Daily Tape Analysis — 2026-08-05

The Story

The market paused after a multi-day rally: SPY slipped 0.14%, QQQ 0.56%, IWM 0.64%. Yesterday's bearish bets were right 6 of 10 times — GOOGL dropped 4.55%, AMZN 1.72%, MSFT 1.45% — while bullish bets failed 5 of 10, with only LLY (+4.64%) and MCD (+2.10%) paying off. Today the tape turned decisively defensive: SPY put notional hit $244.4M (8,500x V/OI on the 802 strike), QQQ $102.8M, and IWM $28.8M — all three index ETFs rank in the top 5 bearish bets. AVGO surged to the #1 bearish conviction name with $7.4M in puts at 479x V/OI, concentrated at the 420-425 strikes expiring next week.

Bearish Bets to Watch

AVGO (score 78) — $7.4M in unusual puts across 17 contracts, with 479x V/OI on the 422 strike and 351x on the 425 strike, both expiring 8/14. Spot closed at $418.49 (+0.87%), so these are near-the-money. Unusual put notional doubled from $3.3M yesterday to $7.4M today. No TRO confirmation.

SPY (score 57) — $244.4M in unusual puts, the largest single-day total in the 8-day escalation that started 7/28. The standout print is $28.3M at the 802 strike (Sep 18) with 8,500x V/OI — a single trade against 1 contract of open interest. PCR_v of 1.67 and PCR_o of 1.32 both signal defensive positioning. Yesterday's SPY bearish bet was flat (-0.14%).

QQQ (score 57) — $102.8M in unusual puts across 157 contracts, with 562x V/OI. The 715 strike (8/21) saw $11.0M and the 720 strike (8/14) saw $8.2M at 27.5x V/OI. Put notional has climbed from $41.3M on 8/3 to $102.8M today. Yesterday's QQQ bearish bet was right (-0.56%).

NVDA (score 46) — $58.8M in puts at 995x V/OI, concentrated at the 190 strike (Sep 4) for $11.4M at 20.4x V/OI. Spot closed at $219.86 (+2.99%), so yesterday's bearish bet was wrong. But NVDA also shows $90.2M in bullish calls — the tape is split, with both sides placing large bets.

WMT (score 37) — a single massive print: $16.4M in puts at the 119 strike (8/21) with 10,474x V/OI — 20,948 contracts against 2 of open interest. Spot at $112.38 (+0.75%), so the strike is 5.9% OTM. This is a concentrated directional bet, not a cluster.

Bullish Bets to Watch

AAPL (score 52) — $9.7M in calls, led by the 315 strike (8/14) at $4.2M. Spot at $311.97 (+0.38%). Call notional has declined from a $53.8M peak on 7/31 to $9.7M today — conviction is fading. Yesterday's bullish bet was flat.

AMZN (score 50) — $6.0M in calls with TRO confirmation. The 275 strike (8/14) leads at $3.5M. Spot at $272.62 (-1.72%). Call notional has dropped from $40.9M on 7/30 to $6.0M. Yesterday's bearish bet on AMZN was right, and the declining call flow suggests bulls are stepping back.

AVGO (score 47) — $3.2M in calls with TRO confirmation, appearing on both the bearish and bullish conviction lists. The tape is conflicted: puts are larger ($7.4M vs $3.2M) and have higher V/OI (479x vs 37x), but both sides have conviction.

KHC (score 47) — $1.4M in calls at 155x V/OI, concentrated at the 26 strike (8/14) with prints at 82x and 155x V/OI. Spot at $25.73 (-3.36% today). PCR of 0.08 is the most extreme bullish flow ratio on the board.

The Oracle Read

The index put escalation is the dominant signal. SPY, QQQ, and IWM have all seen put notional climb for over a week with no sign of reversal — the 8,500x V/OI SPY 802 print looks like institutional hedging, not retail speculation. Single-name bears were right yesterday and bulls were wrong, and today's flow doubled down on the bearish side. The tape says this rally is losing buyers and attracting hedgers.

Total unusual put notional: $195.3M across 11 sectors. Sectors with 🔴 Defensive signal have BOTH high PCR (>1.2) AND >$2M of unusual put buying — institutions are actively hedging there. 🟢 Risk-On means call-heavy with no defensive flow — the safest put-selling ground.

