Daily Tape Analysis — 2026-07-30

The Story

The market bounced hard: SPY +2.00%, QQQ +3.79%, IWM +1.40%. Yesterday's bullish call bets were right 7 out of 10 times — MSFT (+11.46%) and INTC (+11.97%) were the standout winners. Today's tape shows a massive post-earnings bet against MSFT continuing: $38.4M in unusual puts at 3,893x V/OI on the 450 strike, even as call buyers add $90.5M on the other side. The index tape is deeply two-sided — SPY has $116.7M in unusual puts and $225.3M in unusual calls simultaneously. Every sector except Energy, Real Estate, Utilities, and Materials is flagged "caution."

Bearish Bets to Watch

MSFT (score 53) — Post-earnings pop fade. $38.4M in unusual puts, concentrated at the 450 strike with 3,893x V/OI on the Aug 10 expiry and 645x on Aug 7. Spot closed at $448.62 after an +11.46% earnings surge. No TRO confirmation. Yesterday's bullish call bet at score 57 was dead right (+11.46%), but today's put buyers are betting the move is exhausted. The 450 strike is the line — above it, these puts are underwater.

CHTR (score 53) — Second consecutive day of unusual put activity, TRO confirmed. $0.7M in puts with 194x V/OI at the 143 strike. Spot $142.02, down -2.23% today. The 7-day trajectory is +11.11% but the last two days have turned lower. Yesterday's bearish bet was right. Small notional but high conviction — the 141-143 put cluster is tight.

TSLA (score 52) — TRO-confirmed bearish, $12.5M in unusual puts across 21 contracts. Spot bounced +3.95% to $307.47 today, making yesterday's bearish bet wrong. The 8-day trajectory is still -19.12% from $380.14. The 305 strike put wall ($6.1M notional, Aug 7) is the key level — if TSLA holds above it, these puts decay fast.

IWM (score 51) — $38.1M in unusual puts, 56x V/OI, concentrated at 276-278 strikes (5.0-5.7% OTM). Spot $292.67, up +1.40% today. Yesterday's bearish bet was wrong. The 7-day range is tight at 2.5% span ($288.63-$296.14). This is a range-bound small-cap bet — the puts need a break below 288 to pay.

AAPL (score 49) — $11.8M in unusual puts, 58x V/OI, third day of elevated activity (down from $24.7M yesterday). Spot cratered -5.90% to $318.46. Yesterday's bearish bet was right. The 8-day trajectory shows a sharp reversal from the $340 peak on July 28. Put activity is declining but still elevated — the momentum is with the bears.

Bullish Bets to Watch

QCOM (score 60) — Highest conviction bullish bet on the board. $4.1M in unusual calls, 444x V/OI at the 150 strike (Aug 14), with 156.8x at 160 (Aug 7). Spot $151.59, +2.43% today. Yesterday's bullish bet was right. The 7-day trajectory is -12.42% from $173.09, but the last two days are green. No TRO confirmation. The 150 strike is the floor — calls are ITM if spot holds.

SPY (score 59) — TRO-confirmed bullish. $225.3M in unusual calls, 267x V/OI, with the heaviest concentration at 705 (Aug 21, $41.2M) and 730 (Aug 7, $20.4M at 28.5x). Spot $742.59, +2.00% today. Yesterday's bullish bet was right. But the bearish side is also loaded: $116.7M in puts. This is a hedged long — the net call premium is dominant but the put book is real.

MSFT (score 52) — TRO-confirmed bullish. $90.5M in unusual calls, 646x V/OI, led by the 465 strike (Sep 4, $17.1M at 645.5x V/OI) and 470 (Aug 7, $10.8M at 39.6x). Spot $448.62. The call buyers are targeting 465-470, a +3.7% to +4.8% move from here. Both sides are loading up — $38.4M puts vs $90.5M calls — but the call notional is 2.4x larger.

UPS (score 50) — $0.9M in unusual calls, 499x V/OI, all clustered at the 103 strike across three expiries (Aug 7/14/21). Spot $105.25, +0.53% today. Yesterday's bullish bet was right. The 7-day trajectory is -9.21% from $115.92, but the 103 strike is holding as support. Small notional, clean setup — calls are ITM and the strike cluster is tight.

META (score 47) — $83.0M in unusual calls, 741x V/OI, concentrated at 530 (Aug 7, $7.0M at 465x) and 550 across multiple expiries. Spot $538.67, -1.04% today. Yesterday's bullish bet was wrong. The 7-day trajectory is -16.76% from $647.13. The 530 strike is ITM but barely — this is a bet that the selloff is over, and it hasn't confirmed yet.

The Oracle Read

The tape is conflicted at the index level — SPY and QQQ both show heavy two-way flow that reads more like hedging than direction. The cleanest signal is MSFT, where yesterday's call buyers nailed the +11.46% move and today's flow shows conviction on both sides: the bulls are targeting 465-470 while the bears are building a wall at 450. The QCOM 150 call cluster (444x V/OI) is the highest-conviction single-name bullish bet and the simplest to track — above 150 it works, below it doesn't. CHTR is the only TRO-confirmed bearish bet with a tight strike cluster and consecutive-day accumulation.

