Daily Tape Analysis — 2026-08-03
The Story
The market ripped higher: SPY +1.53%, QQQ +2.09%, IWM +1.84%. Yesterday's bearish bets were a rout — 7 of 10 failed, with META (+6.03%), AMZN (+4.66%), and MSFT (+5.26%) crushing put holders. Bullish bets fared far better: 7 of 10 paid off, led by GOOG (+4.44%) and MSFT. Today's tape shows a split personality — massive call accumulation in mega-cap tech (MSFT $112M, NVDA $34.9M, GOOG $16.5M) alongside surging index put activity (SPY $172M, up from $130M yesterday; IWM $42.1M). The index puts read more as hedging against an extended rally than directional conviction, since every index bearish bet from yesterday was wrong.
Bearish Bets to Watch
GOOGL (score 59) — $12.5M in unusual puts, the highest conviction bearish bet on the board. The headline print is $7.6M at the 425 strike (747x V/OI, -13.8% OTM), a deep downside wager. But the stock is up 5.18% today and 7.07% over 9 days — no TRO confirmation, and the spot trajectory is working against this bet.
IWM (score 55) — $42.1M in puts across 45 contracts, with a 697x V/OI max and 5-strike cluster. The $10M print at 279 strike and $7.9M at 282 (71.5x V/OI) anchor the position. Yesterday's IWM bearish bet (score 73) was wrong as the ETF rallied 1.84%. No TRO confirmation today.
SPY (score 55) — $172M in puts across 153 contracts, the largest bearish notional on the tape. The 782 strike print at 4529x V/OI ($11.4M) and 780 strike at 481.7x V/OI ($6.8M) are extreme outliers. But yesterday's SPY bearish bet (score 50, $130.2M) was wrong as SPY gained 1.53%. This looks like portfolio hedging, not directional conviction.
TSLA (score 50) — $5.5M in puts, TRO confirmed. The 320 strike at 182x V/OI is the standout. Stock rallied 4.05% today but remains down 15.27% over 10 days from $380. The TRO confirmation and the multi-day downtrend give this bet more weight than the single-day bounce suggests.
CAT (score 46) — $6.7M in puts, TRO confirmed. The 770 strike put at 32.3x V/OI ($2.55M, +7.3% OTM) is the key position. Stock is up 2.02% today but still down 6.7% over 9 days after the July 29 crash (-10.33%). TRO confirmation supports the bearish thesis despite today's bounce.
Bullish Bets to Watch
MSFT (score 70) — The strongest signal on the entire tape. $112M in bullish calls, TRO confirmed, led by an $82.2M single print at the 510 strike (240.6x V/OI, +4.6% OTM). Stock is up 22.27% in 10 days and 5.26% today alone. Yesterday's MSFT bullish bet (score 41) was right. The 520 strike at 20.7x V/OI ($2.1M) and 530 strike at 8.2x V/OI ($2.2M) add upside extension bets.
AAPL (score 54) — $21.8M in calls with a 1340x V/OI max, the highest V/OI ratio among bullish bets. The 310 strike at 1340x V/OI ($1.1M) and 308 strike at 357.1x V/OI ($1.7M) are aggressive upside wagers. But the stock fell 1.61% today and is down 7.33% over 10 days — yesterday's AAPL bullish bet (score 56, $53.8M) was wrong. This is a contrarian call bet into weakness.
AVGO (score 51) — $9.1M in calls with extreme V/OI ratios: 1006x at the 420 strike ($1.8M) and 669x at the 430 strike ($2.9M), both +7-10% OTM. Stock is up 1.06% today and 1.65% over 9 days. No TRO confirmation, but the V/OI extremes signal conviction.
GOOG (score 50) — $16.5M in calls, TRO confirmed. The 390 strike at 42.1x V/OI ($4M, +5% OTM) and 395 strike at 26.9x V/OI ($1.7M) are the key positions. Stock rallied 4.44% today and 6.69% over 9 days. Yesterday's GOOG bullish bet (score 59) was right. TRO confirmation plus momentum makes this one of the cleaner bullish setups.
NVDA (score 50) — $34.9M in calls, second-largest bullish notional after MSFT. The $15.1M print at the 180 strike (26.4x V/OI) is deep ITM (-12.9%), suggesting a large position roll or synthetic long. Stock is up 2.98% today and flat (+0.31%) over 10 days after recovering from the $189 low.
The Oracle Read
MSFT is the cleanest signal — $112M in calls with TRO confirmation, an $82.2M anchor print, and the stock already proving the thesis with a 22% 10-day run. The index put accumulation (SPY $172M, IWM $42.1M) is likely hedging, not direction — every index bearish bet from yesterday failed. The most interesting tension is GOOGL: the highest bearish score (59) on a stock that's ripping higher, suggesting either a well-timed top-call or a bet that's about to get steamrolled.
