Daily Tape Analysis — 2026-09-16
The Story
Broad selloff: SPY -0.48% to 754.05 and QQQ -0.04% to 705.13, with financials and energy leading the damage (GS -3.61%, USB -3.99%, AXP -3.58%, COP -6.14%, XOM -3.49%). Megacap semis bucked the tape — INTC +4.17%, SMCI +3.41%, AMD +1.69%, NVDA +0.84%. Yesterday's bearish bets paid where they were single-name: C -2.35%, AMZN -0.99%, CVX -2.83% all fell, while META and NVDA put bets failed. Yesterday's bullish META and AMD calls were right (+0.51%, +1.69%); GS and GOOGL call bets were wrong. The shift today is fresh put flow into T ($7.0M, 314x max V/OI, after two days of zero) layered on top of heavy index put buying ($165.3M SPY, $54.3M IWM).
Bearish Bets to Watch
T (score 67) — the highest conviction name today. $7.0M unusual puts across 9 contracts, led by the 28-strike 10/09 puts ($3.56M at 112.6x V/OI) and the 30-strike at 313.5x ($1.35M). Spot fell 3.14% today to $25.89 after a +17.15% run from $22.10 on 7/21. No TRO confirmation yet.
IWM (score 63) — $54.3M puts across 31 contracts, concentrated in the 271/272/273 10/16 strikes ($41.5M combined; 272 at 110.3x V/OI). Spot has slipped five straight sessions to 283.93 (-0.47% today) and the ETF PCR_v sits at 3.39, defensive. No TRO, and the same name also has $16.6M of unusual calls — two-sided flow, not a pure bear.
META (score 52) — $26.1M puts across 67 contracts with a 6-strike cluster at 675–680, max 202x (678 9/25). Yesterday's bullish call bet was right (+0.51%) while the put bet failed; today the put side is bigger. No TRO confirmation.
SPY / QQQ (scores 49 / 51) — $165.3M and $41.9M of unusual puts. SPY's largest print is the 745 9/25 put at $40.4M (3.6x V/OI), plus the 730 9/25 at 41.3x ($17.3M); QQQ's is the 700 9/25 at $10.75M. Both names also carry large call books ($138.2M SPY at 966x, $69.3M QQQ), so this reads as index hedging, not directional conviction. SPY PCR_v 1.49 and IWM 3.39 both register defensive.
GS (score 39, TRO ✅) — $5.7M unusual puts across 3 strikes, TRO-confirmed, and the direction is already working: spot -3.61% today to 940.60, a 41-day low. The put flow validates the prior bearish signal; watch whether 940 breaks on follow-through.
Bullish Bets to Watch
GS (score 63) — $8.4M unusual calls led by the 905/910 9/25 weeklies (98.2x and 82.2x V/OI, $2.08M and $1.94M). Spot fell 3.61% today to 940.60, a 41-day low, so this is a bounce bet running against the TRO-confirmed put side. Two camps are positioned opposite directions in the same zone.
ADBE (score 58) — $3.5M calls, with the 262 9/25 at 59.6x V/OI ($0.79M) and 260/265 10/30 adds ($1.34M, $1.21M). Spot -2.81% today to 250.54 after a +5.26% pop on 9/14 and two straight down days. No TRO confirmation.
AXP (score 56) — $1.4M calls, max 774x on the 322 9/25 strike (2,322 contracts vs OI of 3, $0.39M). Spot -3.58% today to 312.66, its 41-day low. An aggressive short-dated bounce bet with no TRO confirmation.
AMD (score 48, TRO ✅) / INTC (score 42) — semis are the one bullish pocket with both flow and price. AMD: $19.5M calls at 267x max V/OI, led by the 520 10/2 ($9.8M), TRO-confirmed, spot +1.69% to 512.78. INTC: $6.0M calls at 109x, spot +4.17% to 101.17, the day's biggest megacap gainer. AMD's put book ($18.7M) is nearly as large, so the TRO stamp sits on a name with two-way flow.
TSLA (score 48) — $58.9M calls, the largest single-name call notional, led by the 360 10/2 at $20.6M (7.5x V/OI). Spot +0.43% to 358.13. The 360 line is the battleground: $4.9M of 9/25 puts sit on the same strike.
The Oracle Read
The index tape is defensive — SPY and IWM put notional ($165.3M, $54.3M) dwarfs single-name bearish bets, with both ETFs' PCRs in defensive territory. The freshest directional signal is T (first $7.0M put day after two zero days), and the GS put TRO is already paying. AMD's TRO-confirmed calls plus INTC's +4.17% argue semis stay bid — this looks like rotation within the tape, not a broad unwind.
Names to Watch at the Open
- T — bearish below $25.89; 30 10/9 puts at 313.5x V/OI say the run from $22.10 is topping.