Names to Watch at the Open

  • MSFT — 450 is the battleground; $38.4M puts vs $90.5M calls. Above 450, the put wall breaks.
  • QCOM — Bullish score 60, 444x V/OI calls at 150. Needs to hold $150 to keep calls ITM.
  • CHTR — TRO-confirmed bearish, 194x V/OI, second day of put accumulation. Below 141 confirms.
  • TSLA — TRO-confirmed bearish but bounced +3.95%. The 305 put wall ($6.1M) is the pivot.
  • AAPL — -5.90% today, third day of elevated puts. Below $318, the July 28 peak looks like a top.

Total unusual put notional: $271.9M across 11 sectors. Sectors with 🔴 Defensive signal have BOTH high PCR (>1.2) AND >$2M of unusual put buying — institutions are actively hedging there. 🟢 Risk-On means call-heavy with no defensive flow — the safest put-selling ground.

How to read the Sector Tape

The sector tape aggregates the daily option chain by GICS sector. For each sector it computes the put/call ratio (PCR) and the total notional of unusual put prints (contracts where today's volume exceeds existing open interest by 50%+). The signal tells you where institutions are positioning defensively vs. where they're comfortable being long.

  • PCR (put/call ratio) — put volume ÷ call volume (or OI). Above 1.0 = puts trade more than calls (defensive). Below 0.8 = call-heavy (risk-on). The OI version is more stable; the volume version is more reactive to today's flow.
  • UnusualPut$ — total notional ($ = volume × mid × 100) of put contracts where volume > 1.5× open interest AND notional > $50K. This is the UnusualWhales signal: new positions opening rather than existing ones trading hands. Large values = someone is paying up for protection.
  • Signal — derived from PCR + unusual notional. 🔴 Defensive (PCR > 1.2 AND > $2M unusual) = heavy hedging — be cautious selling puts there. 🟡 Caution = some defensive flow. 🟢 Risk-On (PCR < 0.9, < $500K unusual) = calmest put-selling ground. ⚪ Neutral = mixed.

How to use it with ChainScan

The sector tape is the weather report above the single-name scanner. A bull-put-spread TAKE verdict on a name in a 🟢 Risk-On sector is high confidence — the tape confirms nobody's hedging there. A TAKE verdict on a name in a 🔴 Defensive sector should be downgraded: institutions are actively buying puts at the strikes you'd be selling, so either skip the trade, go further OTM (0.15 delta instead of 0.20), or shorten DTE to get ahead of the hedging flow. The ETF block (SPY/QQQ/IWM) gives the macro read — if QQQ is 🔴 Defensive, every tech name on the ChainScan table carries extra risk.

The top-prints table

Shows the 15 largest unusual put prints across all sectors, sorted by notional. This is where you see the actual whale activity: which symbol, which strike, which expiration, and how much money is behind it. A single $50M put print could be one institution hedging a long book (not necessarily bearish) or a fresh directional bet. When you see clusters across multiple strikes and names in the same sector, the institutional interpretation gets stronger.

🎯 Smart Money — directional-bet detection (both sides)

Two tables surface institutional directional bets. 🐻 Bearish bets (unusual put activity): names where put buying looks like a coordinated bear bet. 🐂 Bullish bets (unusual call activity): names where call buying looks like a coordinated bull bet. The conviction score separates directional bets from dispersed hedging using three features: (1) V/OI breadth — fraction of notional in contracts with V/OI > 20×, discounted by sample size; (2) strike concentration — fraction of notional in the dominant strike cluster (within 2% of spot); (3) notional scale — saturates at $5M. Score ≥70 = strong directional bet, ≥50 = moderate, ≥30 = some clustering.

The TRO columns (D/W/M) show the trend on daily/weekly/monthly timeframes. ✅ TRO Confirmed: for bearish bets, daily AND weekly both ▼ (downtrend); for bullish bets, daily AND weekly both ▲ (uptrend). The highest-conviction signals are bets in the direction TRO already confirms. A high score with TRO NOT confirmed means the option market may be ahead of the trend indicator — an early warning.

Example (bearish): LLY on 2026-07-29 had $27.7M unusual puts, V/OI up to 284×, concentrated in 5 strikes within $20 of spot, placed at the top of a 5-day rally. TRO daily red since July 15. LLY fell 4% the next day. Example (bullish): AMD on 2026-07-29 had $28M unusual calls at the bottom of a 22% crash week ($543→$425). The calls were concentrated in Aug 7 expiry (through earnings Aug 4). AMD bounced +15% the next day on a Microsoft-led chip rebound and a $14B Core Scientific deal. Both sides of the tape are predictive.

Caveat: open interest lags one day (reported from the previous close). Volume can be driven by a single large order as easily as by distributed flow. Hedging is not the same as bearish — a put buyer may be insuring a long position, not speculating. Use the tape as a confirming colour on top of technical analysis, not as a standalone forecast.
