Daily Tape Analysis — 2026-08-12

The Story

Markets edged higher with SPY +0.25%, QQQ +0.57%, and IWM +0.65%, but the tape tells a different story — all three index ETFs are flagged defensive with heavy put flow ($37.5M SPY, $26.7M QQQ, $26.1M IWM). Yesterday's conviction bets split down the middle: bearish TSLA (-1.61%), MSFT (-2.25%), and META (-3.39%) paid, while bullish AMD (+1.87%), ORCL (+5.30%), and NVDA (+3.06%) also worked. The standout today is Visa — $38.5M in unusual calls at 573x V/OI with TRO confirmation, the largest single-name bullish conviction on the board. Technology dominates both sides: $45.7M in unusual puts vs. massive call buying in AMD ($25M), CSCO ($5.7M), and IBM ($23.6M).

Bearish Bets to Watch

IWM (score 81) — $26.1M in unusual puts across 14 contracts, led by $14.7M at the 295 strike (317x V/OI, 2.6% OTM). Small caps have rallied +2.27% over 16 days and closed at $302.87, well above the put strikes. No TRO confirmation; yesterday's IWM bearish bet was wrong (+0.65%).

AVGO (score 70) — $11.4M in unusual puts, with $2.7M at the 422 strike (380x V/OI). The stock is essentially flat at $415.87 after a +7.76% 16-day run that peaked at $427.57 on Aug 7. No TRO confirmation; yesterday's AVGO bearish bet was flat (-0.03%).

SPY (score 62) — $37.5M in unusual puts, dominated by a single $23.7M print at the 670 strike (211x V/OI, 13.3% OTM, Oct 30 expiry). This is a deep tail hedge, not a directional bet. Unusual put flow has declined from $244M on Aug 5 to $37.5M today. No TRO confirmation.

GOOGL (score 44) — $4.5M in puts with TRO confirmation. The stock is down -1.88% over 16 days, falling from $380.41 on Aug 4 to $342.30 today. The $3.9M put print at the 345 strike (Oct 16) is slightly ITM. This bet is working and has TRO backing.

NVDA (score 39) — $16M in unusual puts but the stock surged +3.06% today to $224.11, its highest close in the 17-day window. The bearish flow is fighting the tape; yesterday's NVDA bearish bet was wrong (+3.06%). No TRO confirmation.

Bullish Bets to Watch

V (score 65) — $38.5M in unusual calls with TRO confirmation. Two massive prints: $15.7M at the 355 strike (67.7x V/OI) and $13.6M at the 360 strike (24.2x V/OI), both Oct 16 expiry. Stock is down -0.84% today at $359.48, sitting between the two strikes. This is the highest-conviction bullish bet on the board.

AMD (score 60) — $25M in unusual calls, led by $6.1M at the 520 strike (425x V/OI, 7.7% OTM, Sep 25) and $4.6M at the 540 strike (11.8% OTM, Sep 11). Stock +1.87% today at $482.85 but still down -11.08% over 16 days. No TRO confirmation; yesterday's AMD bullish bet was right (+1.87%).

AAPL (score 60) — $5.6M in unusual calls with 251x V/OI. The flow is concentrated in near-term Aug 21 strikes: $1M at 308 and $0.94M at 302. Stock is down -7.74% over 16 days to $302.20, making this a bounce play. No TRO confirmation; yesterday's AAPL bullish bet was wrong (-0.88%).

CSCO (score 51) — $5.7M in calls with TRO confirmation, but the stock fell -1.15% today to $119.05. Both sides are active: $2.3M in bearish puts (score 45) with strikes at 123-124. The tape is conflicted — calls have TRO but the stock is sliding from its Aug 10 peak of $122.61.

IBM (score 46) — $23.6M in calls at 1200x V/OI, the highest V/OI multiple on the board. Three Aug 21 strikes: $7.2M at 212, $6.8M at 208, and $5.6M at 205 — all deep ITM (10-13% below spot of $236). Stock -1.04% today but +11.57% over 16 days. No TRO confirmation.

The Oracle Read

Index hedges are the dominant macro signal — all three ETFs show persistent defensive put flow even as spot grinds higher, suggesting smart money is buying protection rather than chasing. Visa is the cleanest single-name setup: $38.5M in calls with TRO confirmation, concentrated in two October strikes bracketing current spot. The AMD/CSCO/IBM call cluster says tech isn't done, but the GOOGL TRO-confirmed bearish bet and heavy IWM/AVGO put flow argue for sector rotation, not a broad rally.

