Daily Tape Analysis — 2026-08-06
The Story
The tape turned broadly defensive with all three index ETFs flashing PCR > 1.0 (SPY 1.36, QQQ 1.20, IWM 3.25) and $166.3M in unusual puts across 63 names. Yesterday's conviction bets were a coin flip — 4 bearish bets paid off (IWM, GOOGL, ORCL, TSLA) while 3 failed (AVGO, MSFT, AMD), and bullish bets went 2-for-10 with only AVGO and MCD calls working. META bearish flow reignited to $13.6M after collapsing to $0.7M yesterday, while CAT calls exploded to $5.4M with a 500x V/OI print on the 790 strike. The market itself was flat (SPY -0.32%) but the options flow is positioning for a break lower.
Bearish Bets to Watch
META (score 68) — $13.6M in puts, led by a $10.9M print at the 585 strike (44x V/OI, Oct 16 expiry). This is a resurgence after bearish flow had dwindled to $0.7M yesterday from a $38.3M peak on July 30. The stock is down 8.8% over 12 days ($647→$590) and the 585 put is only 0.8% OTM — this is a bet the bounce stalls here. No TRO confirmation.
AVGO (score 59) — $7.3M puts across 20 contracts, 6 with V/OI > 20x. The 400 strike Sep 11 put saw 30.8x V/OI, and the 422 strike Aug 14 put hit 50.7x. Stock is up 9% over 12 days but bearish flow has held at $7M+ for two straight days. Yesterday's AVGO bearish bet was wrong (+0.54%), but they're doubling down. No TRO.
SPY (score 56) — $185M in puts, 8th consecutive day of unusual bearish flow. The standout is a $28.6M print at the 802 strike (1062x V/OI, Sep 18), 4.4% OTM. Flow is declining from yesterday's $244M peak but remains elevated. PCR at 1.36 confirms the defensive posture.
IWM (score 53) — $16.4M puts, PCR 3.25. The 298 strike Aug 28 put saw 48x V/OI ($2.5M). Yesterday's IWM bearish bet was right (-0.51%) and flow continues, though down from $28.8M. Small caps are the most defensive index on the board.
NVDA (score 48) — $44.9M puts, with a 3309x V/OI print on the 215 strike Aug 19 put ($4.1M). The 225 strike Aug 14 put also saw 25.7x V/OI ($7.4M). Stock is up 6.2% over 13 days but the put flow is concentrated in near-term, near-the-money strikes. Yesterday's bet was flat (-0.49%).
Bullish Bets to Watch
CAT (score 76) — $5.4M in calls, anchored by a single 500x V/OI print: 500 contracts at the 790 strike Sep 4 ($4.4M, 7.9% ITM). This is the highest conviction score on the board. Flow jumped from $1.3M yesterday. Stock is down 3.7% over 12 days and fell another 1.6% today — this is a dip-buy. No TRO confirmation.
UNH (score 59) — $2.6M calls, with the 412 strike Aug 14 call at 52.8x V/OI ($1.3M). Stock is down 6.9% over 12 days and fell 2.1% today. Yesterday's UNH bullish bet was wrong (-2.14%), but call flow increased from $1.8M to $2.6M. No TRO.
AMZN (score 55) — $8.9M calls, TRO confirmed. The 275 strike Aug 14 call leads at $4.8M (5.4x V/OI). Stock is up 9.6% over 13 days but has been flat the last two sessions. Yesterday's bullish bet was flat (-0.10%). Flow increased from $6.0M to $8.9M.
META (score 54) — $18.3M calls vs $13.6M puts. The 585 strike Oct 16 call saw $14.7M (4.2x V/OI), directly opposing the $10.9M put at the same strike. This is a battleground — both sides are committing real size at the same strike and expiry. No TRO.
AVGO (score 53) — $12.7M calls, TRO confirmed. The 425 strike Sep 4 call hit 18.8x V/OI ($6.1M). Both sides are active ($12.7M calls vs $7.3M puts), but the call flow is larger and TRO-confirmed. Yesterday's AVGO bullish bet was right (+0.54%).
The Oracle Read
The tape is defensive but not panicked — SPY put flow is declining from its peak and the broad market barely moved. META at 585 is the clearest battleground: $10.9M in puts vs $14.7M in calls at the same strike/expiry, with the bearish conviction score (68) edging out the bullish (54). CAT's 500x V/OI call is the cleanest directional signal but needs TRO confirmation. If SPY breaks below 765 (where $5.5M in puts sit), the defensive posture flips to outright bearish.