How to read the Sector Tape

The sector tape aggregates the daily option chain by GICS sector. For each sector it computes the put/call ratio (PCR) and the total notional of unusual put prints (contracts where today's volume exceeds existing open interest by 50%+). The signal tells you where institutions are positioning defensively vs. where they're comfortable being long.

  • PCR (put/call ratio) — put volume ÷ call volume (or OI). Above 1.0 = puts trade more than calls (defensive). Below 0.8 = call-heavy (risk-on). The OI version is more stable; the volume version is more reactive to today's flow.
  • UnusualPut$ — total notional ($ = volume × mid × 100) of put contracts where volume > 1.5× open interest AND notional > $50K. This is the UnusualWhales signal: new positions opening rather than existing ones trading hands. Large values = someone is paying up for protection.
  • Signal — derived from PCR + unusual notional. 🔴 Defensive (PCR > 1.2 AND > $2M unusual) = heavy hedging — be cautious selling puts there. 🟡 Caution = some defensive flow. 🟢 Risk-On (PCR < 0.9, < $500K unusual) = calmest put-selling ground. ⚪ Neutral = mixed.

How to use it with ChainScan

The sector tape is the weather report above the single-name scanner. A bull-put-spread TAKE verdict on a name in a 🟢 Risk-On sector is high confidence — the tape confirms nobody's hedging there. A TAKE verdict on a name in a 🔴 Defensive sector should be downgraded: institutions are actively buying puts at the strikes you'd be selling, so either skip the trade, go further OTM (0.15 delta instead of 0.20), or shorten DTE to get ahead of the hedging flow. The ETF block (SPY/QQQ/IWM) gives the macro read — if QQQ is 🔴 Defensive, every tech name on the ChainScan table carries extra risk.

The top-prints table

Shows the 15 largest unusual put prints across all sectors, sorted by notional. This is where you see the actual whale activity: which symbol, which strike, which expiration, and how much money is behind it. A single $50M put print could be one institution hedging a long book (not necessarily bearish) or a fresh directional bet. When you see clusters across multiple strikes and names in the same sector, the institutional interpretation gets stronger.

🎯 Smart Money — directional-bet detection (both sides)

Two tables surface institutional directional bets. 🐻 Bearish bets (unusual put activity): names where put buying looks like a coordinated bear bet. 🐂 Bullish bets (unusual call activity): names where call buying looks like a coordinated bull bet. The conviction score separates directional bets from dispersed hedging using three features: (1) V/OI breadth — fraction of notional in contracts with V/OI > 20×, discounted by sample size; (2) strike concentration — fraction of notional in the dominant strike cluster (within 2% of spot); (3) notional scale — saturates at $5M. Score ≥70 = strong directional bet, ≥50 = moderate, ≥30 = some clustering.

The TRO columns (D/W/M) show the trend on daily/weekly/monthly timeframes. ✅ TRO Confirmed: for bearish bets, daily AND weekly both ▼ (downtrend); for bullish bets, daily AND weekly both ▲ (uptrend). The highest-conviction signals are bets in the direction TRO already confirms. A high score with TRO NOT confirmed means the option market may be ahead of the trend indicator — an early warning.

Example (bearish): LLY on 2026-07-29 had $27.7M unusual puts, V/OI up to 284×, concentrated in 5 strikes within $20 of spot, placed at the top of a 5-day rally. TRO daily red since July 15. LLY fell 4% the next day. Example (bullish): AMD on 2026-07-29 had $28M unusual calls at the bottom of a 22% crash week ($543→$425). The calls were concentrated in Aug 7 expiry (through earnings Aug 4). AMD bounced +15% the next day on a Microsoft-led chip rebound and a $14B Core Scientific deal. Both sides of the tape are predictive.

Caveat: open interest lags one day (reported from the previous close). Volume can be driven by a single large order as easily as by distributed flow. Hedging is not the same as bearish — a put buyer may be insuring a long position, not speculating. Use the tape as a confirming colour on top of technical analysis, not as a standalone forecast.