Total unusual put notional: $77.6M across 10 sectors. Sectors with 🔴 Defensive signal have BOTH high PCR (>1.2) AND >$2M of unusual put buying — institutions are actively hedging there. 🟢 Risk-On means call-heavy with no defensive flow — the safest put-selling ground.

How to read the Sector Tape

The sector tape aggregates the daily option chain by GICS sector. For each sector it computes the put/call ratio (PCR) and the total notional of unusual put prints (contracts where today's volume exceeds existing open interest by 50%+). The signal tells you where institutions are positioning defensively vs. where they're comfortable being long.

  • PCR (put/call ratio) — put volume ÷ call volume (or OI). Above 1.0 = puts trade more than calls (defensive). Below 0.8 = call-heavy (risk-on). The OI version is more stable; the volume version is more reactive to today's flow.
  • UnusualPut$ — total notional ($ = volume × mid × 100) of put contracts where volume > 1.5× open interest AND notional > $50K. This is the UnusualWhales signal: new positions opening rather than existing ones trading hands. Large values = someone is paying up for protection.
  • Signal — derived from PCR + unusual notional. 🔴 Defensive (PCR > 1.2 AND > $2M unusual) = heavy hedging — be cautious selling puts there. 🟡 Caution = some defensive flow. 🟢 Risk-On (PCR < 0.9, < $500K unusual) = calmest put-selling ground. ⚪ Neutral = mixed.

How to use it with ChainScan

The sector tape is the weather report above the single-name scanner. A bull-put-spread TAKE verdict on a name in a 🟢 Risk-On sector is high confidence — the tape confirms nobody's hedging there. A TAKE verdict on a name in a 🔴 Defensive sector should be downgraded: institutions are actively buying puts at the strikes you'd be selling, so either skip the trade, go further OTM (0.15 delta instead of 0.20), or shorten DTE to get ahead of the hedging flow. The ETF block (SPY/QQQ/IWM) gives the macro read — if QQQ is 🔴 Defensive, every tech name on the ChainScan table carries extra risk.

The top-prints table

Shows the 15 largest unusual put prints across all sectors, sorted by notional. This is where you see the actual whale activity: which symbol, which strike, which expiration, and how much money is behind it. A single $50M put print could be one institution hedging a long book (not necessarily bearish) or a fresh directional bet. When you see clusters across multiple strikes and names in the same sector, the institutional interpretation gets stronger.

🎯 Smart Money — directional-bet detection (both sides)

Two tables surface institutional directional bets. 🐻 Bearish bets (unusual put activity): names where put buying looks like a coordinated bear bet. 🐂 Bullish bets (unusual call activity): names where call buying looks like a coordinated bull bet. The conviction score separates directional bets from dispersed hedging using three features: (1) V/OI breadth — fraction of notional in contracts with V/OI > 20×, discounted by sample size; (2) strike concentration — fraction of notional in the dominant strike cluster (within 2% of spot); (3) notional scale — saturates at $5M. Score ≥70 = strong directional bet, ≥50 = moderate, ≥30 = some clustering.

The TRO columns (D/W/M) show the trend on daily/weekly/monthly timeframes. ✅ TRO Confirmed: for bearish bets, daily AND weekly both ▼ (downtrend); for bullish bets, daily AND weekly both ▲ (uptrend). The highest-conviction signals are bets in the direction TRO already confirms. A high score with TRO NOT confirmed means the option market may be ahead of the trend indicator — an early warning.

Example (bearish): LLY on 2026-07-29 had $27.7M unusual puts, V/OI up to 284×, concentrated in 5 strikes within $20 of spot, placed at the top of a 5-day rally. TRO daily red since July 15. LLY fell 4% the next day. Example (bullish): AMD on 2026-07-29 had $28M unusual calls at the bottom of a 22% crash week ($543→$425). The calls were concentrated in Aug 7 expiry (through earnings Aug 4). AMD bounced +15% the next day on a Microsoft-led chip rebound and a $14B Core Scientific deal. Both sides of the tape are predictive.

Caveat: open interest lags one day (reported from the previous close). Volume can be driven by a single large order as easily as by distributed flow. Hedging is not the same as bearish — a put buyer may be insuring a long position, not speculating. Use the tape as a confirming colour on top of technical analysis, not as a standalone forecast.
