (uptrend). The highest-conviction signals are bets in the direction TRO already confirms. A high score with TRO NOT confirmed means the option market may be ahead of the trend indicator — an early warning.
Example (bearish): LLY on 2026-07-29 had $27.7M unusual puts, V/OI up to 284×, concentrated in 5 strikes within $20 of spot, placed at the top of a 5-day rally. TRO daily red since July 15. LLY fell 4% the next day. Example (bullish): AMD on 2026-07-29 had $28M unusual calls at the bottom of a 22% crash week ($543→$425). The calls were concentrated in Aug 7 expiry (through earnings Aug 4). AMD bounced +15% the next day on a Microsoft-led chip rebound and a $14B Core Scientific deal. Both sides of the tape are predictive.
Caveat: open interest lags one day (reported from the previous close). Volume can be driven by a single large order as easily as by distributed flow. Hedging is not the same as bearish — a put buyer may be insuring a long position, not speculating. Use the tape as a confirming colour on top of technical analysis, not as a standalone forecast.