Names to Watch at the Open
- MSFT ↑ — $82.2M call at 510 strike, score 70, TRO confirmed, 22% 10-day run
- GOOGL — highest bearish score (59) vs stock up 5.18% today; 425 put at 747x V/OI is the battleground
- AAPL ↑ — $21.8M calls at 1340x V/OI into a falling stock (-7.33% over 10 days); contrarian setup
- SPY — $172M puts vs $182M calls; 760-782 zone is the put wall, 775-785 is the call target
- TSLA ↓ — TRO-confirmed puts, score 50, stock still down 15% from July 21 despite today's 4% bounce

Total unusual put notional: $187.6M across 11 sectors. Sectors with 🔴 Defensive signal have BOTH high PCR (>1.2) AND >$2M of unusual put buying — institutions are actively hedging there. 🟢 Risk-On means call-heavy with no defensive flow — the safest put-selling ground.
How to read the Sector Tape
The sector tape aggregates the daily option chain by GICS sector. For each sector it computes the put/call ratio (PCR) and the total notional of unusual put prints (contracts where today's volume exceeds existing open interest by 50%+). The signal tells you where institutions are positioning defensively vs. where they're comfortable being long.
- PCR (put/call ratio) — put volume ÷ call volume (or OI). Above 1.0 = puts trade more than calls (defensive). Below 0.8 = call-heavy (risk-on). The OI version is more stable; the volume version is more reactive to today's flow.
- UnusualPut$ — total notional ($ = volume × mid × 100) of put contracts where volume > 1.5× open interest AND notional > $50K. This is the UnusualWhales signal: new positions opening rather than existing ones trading hands. Large values = someone is paying up for protection.
- Signal — derived from PCR + unusual notional. 🔴 Defensive (PCR > 1.2 AND > $2M unusual) = heavy hedging — be cautious selling puts there. 🟡 Caution = some defensive flow. 🟢 Risk-On (PCR < 0.9, < $500K unusual) = calmest put-selling ground. ⚪ Neutral = mixed.
How to use it with ChainScan
The sector tape is the weather report above the single-name scanner. A bull-put-spread TAKE verdict on a name in a 🟢 Risk-On sector is high confidence — the tape confirms nobody's hedging there. A TAKE verdict on a name in a 🔴 Defensive sector should be downgraded: institutions are actively buying puts at the strikes you'd be selling, so either skip the trade, go further OTM (0.15 delta instead of 0.20), or shorten DTE to get ahead of the hedging flow. The ETF block (SPY/QQQ/IWM) gives the macro read — if QQQ is 🔴 Defensive, every tech name on the ChainScan table carries extra risk.
The top-prints table
Shows the 15 largest unusual put prints across all sectors, sorted by notional. This is where you see the actual whale activity: which symbol, which strike, which expiration, and how much money is behind it. A single $50M put print could be one institution hedging a long book (not necessarily bearish) or a fresh directional bet. When you see clusters across multiple strikes and names in the same sector, the institutional interpretation gets stronger.
🎯 Smart Money — directional-bet detection (both sides)
Two tables surface institutional directional bets. 🐻 Bearish bets (unusual put activity): names where put buying looks like a coordinated bear bet. 🐂 Bullish bets (unusual call activity): names where call buying looks like a coordinated bull bet. The conviction score separates directional bets from dispersed hedging using three features: (1) V/OI breadth — fraction of notional in contracts with V/OI > 20×, discounted by sample size; (2) strike concentration — fraction of notional in the dominant strike cluster (within 2% of spot); (3) notional scale — saturates at $5M. Score ≥70 = strong directional bet, ≥50 = moderate, ≥30 = some clustering.
The TRO columns (D/W/M) show the trend on daily/weekly/monthly timeframes. ✅ TRO Confirmed: for bearish bets, daily AND weekly both ▼ (downtrend); for bullish bets, daily AND weekly both ▲ (uptrend). The highest-conviction signals are bets in the direction TRO already confirms. A high score with TRO NOT confirmed means the option market may be ahead of the trend indicator — an early warning.
Example (bearish): LLY on 2026-07-29 had $27.7M unusual puts, V/OI up to 284×, concentrated in 5 strikes within $20 of spot, placed at the top of a 5-day rally. TRO daily red since July 15. LLY fell 4% the next day. Example (bullish): AMD on 2026-07-29 had $28M unusual calls at the bottom of a 22% crash week ($543→$425). The calls were concentrated in Aug 7 expiry (through earnings Aug 4). AMD bounced +15% the next day on a Microsoft-led chip rebound and a $14B Core Scientific deal. Both sides of the tape are predictive.
Caveat: open interest lags one day (reported from the previous close). Volume can be driven by a single large order as easily as by distributed flow. Hedging is not the same as bearish — a put buyer may be insuring a long position, not speculating. Use the tape as a confirming colour on top of technical analysis, not as a standalone forecast.