Names to Watch at the Open
- META — bearish bias, 585 put wall ($10.9M), both sides active at same strike
- CAT — bullish, 790 call (500x V/OI, $4.4M), highest conviction score on board
- SPY — defensive, 802 put ($28.6M single print), 765/770 cluster as near-term support
- AVGO — two-sided with bullish edge, 425 strike battle, TRO confirmed on calls
- NVDA — bearish, 3309x V/OI on 215 put, near-term strikes concentrated

Total unusual put notional: $166.3M across 11 sectors. Sectors with 🔴 Defensive signal have BOTH high PCR (>1.2) AND >$2M of unusual put buying — institutions are actively hedging there. 🟢 Risk-On means call-heavy with no defensive flow — the safest put-selling ground.
How to read the Sector Tape
The sector tape aggregates the daily option chain by GICS sector. For each sector it computes the put/call ratio (PCR) and the total notional of unusual put prints (contracts where today's volume exceeds existing open interest by 50%+). The signal tells you where institutions are positioning defensively vs. where they're comfortable being long.
- PCR (put/call ratio) — put volume ÷ call volume (or OI). Above 1.0 = puts trade more than calls (defensive). Below 0.8 = call-heavy (risk-on). The OI version is more stable; the volume version is more reactive to today's flow.
- UnusualPut$ — total notional ($ = volume × mid × 100) of put contracts where volume > 1.5× open interest AND notional > $50K. This is the UnusualWhales signal: new positions opening rather than existing ones trading hands. Large values = someone is paying up for protection.
- Signal — derived from PCR + unusual notional. 🔴 Defensive (PCR > 1.2 AND > $2M unusual) = heavy hedging — be cautious selling puts there. 🟡 Caution = some defensive flow. 🟢 Risk-On (PCR < 0.9, < $500K unusual) = calmest put-selling ground. ⚪ Neutral = mixed.
How to use it with ChainScan
The sector tape is the weather report above the single-name scanner. A bull-put-spread TAKE verdict on a name in a 🟢 Risk-On sector is high confidence — the tape confirms nobody's hedging there. A TAKE verdict on a name in a 🔴 Defensive sector should be downgraded: institutions are actively buying puts at the strikes you'd be selling, so either skip the trade, go further OTM (0.15 delta instead of 0.20), or shorten DTE to get ahead of the hedging flow. The ETF block (SPY/QQQ/IWM) gives the macro read — if QQQ is 🔴 Defensive, every tech name on the ChainScan table carries extra risk.
The top-prints table
Shows the 15 largest unusual put prints across all sectors, sorted by notional. This is where you see the actual whale activity: which symbol, which strike, which expiration, and how much money is behind it. A single $50M put print could be one institution hedging a long book (not necessarily bearish) or a fresh directional bet. When you see clusters across multiple strikes and names in the same sector, the institutional interpretation gets stronger.
🎯 Smart Money — directional-bet detection (both sides)
Two tables surface institutional directional bets. 🐻 Bearish bets (unusual put activity): names where put buying looks like a coordinated bear bet. 🐂 Bullish bets (unusual call activity): names where call buying looks like a coordinated bull bet. The conviction score separates directional bets from dispersed hedging using three features: (1) V/OI breadth — fraction of notional in contracts with V/OI > 20×, discounted by sample size; (2) strike concentration — fraction of notional in the dominant strike cluster (within 2% of spot); (3) notional scale — saturates at $5M. Score ≥70 = strong directional bet, ≥50 = moderate, ≥30 = some clustering.
The TRO columns (D/W/M) show the trend on daily/weekly/monthly timeframes. ✅ TRO Confirmed: for bearish bets, daily AND weekly both ▼ (downtrend); for bullish bets, daily AND weekly both ▲ (uptrend). The highest-conviction signals are bets in the direction TRO already confirms. A high score with TRO NOT confirmed means the option market may be ahead of the trend indicator — an early warning.
Example (bearish): LLY on 2026-07-29 had $27.7M unusual puts, V/OI up to 284×, concentrated in 5 strikes within $20 of spot, placed at the top of a 5-day rally. TRO daily red since July 15. LLY fell 4% the next day. Example (bullish): AMD on 2026-07-29 had $28M unusual calls at the bottom of a 22% crash week ($543→$425). The calls were concentrated in Aug 7 expiry (through earnings Aug 4). AMD bounced +15% the next day on a Microsoft-led chip rebound and a $14B Core Scientific deal. Both sides of the tape are predictive.
Caveat: open interest lags one day (reported from the previous close). Volume can be driven by a single large order as easily as by distributed flow. Hedging is not the same as bearish — a put buyer may be insuring a long position, not speculating. Use the tape as a confirming colour on top of technical analysis, not as a standalone forecast.