- GS — bearish TRO ✅, held 940.60 (41-day low); $5.7M puts already moving the right direction.
- AMD — bullish TRO ✅, +1.69%; 520 10/2 calls ($9.8M) target a push through 520.
- TSLA — two-sided at 360; $20.6M 10/2 calls vs $4.9M 9/25 puts on the same strike.
- IWM — 283.93 pivot; $54.3M puts vs $16.6M calls, watch the 271–273 10/16 put wall.

Total unusual put notional: $144.8M across 10 sectors. Sectors with 🔴 Defensive signal have BOTH high PCR (>1.2) AND >$2M of unusual put buying — institutions are actively hedging there. 🟢 Risk-On means call-heavy with no defensive flow — the safest put-selling ground.
How to read the Sector Tape
The sector tape aggregates the daily option chain by GICS sector. For each sector it computes the put/call ratio (PCR) and the total notional of unusual put prints (contracts where today's volume exceeds existing open interest by 50%+). The signal tells you where institutions are positioning defensively vs. where they're comfortable being long.
- PCR (put/call ratio) — put volume ÷ call volume (or OI). Above 1.0 = puts trade more than calls (defensive). Below 0.8 = call-heavy (risk-on). The OI version is more stable; the volume version is more reactive to today's flow.
- UnusualPut$ — total notional ($ = volume × mid × 100) of put contracts where volume > 1.5× open interest AND notional > $50K. This is the UnusualWhales signal: new positions opening rather than existing ones trading hands. Large values = someone is paying up for protection.
- Signal — derived from PCR + unusual notional. 🔴 Defensive (PCR > 1.2 AND > $2M unusual) = heavy hedging — be cautious selling puts there. 🟡 Caution = some defensive flow. 🟢 Risk-On (PCR < 0.9, < $500K unusual) = calmest put-selling ground. ⚪ Neutral = mixed.
How to use it with ChainScan
The sector tape is the weather report above the single-name scanner. A bull-put-spread TAKE verdict on a name in a 🟢 Risk-On sector is high confidence — the tape confirms nobody's hedging there. A TAKE verdict on a name in a 🔴 Defensive sector should be downgraded: institutions are actively buying puts at the strikes you'd be selling, so either skip the trade, go further OTM (0.15 delta instead of 0.20), or shorten DTE to get ahead of the hedging flow. The ETF block (SPY/QQQ/IWM) gives the macro read — if QQQ is 🔴 Defensive, every tech name on the ChainScan table carries extra risk.
The top-prints table
Shows the 15 largest unusual put prints across all sectors, sorted by notional. This is where you see the actual whale activity: which symbol, which strike, which expiration, and how much money is behind it. A single $50M put print could be one institution hedging a long book (not necessarily bearish) or a fresh directional bet. When you see clusters across multiple strikes and names in the same sector, the institutional interpretation gets stronger.
🎯 Smart Money — directional-bet detection (both sides)
Two tables surface institutional directional bets. 🐻 Bearish bets (unusual put activity): names where put buying looks like a coordinated bear bet. 🐂 Bullish bets (unusual call activity): names where call buying looks like a coordinated bull bet. The conviction score separates directional bets from dispersed hedging using three features: (1) V/OI breadth — fraction of notional in contracts with V/OI > 20×, discounted by sample size; (2) strike concentration — fraction of notional in the dominant strike cluster (within 2% of spot); (3) notional scale — saturates at $5M. Score ≥70 = strong directional bet, ≥50 = moderate, ≥30 = some clustering.
The TRO columns (D/W/M) show the trend on daily/weekly/monthly timeframes. ✅ TRO Confirmed: for bearish bets, daily AND weekly both ▼ (downtrend); for bullish bets, daily AND weekly both ▲ (uptrend). The highest-conviction signals are bets in the direction TRO already confirms. A high score with TRO NOT confirmed means the option market may be ahead of the trend indicator — an early warning.
Example (bearish): LLY on 2026-07-29 had $27.7M unusual puts, V/OI up to 284×, concentrated in 5 strikes within $20 of spot, placed at the top of a 5-day rally. TRO daily red since July 15. LLY fell 4% the next day. Example (bullish): AMD on 2026-07-29 had $28M unusual calls at the bottom of a 22% crash week ($543→$425). The calls were concentrated in Aug 7 expiry (through earnings Aug 4). AMD bounced +15% the next day on a Microsoft-led chip rebound and a $14B Core Scientific deal. Both sides of the tape are predictive.
Caveat: open interest lags one day (reported from the previous close). Volume can be driven by a single large order as easily as by distributed flow. Hedging is not the same as bearish — a put buyer may be insuring a long position, not speculating. Use the tape as a confirming colour on top of technical analysis, not as a standalone forecast.
